What Angel homes are like
Angel is the crossroads where Islington High Street, Pentonville Road, City Road and St John Street meet, named after a long-gone coaching inn on the Great North Road whose name survives on the tube map and the Monopoly board. The station, on the Bank branch of the Northern line, has the longest escalator on the London Underground, 60 metres from top to bottom. Duncan Terrace and Colebrooke Row, put up between about 1717 and 1842, face each other across a ribbon of public garden that covers the course of the New River, the channel that carried Hertfordshire spring water into London from 1613 until this stretch was buried in 1861. Tall terraces like these are mostly flats now, three or four to a building, sharing a hall and a staircase that takes every pair of feet in the house.
Behind the High Street, Camden Passage is a car-free lane of Georgian and Victorian shopfronts with flats above, and its antiques market has traded on Wednesdays and Saturdays since the 1960s. East of the junction, early Victorian terraces on Noel Road and Gerrard Road run down towards the Regent’s Canal, which slips under the neighbourhood through the 960 yard Islington Tunnel; the eastern portal sits at the foot of Colebrooke Row. South along City Road and St John Street the postcode turns EC1, where mansion blocks and estate flats mix with the towers rising around City Road Basin, and our rounds carry straight on into Clerkenwell and Finsbury.

Where does your van park while you clean?
Every street on the Islington side sits in a controlled parking zone and almost none of these terraces has a drive, so we plan parking before we set off: a pay-by-phone bay, a visitor voucher if your building holds them, or a bay a few doors down, since our hoses reach upper-floor flats without trouble.
Do you clean leather sofas as well as fabric ones?
Yes, and Angel keeps us busy with them, since homes furnished from the antiques trade tend to hold older hide pieces. Leather is cleaned and then conditioned, which revives dulled, dried-out arms and seats, and surface marks such as biro often lift entirely. Mention leather when you book so we bring the right kit.
How long will a carpet take to dry in a basement or canal-side flat?
Most synthetic carpets are touch-dry in 1 to 2 hours. Lower-ground rooms near the canal hold moisture longer, so allow the top of that range, and a little beyond in winter. We extract hard as we clean and get air moving before we leave; in winter, warm the room and crack a window.
