What Bishop’s homes are like
Bishop’s is the SE1 pocket that runs from Waterloo across to Lambeth North, and the housing splits cleanly in two. At its heart sits the Roupell Street Conservation Area, a knot of 1820s workers’ cottages laid out by the gold refiner John Palmer Roupell. Roupell Street, Whittlesey Street, Theed Street and Windmill Walk are still two-storey stock-brick terraces with narrow staircases and small first-floor bedrooms, and they survived both the Blitz and the developers almost intact.
Around that core the stock changes to mansion-block flats, converted maisonettes and council-built blocks along Hercules Road, Cosser Street and Carlisle Lane, much of it on upper floors. Lambeth North sits on the Bakerloo line at the corner of Westminster Bridge Road and Baylis Road, Waterloo terminus is a few minutes north, and Lower Marsh, the old market street, runs through the middle with its independent cafes and shops. A cleaner heading to Carlisle Lane passes the William Blake mosaics set into the railway arches, near where Blake lived on Hercules Road in the 1790s.

The job pattern follows the two halves. In the cottages it is wool and natural-fibre carpet on tight stairs and landings, plus the odd coffee or wine ring next to the sofa where a small lounge keeps the furniture close to the traffic path. In the flats it is lounge and bedroom carpet before a tenancy check, sofas that smell tired in a closed-up room, and the occasional mattress marked by a leak from a window or radiator. Roupell Street and its neighbours have no driveways and tight kerbs, and most of the ward sits in a controlled zone where single yellow lines are restricted from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. We are used to it. The machine stays in the van and we run the hose in, so a short legal stop nearby is all we need. Tell us the access when you book and we will plan the slot.
Can you clean carpets between tenancies near Waterloo?

How long will the carpet take to dry?
Most carpets are touch-dry in 1 to 2 hours, because hot-water extraction pulls the bulk of the moisture back out rather than leaving the pile soaked. Upper-floor flats with little airflow take a touch longer, so we open a window and leave you airing it. Wool in the older cottages holds a little more water, and you can walk on it in socks well before it is fully dry.
