Bowes takes its name from a manor recorded in 1396, and the Enfield ward called Bowes is named after Bowes Road, which runs east from Arnos Grove station and carries the North Circular for part of its length. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned across Bowes, N11, N13 and N22, since 2009. Rooms start at £36, and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Bowes Road and the manor that named it
The old manor of Bowes, “the estate of a family called Bowes”, appears as Bowes Farm on the 1822 Ordnance Survey and as Bowes Manor in 1877. The railway reached it in 1871, but the big landowners held out for a while. By the 1880s St Michael-at-Bowes (1874) and a few large houses stood on Palmerston Road; Bowes Manor went up for sale in 1889 and 1890, and by 1897 there was building on both sides of the line. In 1900 one developer, a Mr Hill, proposed 2,000 houses and shops on 120 acres at Bowes Park, and by 1905 the Bowes Park ward held 1,578 finished houses.
That is the grid you see today: Sidney, Melbourne, Kelvin and Spencer avenues running east to west, two-storey bay-fronted terraces over suspended timber floors, with Brownlow Road and Whittington Road built the same way. East of Green Lanes the houses are a little later. The Church Commissioners let 30 acres at Bowes Park for building in 1913, by 1923 there were 72 houses east of Green Lanes and south of Tottenhall Road, and in 1933 they agreed a further 270 east of Tottenhall Road at 30 a year. The boundary between Enfield and Haringey runs through the middle of it all.
Filters, zones and the North Circular
Getting the van to the door takes some planning here. In 2020 Enfield closed several roads to through traffic as the Bowes Primary Quieter Neighbourhood, made permanent in January 2022: there are filters at the Maidstone Road and Warwick Road junction, at York Road where it meets Brownlow Road, on Palmerston Road at the North Circular, and on Warwick Road by Maidstone Road, and no right turn from Palmerston Road into Kelvin Avenue. Since September 2025 residents can apply for permits to pass the camera filters on Maidstone Road and Warwick Road. Our van has no such permit, so we come in from the open end of your road. Tell us the street when you book and we will plan the route.
Parking rules change at the borough line. On the Haringey side, the Bounds Green zone runs 10am to noon on weekdays. East of Green Lanes, Enfield’s Bowes East zone, in force since 8 January 2024, covers Tottenhall Road, Princes Avenue, Fairbrook Road and the roads round them from 11am to 1pm on weekdays. Bowes Road itself carries the North Circular past close-packed housing between Bounds Green and Green Lanes, so if you live on it, we park in the nearest side street and bring the hose round. Clear the stairs and hall before we arrive, and leave the front gate open.
The census around Bowes Road
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Purpose-built flats | 36.2% |
| Rented privately | 30.9% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 17.8% |
| Two-bedroom homes | 25.8% |
| Built before 1919 | 28.7% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 16.1% |
The census area that holds this page’s centre starts at the Arnos Grove end of Bowes Road and runs into New Southgate, so read it as a guide to Bowes as a whole. It shows plenty of flats: 45.7% of homes, with purpose-built blocks at 36.2%, many of them from the post-war years (16.1% of homes date from 1945 to 1972). Renting is common, 30.9% privately and 17.8% from the council or a housing association, so move-in and move-out cleans come up every week.
The Victorian houses are the other strand. Over a quarter of homes (28.7%) are older than 1919 and 7.0% older than 1900, and those are the bay-fronted terraces where the stairs take the most wear. Three bedrooms, a through-lounge and a flight of stairs in a terrace on Spencer Avenue comes to £210. A two-bedroom flat with a living room, the commonest flat size here (25.8% of homes have two bedrooms), is £115. Only 2.0% of homes are without central heating.

Family sofas and Victorian stairs
In Bowes we mostly clean for families. A fabric corner sofa before a party and a child’s mattress after a bad night are both a normal week’s work. New owners often book the whole house before they unpack, especially where the sellers kept a dog or cat. On a Victorian terrace staircase the same handful of treads takes every footstep, and that flight is usually where the effort goes.
Some marks have gone right through the wool into the underlay, often in a bay where condensation runs down the glass. Those lighten a great deal and sometimes leave a ghost. We spot them on the walk-round and say so before the machine goes on.
Services along Bowes Road
Our steam carpet cleaning is hot-water extraction, run from the van, and it suits both the old wool on terrace stairs and the synthetic carpet in the flats. Sofas and dining chairs come under upholstery cleaning, where we identify the fabric before choosing the method. A large patterned rug is handled by rug cleaning in the home: we pre-treat the marks, then shampoo and rinse it on the spot. Bowes is in Enfield, and our Enfield carpet cleaning page covers the rest of the borough.
If you live in Bowes
Which Bowes Park postcodes do you cover?
Every one. Bowes covers parts of N11, N13 and N22 on both sides of the Enfield and Haringey line, and we work either side, from the streets off Bowes Road and Brownlow Road round to Whittington Road and Tottenhall Road. Palmers Green and Wood Green are on our regular round as well.
Is parking a problem for the van on Bowes Park's terraced avenues?
Not really. Haringey’s Bounds Green zone is controlled only from 10am to noon on weekdays, so its side streets are free the rest of the time, and on the Enfield side the avenues are mostly plain kerbside parking. With long hoses we can work from a space several doors along.
Can you get pet smells out after we have moved in?
Usually. Odour from someone else’s pets sits in residue in the pile, and an enzyme pre-treatment followed by a hot extraction takes out most of it. Urine that has reached the underlay gets its own treatment, and if the underlay is beyond saving we will say so.
How long will carpet on a Victorian Bowes Park staircase take to dry?
Allow 6 to 7 hours. The machine recovers most of the water, so the pile is left only damp, and a morning clean is dry by the evening. A thick wool stair carpet over old boards holds more moisture and takes longer; opening a window upstairs helps the whole house dry.
Can your van get through the road closures?
Not through the camera filters, because the permits go to households. Every address inside the area can still be reached by road, sometimes by a longer way round, so we plan the approach from your street name before we set off. The hose run from the van to your door stays the same.
Do you clean in the 1920s and 1930s houses off Tottenhall Road?
Yes. These were built on Church Commissioners’ land from 1913 onward and finished through the 1930s, a generation after the Victorian avenues. Tottenhall Road is in the Bowes East permit zone, controlled 11am to 1pm on weekdays, so we book around that or use your visitor permit.
Our re-clean guarantee comes with every job: a treated spot that reappears gets a free second visit. Our cleaners are insured and DBS-checked, and Bowes has been on our north London round since 2009.
