Ardleigh Green was Hardley Green on maps until the 1880s, a heath clearing in Hornchurch parish where the little River Ravensbourne begins. Now it is a run of detached and semi-detached family houses either side of Ardleigh Green Road, with New City College’s campus at number 64. London Carpet Cleaning covers Ardleigh Green, RM11, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Hardley Green, the Ravensbourne and the college
The name is old. It meant a clearing in the heath, and the place was written as Hardley Green until at least the early 1600s; the 1883 Ordnance Survey map was the last to use that spelling. It was a hamlet of Hornchurch parish, and the ground here drains to form the head of the Ravensbourne, a small stream that runs south through Emerson Park and Harrow Lodge Park to join the River Rom.
The railway brought the suburb. Squirrels Heath station (Gidea Park since 1969) opened in 1910 in Romford parish, and the county history notes it was convenient for people living in Ardleigh Green; the Liberty line stop at Emerson Park is the other option today. Ardleigh Green Road is the spine. New City College’s Ardleigh Green campus is at number 64, the old Havering College site, and at the top of the road the A127 Southend Arterial Road cuts across on its way to the M25.
The homes are family houses with wide rooms and proper hallways: detached and semi-detached, a run of bungalows, and a smaller number of flats, many of them along Ardleigh Green Road itself. Most have a private drive, so our van gets in off the road. The carpets in the older houses are often wool or a wool mix, and wool rewards a careful clean with less water.
Parking, the main road and the A127
On the side roads parking is easy. Nearly every house has its own drive, and we run the hose from wherever we pull up. Ardleigh Green Road is different near the shops: the council’s pay-and-display bays there run from 8.30am to 6.30pm with a three-hour limit, and the first half hour is free once a day. If you live on that stretch, we park on the nearest side road (Haynes Road, which joins Ardleigh Green Road, is one option) and walk the hose round.
The A127 at the top of the area is part of TfL’s road network, and we do not stop on it to unload. If your house faces the arterial road, tell us when you book and we will come in from behind. Near number 64 the road is busiest when the college day starts and ends, so a mid-morning slot is the calmest there. Before we arrive, clear the stairs and the floor under the beds, and we will move the sofas and chairs.
What does the census show for this end of Ardleigh Green?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Semi-detached houses | 19.3% |
| Terraced houses | 2.4% |
| Purpose-built flats | 10.3% |
| Homes with three bedrooms | 23.0% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 37.6% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 22.6% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 5.3% |
Ardleigh Green is split between two census areas. The point this page is built on sits in the one the ONS calls Emerson Park (Havering 015), which covers the south end of Ardleigh Green Road and the roads below it; the northern part, by the college and the A127, is counted next door. So read the table as the Emerson Park side of Ardleigh Green.
The build dates explain the floors. In the VOA count, 37.6% of homes went up between 1945 and 1972 and another 22.6% between 1973 and 1999, so three homes in five are post-war. In houses of that age we find more synthetic and wool-mix carpet than pure wool. Terraces are almost absent at 2.4%; the semis make up 19.3% and the rest of the houses are detached, so most jobs include a full flight of stairs and a landing.
Flats are 10.3% of homes, many of them in the blocks fronting Ardleigh Green Road, and for a two-bed flat there, with both bedrooms and the living room cleaned, the bill comes to £115. Social renting is low (5.3%), as is everything except ownership. Just 0.9% of homes lack central heating, so a winter clean still dries in a normal working day.

Family carpets that have done the miles
The commonest job here is a family carpet that has taken years of steady traffic, on the stairs and landing or in a lounge that has hosted every Christmas. Expect the odd mince pie trodden in long before anyone owned up. Fabric and leather suites are the other regular, the arms gone shiny where the household always sits and older hide that has dried out and wants feeding. Dogs back from a muddy walk and a lap of the lounge are a local pattern, and paw prints on a cut-pile carpet lift far better than owners expect.
Beige and other pale stair carpets are everywhere in these houses, and children running up and down them are the usual cause of a grubby middle of the tread. They come up very well. The limit is a single greasy or oily mark that has been walked into a pale carpet for a long time, the sort near the top step in a busy house. It will lighten a great deal but may not vanish completely, and if it looks set in we tell you before we start.

Ardleigh Green bookings: common questions
Do you cover Ardleigh Green from the A127 down to Emerson Park?
All of the RM11 side of Ardleigh Green and out to its edges: Ardleigh Green Road, Nelmes Way, Haynes Road, Squirrels Heath Road and Squirrels Heath Lane, and the roads towards Emerson Park and Gidea Park. If you are close by in RM2 or RM12 we almost certainly reach you too, so it is worth asking.
Where will the van park on an Ardleigh Green street?
Most of the houses here have their own drive, and the residential turnings are largely uncontrolled, so parking is rarely the headache it is in inner London. We run the hose from wherever we pull up. On the busier stretch of Ardleigh Green Road, with its pay-and-display bays, a spot on a side road works fine.
Can you clean our lounge curtains without taking them down?
Yes. Long lined lounge curtains, the sort that gather dust and fade in the folds, we can clean in place on the rail. There is no shrinkage and no rehanging, and they come up fresh. It suits the tall front-room windows in many of the houses here.
How long until wool carpet in an Ardleigh Green home is dry?
Typically 6 to 7 hours for carpets, a little more for a thick wool pile or a heavily soiled lounge in one of the wide rooms. We plan the visit around that, so a downstairs done in the morning is usable by the evening, which is how most jobs before a family gathering work out.
Do you clean the flats along Ardleigh Green Road?
Yes. About one home in ten in this census area is a purpose-built flat, and many of them front Ardleigh Green Road. A flat is usually a quick job on one level: two bedrooms and the living room come to £115. If the block has a shared stair carpet and the managing agent wants it done, we price it as stairs and invoice them directly.
Our house was built in the 1960s. Is the carpet likely to be wool?
It could be either. Most homes here are post-war and many have been re-carpeted since, often in a polypropylene or nylon, sometimes in an 80/20 wool mix. We check the fibre before we start, from a label or a tuft taken from inside a cupboard, and set the water temperature and the cleaning product to suit. You do not need to know in advance.
Every clean carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right, we come back. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned homes across Ardleigh Green and Havering since 2009.
