Bedford Square, built between 1775 and 1783, is ringed by brick terraces now split into first-floor lateral flats, top-floor studios and basement flats below the pavement. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Bloomsbury, WC1, since 2009, out to the 560 flats of the Brunswick Centre. Cleaning costs from £36 per room and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Garden squares, mansion blocks and the Brunswick
Bloomsbury was laid out by the Bedford Estate as a grid of garden squares, and the housing still follows that plan. Camden made it a conservation area in 1968, a year after the law that created them. Bedford Square is the best-preserved Georgian square in London, and the flat-fronted brick terraces around it and along streets like Bedford Place have nearly all been divided into flats, from tall-ceilinged laterals on the first floor down to basement flats below the pavement.
The 1890s added red-brick mansion blocks. Bedford Court Mansions went up on Bedford Avenue in that decade, originally to house nursing staff from the nearby hospitals, and today holds about 120 apartments across seven floors. Its long communal corridors and carpeted stairs, like those of the blocks off Coram Street, do some of the hardest-working floors in WC1.
The other Bloomsbury is concrete. The Brunswick Centre on Marchmont Street went up between 1967 and 1972 to Patrick Hodgkinson’s design and has been Grade II listed since 2000. It holds 560 flats in stepped terraces above a shopping precinct and a cinema, split between Foundling Court and O’Donnell Court. Around the corner, Coram’s Fields keeps the old Foundling Hospital site as a park that adults may only enter with a child. Russell Square station on Bernard Street serves the Piccadilly line from platforms about 32 metres down, reached by lift. With the universities a few streets away, plenty of the flats above and behind the shopfronts are furnished lets.
Coffee, curry and the grey line up the stairs
The job sheet here reads like a diary of flat life. A coffee drop on a mansion-flat hallway carpet during the morning rush. A curry mark on the seat cushion of a two-seater after a Friday night in. A puppy accident on the good living-room rug, a child ill on a mattress overnight, and communal stairs wearing one grey line up the middle because every resident treads the same path. Much of the period stock still has wool carpet, so we run cooler water and pH-neutral chemistry to keep the fibre from felting.
Old stains need a plain warning. A tea or coffee mark that has sat in aged wool for months, usually after a few rounds of supermarket spray, will lighten a long way but does not always vanish. We assess it dry and give you the odds before we begin.
Bloomsbury homes, by the numbers
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats of any kind | 96.9% |
| Purpose-built flats | 77.2% |
| Flats over shops or in other conversions | 10.5% |
| Rented privately | 40.7% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 34.3% |
| One bedroom | 48.5% |
| Built before 1919 | 45.2% |
The census counts southern Bloomsbury together with Holborn and St Giles, so the figures take in those streets too. Houses barely register (3.0%). Almost every stair we clean in WC1 is a communal one, and the private stair runner that fills a suburban job sheet hardly exists here. Nearly half the homes have one bedroom (48.5%), so a typical booking is small: a one-bed flat with a living room comes to £79.
Tenure drives the calendar. With 40.7% of homes rented privately, end-of-tenancy cleans peak when the university year turns over, and the inventory clerk wants a receipt. The 45.2% built before 1919 are the Georgian conversions and the mansion blocks, where wool is common and the drying needs watching. Another 15.9% date from 2000 or later, usually blocks with lifts and a concierge. Just 3.7% of homes have no central heating; in those we extract harder and ask for windows open to keep the drying inside the usual time.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Camden 028) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Porters, permit bays and basement steps
Bloomsbury sits in Camden’s CA-E controlled parking zone. When Camden consulted residents in September and October 2025, controls ran from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, with nothing on Sundays, and the council’s study recommended longer hours, up to 7am to 9pm on weekdays. Hours can change after a review like that, so we read the plates on your street on the day and pay for a bay by phone. Finding a legal spot near the squares can take a few minutes, and that time is already in the quote.
Inside, the porter is often the key. At Bedford Court Mansions the porter’s desk runs 8am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 8pm on Saturdays, with no service on Sundays, so a weekday booking makes access easy. Tell the porter or managing agent the day and we bring the kit in through the entrance they choose. In a Georgian basement flat the machine goes down the area steps from the pavement, so clear a path through the front area. Move small things off the floor and lift anything stored under the bed, and we start on time.
Carpet, upholstery and rug cleaning in Bloomsbury
Most Bloomsbury carpets get professional steam cleaning, hot water extraction that flushes out the street grit a vacuum never reaches. Our sofa and upholstery cleaning handles everything from student-let flatpack fabric to inherited velvet armchairs, and rug cleaning happens in the flat itself, which suits a wool rug on bare boards: you clear the floor and we move the light furniture. The same team works Russell Square and Holborn next door and covers the rest of Camden.
Bloomsbury questions, answered
Which parts of Bloomsbury do you cover, from Bedford Square to the Brunswick Centre?
All of them. WC1B around the British Museum and Bedford Square, WC1N from Lamb's Conduit Street to the Brunswick Centre, WC1H up through Tavistock Square to Cartwright Gardens, and the WC1A corner by New Oxford Street. If the address says WC1, it is on our rounds.
How do you handle parking in the controlled zone?
Bloomsbury is in Camden’s CA-E zone, so kerb space is permit bays and pay-by-phone, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday at the last review. We allow for the search in the schedule and the fixed quote, and a block name or porter’s bay mentioned at booking speeds the start.
Do you do end-of-tenancy carpet cleans for university lets?
Every summer, in volume. With UCL, Birkbeck and SOAS on the doorstep, Bloomsbury tenancies change hands fast, and agents expect carpets professionally cleaned at checkout. We work to the inventory clerk’s standard, leave a receipt for the deposit file, and can attend after the removal van has gone so nothing gets tracked back in.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Bloomsbury basement flat?
dry within 6 to 7 hours for most synthetics, a little longer for dense wool. The slow cases are the basement flats below pavement level in the Georgian terraces, where air hardly moves, so there we extract harder on the final pass and open the sashes for cross-ventilation. You can walk on it in clean-soled shoes straight away.
Can you clean the corridor and stair carpets in a mansion block?
Yes. In this census area 77.2% of homes are purpose-built flats, and the shared corridors and stairs in the older blocks carry every resident’s traffic. We clean stairs from £41 a flight and price a corridor from its length before the day. For a residents’ association or managing agent, we book around the porter’s hours and leave a receipt addressed to whoever is paying.
My flat is in a listed building. Does that change the clean?
Listing protects the building, not the carpet, so no consent is needed for a clean, whether you are in the Brunswick Centre (Grade II since 2000) or a Georgian terrace. What changes is the care. In the older houses we keep moisture low near original boards and skirtings, and we lift and pad furniture legs so nothing marks a period floor.
Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if something is not right, we return and put it right at no charge. Our technicians are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have looked after Bloomsbury’s carpets, from basement flats to mansion blocks, since 2009.
