St Mary’s church has stood on its island in the middle of Bow Road since the people of Stratford-at-Bow were licensed a chapel there in 1311, with the Gladstone statue beside the churchyard. South of the road, the listed three-storey terraces of Tomlins Grove sit between the traffic and the railway viaduct. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Bow Road, E3, since 2009, with prices from £36 a room and carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A main road with a medieval church in the middle

Bow Road is part of the A11, the busy spine from Aldgate out to Stratford, and St Mary’s, Stratford Bow, is the last trace of the medieval village. The church is listed Grade II* and sits on an island at the east end of the road, with a tower from the 15th century and repairs in nearly every century since. The statue of Gladstone stands beside it; in 1988 it was daubed with red paint in memory of the match girls at the Bryant and May works, who were said to have paid for it.

The homes are mostly Victorian on the side streets and post-war or new behind them. Suburban building began around Bow Road in the 1820s. The Tomlins Grove conservation area, designated in 1969, protects flat-fronted, three-storey 19th-century terraces along Tomlins Grove, Campbell Road and Arnold Road, all listed Grade II, some with attic dormers in their slate roofs. North of the road, Coborn Road and Tredegar Road carry the same two and three-storey brick terraces, and the Georgian houses of Tredegar Square, protected since 1971, are a short walk west. A few older survivals on Bow Road itself are listed too, and original floorboards and period staircases are common under the carpet.

Bow Road station opened on 11 June 1902 and is in zone 2 on the District and Hammersmith and City lines, between Mile End and Bromley-by-Bow. Bow Church on the DLR is a short walk east, and you can change between the two on one fare.

Why do the census figures look so different from the terraces?

Homes in the Bromley-by-Bow West census area (Tower Hamlets 012)
Homes that areShare
Rented from a council or housing association46.1%
Rented from the council itself15.3%
Two bedrooms40.8%
Built before 19197.8%
Built 1945 to 197222.0%
On a district or communal heat network11.8%

Because the census area around Bow Road station, called Bromley-by-Bow West, runs south from the main road into the post-war estates towards Devons Road and Bow Common. The listed terraces are a small part of it: only 7.8% of homes date from before 1919, while 22.0% went up between 1945 and 1972 and most of the rest since. Social landlords house 46.1% of households, 15.3% with the council itself.

For the work that means a lot of flats, many of them two-bed (40.8%), reached by a lift or a communal stair, and a smaller number of tall terraced houses with three floors of stairs. A two-bed estate flat, with its living room, is £115 for the three rooms. 11.8% of homes are heated by a district or communal network, so in those blocks we check whether the heating is on before we start, because it decides how long the carpet takes to dry.

Parking off the A11

Bow Road itself is no place to unload. Cycle Superhighway 2 runs along both sides of the A11 here on tracks separated by kerbs or flexible wands, so the van goes into a side street and we carry the kit to your door. The side streets are in the council’s B zones, which run 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday on some streets and Monday to Saturday on others; the sign at the end of your road gives the hours.

In the Tomlins Grove terraces, take coats and bikes out of the hall before we arrive and tell us how many floors are carpeted. In the estate blocks, give us the floor and the entry code. If you live on Bow Road above one of the shops, we will ask which side street is closest to your door.

Family carpets, wool stairs and set marks

Most of our bookings here are family carpets that have taken years of daily life: ground-in food and tea marks in a front room before relatives visit, stairs and landings worn dull by a big household, fabric sofas with sticky arms and a child’s juice spill. Wool and wool-mix carpets are common in the older terraces, so we keep the heat moderate and the rinse thorough without soaking the pile, which protects the fibre and helps it dry fast over period floorboards. Rugs are cleaned there and then, in the room, using the same machine as the carpet.

Marks that have sat in a stair carpet for a long time, the dark line near a top step or a drink spilt months ago, sometimes lift most of the way but not fully, because the dye in the spill has stained the fibre. We tell you on the day what is likely to shift and what has set in, before we start, so there are no surprises.

One van for carpets, sofas and rugs

The same van covers all three jobs. Our hot-water carpet cleaning handles bedrooms, lounges and the well-trodden stairs that come up again and again in this part of E3. For tired fabric settees and dining chairs there is upholstery cleaning, and loose rugs go through rug cleaning in the home, shampooed and rinsed on the spot. We also clean carpets and sofas right across the rest of Tower Hamlets, as well as neighbouring Bow and Bromley-by-Bow.

Bow Road: answers to common questions

Do you cover all of the E3 postcode?

Yes. We clean the full E3 area, from Bow Road and Fairfield Road across to Tredegar Road, Coborn Road, Tomlins Grove and Antill Road, and on into Old Ford, Fish Island and Bow Common. If you are just over the postcode border, ask anyway, because we usually cover the next streets too.

Where will the van park on my street?

On a side street inside the council’s B zones, controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays and on some streets on Saturdays. We are used to it. Tell us the road when you book and we will sort a paid bay or a short load-in nearby. Parking does not change the price.

Can you get carpets ready for an end-of-tenancy check?

We do a lot of end-of-tenancy carpet cleaning around here, and letting agents in E3 can be strict about the state of floors. We clean the whole flat thoroughly so it photographs well for the inventory, which gives you the best chance of the full deposit back. Book a day or two before the final inspection.

How long do carpets take to dry in a Bow Road Victorian terrace?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, helped by good airflow and the warm-water method we use. A mattress, or a carpet in a damp ground-floor or basement bedroom off Coborn Road, can take longer because solid Victorian brick walls hold moisture. Open a window and it speeds up. We never leave anything soaked.

I live in one of the listed houses on Tomlins Grove. Is there anything you need to know?

Only the stairs and the floors. The listing protects the building, not the carpet, so a clean needs no permission. These houses have three storeys, so there are usually two flights, and a runner over old boards we clean in place with low moisture so the timber stays dry. Tell us how many flights are carpeted and we price each from £41.

My flat is on Bow Road itself, above a shop. How do you get the kit in?

From the nearest side street. The cycle tracks on Bow Road mean the van can rarely sit at the kerb outside, so we park round the corner, within the B-zone rules, and carry the machine and hoses up. Tell us the door you use, front or back, and the floor, and we plan the shortest route.

Should a treated area fail to come up as agreed, our re-clean guarantee means a return visit at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Bow and the wider East End since 2009.

What our customers say in Bow Road.

★★★★★
Cleaned the front room carpet before a family gathering and it had years of food spills and tea marks ground in. Came up so much fresher than I expected and the chap was polite and quick. Lovely to have it looking clean again for visitors.

Our fabric sofa had grubby arms and a juice stain where the little one had spilt his drink. They cleaned the whole thing and the cushions and it looks brand new. Friendly, on time and very reasonable. Would definitely have them again.

Needed the flat carpets cleaned for the end of tenancy and the agent had been fussy about the state of them. They did a thorough job and we got the full deposit back, so I'm very grateful. Punctual and got on with it without any fuss.

Did the stairs and landing carpet, which gets a lot of use with a big family. It looks loads brighter now. There was a stubborn mark near the top step that didn't fully come out, but he was honest that it had set in. Good job overall and a fair price.

Booked a mattress clean as it had got musty in our damp bedroom. They did a good job and it smells fresh again. It did take a fair while longer to dry than I was told, so we slept in the spare room that night, but I can't fault the actual clean.
