Seven streets run into the Bank junction, from Cornhill and Threadneedle Street round to Poultry, and the Bank of England looks across the crossing at the Royal Exchange and Mansion House. Up on the top floors, above the banking halls, sits a thin band of City flats with pale wool-mix carpet. London Carpet Cleaning covers Bank, EC2 and EC3, homes and offices alike. A room starts at £36, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Portland stone below, flats at the top
Bank is the junction itself and the streets that radiate from it: Cornhill, Threadneedle Street, Lombard Street, King William Street, Poultry, Princes Street and Queen Victoria Street. The City’s own conservation appraisal calls it the commercial centre of the Square Mile. Almost every principal building on the crossing is faced in Portland stone, and the blocks around the junction rise to about six storeys, most with a set-back attic or mansard roof on top. Most of the medieval plots under these banks began as houses. In the second half of the 19th century they were bought up, merged and rebuilt as banks and offices, while the people who had lived on them moved out to new streets in places like Bloomsbury.
So what we clean here comes in two kinds. The offices around Cornhill and Threadneedle Street run hard-wearing loop pile and fabric-panel seating built for footfall. The homes are the minority: City apartments and converted upper storeys, often off Lombard Street or Old Broad Street, fitted with paler wool-mix or greige carpet chosen for a modern refit. Bank station sits under the lot, with four lines meeting below the junction: the Central, the Northern, the Waterloo and City and the DLR. Its new Cannon Street entrance, opened in February 2023, added step-free access to the Northern line and the DLR. Handy on foot; a van has a harder time.
Bank homes in the census figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Purpose-built flats | 87.0% |
| One-bedroom homes | 53.4% |
| Two-bedroom homes | 32.1% |
| Rented privately | 48.3% |
| Owned outright | 22.7% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 40.1% |
The census does not split the City into neighbourhoods. The whole Square Mile is one area, City of London 001, so these figures cover every home from the Barbican down to the river, and Bank is one corner of it. Purpose-built flats make up 87.0% of homes, and more than half (53.4%) have a single bedroom, with another 32.1% on two. A typical job is small: one bedroom, the living room and perhaps a hall runner. A one-bed flat off Lombard Street, bedroom plus living room, costs £79 at our fixed rates.
Nearly half the homes (48.3%) are rented privately, many by people who work a few streets away and move on after a contract or two, so check-out cleans with a dated receipt make up a steady share of our Bank work. At the other end, 22.7% of homes are owned outright, and those owners tend to keep good wool carpet and want it treated gently. The biggest building period in the VOA count is 1945 to 1972 (40.1%), which mostly reflects the big post-war estates elsewhere in the City; round the junction itself the flats tend to sit in older stone buildings or recent refits.

Access around the junction
Bank is one of the hardest places in London to bring a van, so we plan the route before the day. On weekdays from 7am to 7pm, general traffic and private hire vehicles cannot cross the junction. Buses and bicycles still can. Since 28 July 2025 black cabs have also been allowed through, on a trial. Threadneedle Street between the junction and Bartholomew Lane is closed to all motor vehicles, and so is Queen Victoria Street where it meets Mansion House Street. That leaves the side streets, approached from the outside in.
The whole City is a controlled parking zone, enforced Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm and Saturday 7am to 11am. Pay bays are paid through RingGo with a four-hour limit, and they are free after 11am on a Saturday and all day Sunday. On a plain yellow line with no kerb marks we can load or unload for up to 40 minutes, which is enough to carry the machine in and the hoses up. For flats, a Saturday afternoon or Sunday slot is the easiest booking of the week. For offices we come before staff arrive and work to your building’s goods lift and sign-in rules. With six storeys plus an attic, a top-floor flat without a lift means a long carry, so tell us about the stairs when you book.
Spills, ink and what will lift
Coffee trodden into office carpet after a leaving do, biro and lunch on the fabric breakout sofas, a cocktail gone sticky on black leather at home: the marks around Bank follow the working week. Kitchenette corners near the office tea points take a beating too. We clean offices early, so a Cornhill floor is back in use by nine.
Some marks have limits. Nail varnish spilled by a dressing table, or old solvent-based ink, changes the colour of the fibre, and a clean will lighten it without always removing it. Food, drink and traffic soiling come out to a very high standard. We look at the mark first and tell you on the doorstep which kind it is, before any money changes hands.

Cleaning carpets, sofas and rugs near the Bank of England
Most Bank jobs are hot-water extraction. Our steam carpet cleaning lifts trodden-in coffee and food from office loop pile and flat carpet alike, and with the water pulled back out the floor is walkable by morning. For the fabric breakout sofas and the leather in City apartments, our upholstery cleaning covers both: fabric is rinsed of its coffee, and leather is cleaned and conditioned so it stops feeling tacky. Loose rugs are cleaned on site through rug cleaning, and we move light furniture for you. If your office or flat sits beyond the junction, we clean the rest of the City of London too, with neighbouring Monument and Aldgate on the same fixed prices.
Questions from Bank flats and offices
Which streets around the Bank junction do you cover, from Cornhill to Poultry?
All of them. We work Cornhill, Threadneedle Street, Lombard Street, King William Street, Old Broad Street, Poultry and the lanes off them, across EC2, EC3 and EC4. An office or a flat within a few minutes’ walk of the Bank of England is inside our patch, and the price is the same on every street.
How do you get a van into Bank with the junction closed to traffic?
We never try to cross it. On weekdays between 7am and 7pm the junction is shut to vans and cars (black cabs are allowed through on a trial), and road closures around the City are common. We plan the route, load in from a side street, work early before your staff arrive or after they leave, and build a little extra travel into the slot. Allow for that if you are booking a tight window.
Can you clean our office out of hours so nobody is disturbed?
Yes, and most of our City work runs that way. Evenings once everyone has gone suit us and suit you. Carpets take up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, so an evening clean is dry overnight and ready before the first meeting, which is why serviced offices near Bank tend to book us like this.
How long will a City flat carpet take to dry?
Carpets take up to 6 to 7 hours to dry after low-moisture hot-water extraction. Upper-floor City apartments are usually warm with good airflow, which helps the carpet along. In a lower, enclosed conversion, open a window or two and a morning clean will be dry by evening.
Is a weekend booking easier for a flat near Bank?
Usually, yes. City pay bays stop charging at 11am on a Saturday and are free all day Sunday, and the junction carries less traffic, so we can park close and carry in quickly. A Saturday afternoon or Sunday slot also suits residents who are at a desk all week. The price is the same on any day.
I rent near Bank and my tenancy is ending. Will the clean satisfy the inventory?
That is a common Bank booking, with almost half of City homes rented privately. We clean every carpeted room, treat the marks an inventory clerk looks for, such as traffic lanes and drink spills, and give you a dated receipt listing the rooms done. If your agent wants a particular wording on the receipt, tell us when you book.
Every clean carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up as it should, we come back and put it right at no extra cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, we have cleaned across London since 2009, and we tell you what will lift and what might not before we start.
