Denys Lasdun’s Keeling House rises 16 storeys over Claredale Street, four wings of maisonettes round a central tower, and below it narrow period cottages on Pollard Row and walk-up flats share the same few streets of Bethnal Green, E2. Many homes are upper-floor flats reached by a single communal stair. London Carpet Cleaning has worked these streets since 2009, with rooms from £36 and a drying time of 6 to 7 hours.

Cottages, walk-ups and a Lasdun tower
Bethnal Green packs more housing types into a few streets than almost anywhere in east London. There are Victorian and Georgian terraces, and side streets like Pollard Row and Old Bethnal Green Road still hold narrow period cottages, many split into flats. To the west are the red-brick tenements of the Boundary Estate round Arnold Circus, and to the east, off Roman Road, the post-war council towers of the Cranbrook. The area was heavily bombed in the war, so a high share of homes are ex-local-authority, which means a lot of upper-floor flats reached by a single communal stair.
Keeling House is the one people photograph. Lasdun finished it in 1957 as council housing, a cluster of four blocks of maisonettes around a service tower, each home laid out more like an East End house than a flat, with its rooms on two floors. Tower Hamlets sold it to a private developer in 1999, and a renovation in 2001 added a penthouse storey and a concierge. Lasdun’s two smaller cluster blocks on Usk Street came first and share the design.
The tube station carries a heavier history. On 3 March 1943, before the station had opened to trains, 173 people, 62 of them children, were killed in a crush on the stairs of the air-raid shelter there. The Central line platforms finally opened on 4 December 1946.
Bethnal Green by the census
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Rented privately | 37.4% |
| Flats over shops or in converted buildings | 9.8% |
| Built before 1900 | 16.3% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 17.9% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 24.9% |
| Three bedrooms | 22.1% |
The census area around the tube station and Keeling House is Bethnal Green North West. The build dates come in even layers: 16.3% before 1900, 17.9% between the wars, 24.9% from 1945 to 1972, and the rest later. That spread is why one job is a Victorian cottage with wool on the stairs and the next is a 1930s walk-up with a synthetic carpet laid on concrete. Another 9.8% of homes are flats over shops or inside converted buildings, such as the flats up narrow stairs above Bethnal Green Road.
Renting dominates. 37.4% of homes are rented privately, more than any other tenure, so end-of-tenancy cleans come up week in, week out. Bigger homes exist too: 22.1% have three bedrooms, and for a three-bed home on two floors, the bedrooms, the living room and the stairs come to £192. Only 2.1% of homes lack central heating, so with the radiators on a carpet is dry by the evening.

Which Bethnal Green station do we head for?
Tell us the street, never just the station. Two stations carry the Bethnal Green name and they sit a good walk apart: the Central line tube, in zone 2, by the junction of Cambridge Heath Road and Roman Road, and the Overground station on the Weaver line further south-west. Bethnal Green is in the council’s A zones, where most streets are controlled 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays, some on Saturdays or Sunday mornings as well, so read the sign at the end of your road.
Bethnal Green Road market trades Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, and the one-hour free bays near it are for shoppers. If your flat is over a shop on the market stretch, we park on a side street and carry the kit up. In the walk-up blocks, give us the floor and clear the landing outside your door.
Front rooms, settees and turmeric
The job we are called to most often in E2 is a front-room carpet that has taken years of foot traffic at the door, plus the everyday marks of a busy family home: spills, pet prints, the odd patch where the kids got at something. Households here often want the front room right before a gathering or a family meal, and a single afternoon clean handles that well. Leather and fabric sofas come up a lot too, since flats this size tend to live around the settee.
A long-set dye stain, the kind turmeric or a strong curry leaves in a pale wool rug, will lift a great deal but can leave a faint shadow you catch in certain light. We tell you that before we start, so you know what to expect from the rug.

Settees, leather suites and loose rugs
Most carpets here get our hot-water steam carpet cleaning, which lifts ground-in traffic and leaves the pile dry within 6 to 7 hours. For settees and dining chairs, leather suites included, we bring the right method to the fabric with our upholstery cleaning, conditioning leather that has dried out as well as cleaning it. Loose rugs are cleaned in the home on our rug cleaning service, and a large or delicate piece gets a photo check first so we can say whether it is safe to do on site. We cover the rest of Tower Hamlets, and neighbours in Cambridge Heath and Globe Town too.
Bethnal Green, your questions
Which parts of E2 do you cover?
All of Bethnal Green and the wider E2 area, from Bethnal Green Road and Columbia Road across to Roman Road, Globe Town and Cambridge Heath. We work the period terraces and the estates equally, so whether you are on a Boundary Estate tenement stair or in a converted cottage off Pollard Row, the price and service are the same.
Is parking a problem on the estates and side streets?
Rarely a real one. Most streets are in the council’s A zones, controlled on weekday daytimes, so a permit or visitor space helps. On the estates we park in the bays and carry our gear in, so there is no need to keep the van right outside the door.
Can you get muddy dog and footprints out of stair carpets?
Yes, and it is one of our regular E2 jobs, given how many flats here run up a single communal or internal flight. We lay protective sheets so nothing is tracked through the rest of the home, then work the treads and landing thoroughly. Dried mud and pet prints usually come back close to new on a sound carpet.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Bethnal Green upper-floor flat?
Carpets take about 6 to 7 hours to dry, so a morning clean is ready for walking on by the evening. In an upper-floor ex-council flat off a communal stair, where airflow can be poor, open a window. A thick wool pile may want a little longer still. We leave carpets damp, never soaked, so the wait is only for the last of the moisture to go.
I own a maisonette in Keeling House. How is it priced?
Like a small house. Each carpeted bedroom is from £36, the living room from £43, and the internal stair between the two floors is a flight from £41. Tell the concierge we are coming and give us the floor; we bring the kit up in the lift.
My flat is above a shop on Bethnal Green Road. Can you come before the market gets going?
Yes, ask for the first slot of the day. The market trades from 8am, Monday to Saturday, and after that the kerb outside is busy, so an early start lets us unload close and carry the kit up before trading gets going. If your stair is shared with the shop, tell us and we will keep the hose tidy along it.
If any result is not right, our re-clean guarantee brings us back to fix it. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Bethnal Green and Tower Hamlets since 2009.
