St Mary’s, Bow Church, stands on its own island in the middle of Bow Road, where the Bishop of London allowed a chapel in 1311, and the late-Georgian terraces of Fairfield Road run north from it. London Carpet Cleaning cleans across Bow Church, E3, and over the Lea to East Village in E20. Prices start at £36 a room, and most carpets are walkable and dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A church on an island in Bow Road
Bow grew up around a river crossing. By the 14th century enough people lived along Bow Road to need a church nearer than St Dunstan’s in Stepney, whose roads flooded in winter, and Bishop Baldock granted a chapel-of-ease here in 1311. It became a parish church in 1719, was repaired under C. R. Ashbee from 1900 and was badly bomb-damaged in 1941. The statue of Gladstone in front of it went up in 1882, paid for by William Bryant of the match factory up the road. The DLR station named after the church opened in 1987 on the Stratford branch, in zone 2, about 300 metres from Bow Road station on the District and Hammersmith & City lines.
North of the church is the Fairfield Road Conservation Area, designated in September 1989 and bounded by Fairfield Road, Tredegar Road, Wick Lane and Bow Road. Most of the terraces along Fairfield Road are early 19th century, late Georgian, in yellow stock brick, and numbers 2 to 22 are Grade II listed. Kitcat Terrace, built around 1850, keeps its cobbled street, and Ridgdale Street and Jebb Street are generous red brick terraces of the 1890s to 1920. Many of the old houses are now split into upper and lower flats.
The biggest building is the old Bryant and May match factory, where the matchgirls’ strike began in 1888. The works closed in 1979 and, from 1988, became Bow Quarter: 733 one and two-bedroom flats and penthouses inside a Grade II listed shell. Across the Lea, around Celebration Avenue and Victory Park, is East Village in E20, the former 2012 Athletes’ Village. It has its own postcode and its own council, Newham, and its carpets are nothing like Bow’s.
How do Bow’s homes break down?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Purpose-built flats | 73.6% |
| Flats in converted buildings such as old factories, or over shops | 10.3% |
| Built in 2000 or later | 54.6% |
| Built before 1919 | 17.2% |
| Rented privately | 38.1% |
| Two-bedroom homes | 43.8% |
The census area that holds the church and Fairfield Road is called Bow South, in Tower Hamlets. Its numbers show how much Bow has changed. More than half the homes (54.6%) were built in 2000 or later, and 73.6% are purpose-built flats. Another 10.3% are flats in converted buildings or over shops, and much of that is Bow Quarter. The old terraces are now a minority: 17.2% of homes date from before 1919.
For a carpet clean, that means flats, mostly. Two-bedroom homes are the biggest group at 43.8%, and 38.1% of households rent privately, so end-of-tenancy and move-in cleans are steady. A two-bed flat in Bow Quarter, both bedrooms and the living room, is £115. Heating matters too: 34.6% of homes run on electricity alone, so on a cold day we leave a window cracked and air moving to keep the drying time down.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Tower Hamlets 004) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Worn doorways and wine on pale loop
In the period flats it is door traffic and one accident. People ring about the grey patch worn into the carpet where everyone comes in off Bow Road, then mention the curry stain or the spilt coffee as an afterthought. We lift both in the same visit. The newer flats are a different job: the carpet is usually a pale grey loop only a few years old, and the call is a red wine spill at a flat-warming or a freshen-up after moving in. Those come up well.
The catch is drying. A through-lounge in a ground-floor Victorian conversion, with sash windows and no airflow, can stay damp into the next morning, well beyond the 6 to 7 hours we quote for a warm upper flat. We tell you which side of that your room is likely to fall on before we start, and we crack the windows and leave the air moving.
Zone B streets, a gated quarter and East Village
Bow is in Tower Hamlets’ parking Zone B. Most bays are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday or Monday to Saturday depending on the sub-zone (B4 runs to 7.30pm), so check the sign on your street. Council estates and private roads have their own rules. Our machine runs off the van, so the van has to stay parked for the whole clean; we use a visitor bay or a paid bay and bring the hose in from there.
Bow Quarter is a private, inward-looking development behind a gate, so tell us how entry and parking work there before the day. In East Village, across the river, the Newham parking zone is controlled every day from 8am to 9pm. For a terrace on Fairfield Road, clear the hall and the stairs; for a flat in a block, tell us your floor and whether there is a lift.

One van, three kinds of cleaning
The same van handles all of it. Our hot-water carpet cleaning does the heavy work on worn entrance carpets and wine spills, while fabric sofa and mattress cleaning covers the grey three-seaters and the mattress freshen-ups people book when they take on a flat near Bow Church. Wool rugs from the terraces, the kind that take on candle wax and dropped juice, are cleaned on your floor through our specialist rug cleaning service, with the wax and juice marks pre-treated before the shampoo. We cover East Village and the rest of Newham too, and you can read about nearby Globe Town and Bethnal Green if you are over that way.
Bow Church: questions we hear
Do you cover both the E3 terraces and East Village flats around Bow Church?
Yes, both. We are out on the E3 streets off Bow Road most weeks, from Coborn Road and Tredegar Road down to Fairfield Road, and across the Lea into E20 at East Village, Celebration Avenue and Victory Park. If you live anywhere between the two, terrace or flat, you are in our patch.
Can you park at a flat in East Village?
Yes, with a plan. East Village has its own Newham resident parking zone, controlled 8am to 9pm every day, so we agree the nearest loading point or paid bay with you when you book and run the hose or take the kit up by lift. On the Bow side, the Tower Hamlets Zone B bays need a visitor permit or a paid stay, and the van stays parked while we work.
Do you handle end-of-tenancy carpets in Bow?
Yes, and a fair share of our Bow bookings are exactly that. Letting agents around Bow Road and East Village expect the carpets done at check-out, so we time the clean for your moving day, get the worn doorway strips and any stains out, and you keep the receipt for the inventory check on the deposit.
How long will a carpet take to dry in a Bow flat?
In a warm, ventilated flat, most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours of us leaving. A heavier through-lounge, a basement room or a cool day will stretch that, sometimes to the evening. We use low-moisture extraction to keep the carpet damp, never wet, and until it is dry we ask for socks, not shoes.
We live in Bow Quarter. Is there anything to arrange first?
Just the access. Bow Quarter is a gated private development, so tell us how the gate works and where a visiting van can wait. The flats are one and two-bedroom, so a typical booking is a bedroom or two and the living room. The building outside is listed, but nothing about that changes how we clean the carpets inside.
Our Fairfield Road house is listed. Does that affect a carpet clean?
No. Listing protects the fabric of the building, and a carpet clean does not alter it. What we do take care over is the old timber: on a late-Georgian staircase or floor, we keep the water low and extract hard so nothing soaks through to the boards. A flight of stairs is £41, and a bedroom is from £36.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot lifts and then comes back, we return and sort it at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Bow and east London since 2009. Book a slot that suits your flat and we will turn up when we say we will.
