Electric Avenue went up in the 1880s as one of the first shopping streets in the country lit by electricity, and the arcades of Market Row and Brixton Village behind it were Grade II listed in 2010. Around them are narrow stock-brick Victorian terraces, often two or three flats to a frontage. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned across Brixton, SW2 and SW9, since 2009. Prices start from £36 a room, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Market arcades, Victorian terraces and big estates
Brixton grew fast once the railway arrived. The station on Atlantic Road opened on 25 August 1862 as Brixton and South Stockwell, and the residential roads that followed are mostly Victorian terraces, narrow stock-brick fronts with a short tiled path and a long garden behind. A great many are now split into conversion flats, two or three behind one period frontage. The hallways show the age: small geometric tiles by the front door, the kind a vacuum never quite gets clean in the grout. Coldharbour Lane runs through the middle with flats above shops and older family houses at its quieter ends, and part of Railton Road (nos. 94 to 106) sits in the Poets’ Corner Conservation Area, designated in October 1998 with the terraces of Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare and Milton Roads.
The town centre is built round the market. Market Row dates from 1928, a double-height arcade between Atlantic Road, Coldharbour Lane and Electric Lane, and together with Reliance Arcade and Granville Arcade (now Brixton Village) it was listed after a local campaign to save it from redevelopment. Brixton tube is the southern end of the Victoria line, and the rail station now has Southeastern trains between Victoria and Orpington; the Overground line crosses above the platforms without stopping. Set against the terraces are the big estates, Loughborough and Angell Town to the east and Blenheim Gardens up the hill, which bring their own run of flats and stair carpets into the work.
Brixton Hill and Rush Common
Brixton Hill is the long climb of the A23 south from the town centre towards Streatham Hill, and most of what we clean there sits on the side roads running off it. The housing follows the same Victorian pattern, tall bay-fronted terraces split into flats on roads like New Park Road and Sudbourne Road, with the eastern side of the hill set back behind Rush Common, the green strip that an Inclosure Act of 1806 protected from building. Brixton Windmill has stood behind the Blenheim Gardens estate since 1816. The recurring job on the hill is the stair carpet in a flat one floor above the front door.
What kind of homes surround the market?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Social rented | 44.2% |
| Purpose-built flats | 57.4% |
| Flats over shops or in other converted buildings | 3.9% |
| One-bedroom homes | 29.6% |
| Built before 1900 | 35.1% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 20.7% |
The census area for central Brixton is mostly flats, and 57.4% of homes are in purpose-built blocks. Social renting covers 44.2% of households, so a large share of our Brixton work is in council and housing association flats, where the carpet has often been down a long time. 29.6% of homes have one bedroom, which makes for quick jobs, a bedroom and living room done before lunch.
The build dates show two Brixtons. 35.1% of homes are from before 1900, the terraces and conversions with their tiled halls and steep stairs, and 20.7% were built between 1973 and 1999, the later council and housing association blocks. The 3.9% of flats over shops or in other converted buildings are mostly up a narrow street door beside a shop. For a two-bed conversion flat off Railton Road, two bedrooms plus the living room come to £115.

Zones B and BI, and the A23
Lambeth runs two zones in the middle of Brixton. The Brixton Inner zone, BI, covers the streets round the market and the town hall: Electric Avenue, Brixton Oval, Rushcroft Road, Saltoun Road, Trinity Gardens, Tunstall Road and Coldharbour Lane between Brixton Road and Atlantic Road. The wider Brixton zone, B, covers the residential roads beyond, and when Lambeth last published its hours, in 2017, they were Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. Up the hill, the Brixton Hill zones run their own times, so we read the plate on the day.
Brixton Road and Brixton Hill are the A23, which TfL runs as a red route from Kennington out to Chipstead, so we never unload on the main road. For a flat on the A23 the van waits in the next street while the kit comes to your door by hand. For flats above shops round the market we bring the machine up the street door first and keep the doorway clear for the shop.

Upholstery, rugs and conversion stairs
The most frequent request is the conversion-flat lounge and stairs that have taken years of foot traffic from the front door straight up to the bedrooms. Tea and coffee on the landing is routine, and so is the front-room carpet with a glass of red wine trodden into it at a party. We lift the bulk of that and usually the mark is gone. On a pale carpet a faint shadow can stay if you look closely, and a stain that has soaked into the backing we can lighten but not always remove, which we say at the door. Upholstery is the other staple: the tired three-piece with grease on the headrests, and leather corner sofas that need cleaning and feeding so the cushions stop feeling tacky.
Our main method is hot-water extraction, which rinses out the grit a vacuum leaves at the foot of the pile, with the water matched to the fibre: a deep rinse for a heavy-use hall, less moisture for wool. Tired settees and grubby cushions come back with sofa and upholstery cleaning, and we clean wool and patterned rugs in the room with proper rug cleaning, asking for a photo first on silk. Stockwell and Loughborough Junction are next door, with their own Stockwell carpet cleaning and Loughborough Junction pages, and the rest of the borough is on our Lambeth page at the same fixed prices.
Brixton customers ask us
Which postcodes around Brixton do you cover, from the market to Brixton Hill?
The whole of SW9 and SW2, from the town centre and the market up Brixton Hill and across to the Loughborough Junction and Angell Town side. That takes in Coldharbour Lane, Railton Road, Mostyn Road and the streets off them, plus Blenheim Gardens. We have worked these streets since 2009, and nowhere in them carries a call-out fee.
Can you clean a Persian or wool rug without damaging it?
Yes, with a few checks first. Wool and Persian rugs are cleaned in your home, after we test the dyes and pre-treat the marks, then shampooed and rinsed by hot-water extraction. Wax, like candle wax dripped at a dinner, lifts off wool safely when it is handled the right way, never scrubbed, and the colours are protected through the wash. For silk or a very old piece, send us a photo first.
Will the van find somewhere to park?
Much of Brixton sits inside Lambeth’s Brixton zones, B and the inner BI round the market, so we factor that in when you book. The van needs space near the door to run the hose, and we carry a long hose for when it cannot sit close, which is common on the tighter terraced streets and around the market. Tell us your road and we sort the access before the day.
How long will a stair carpet in a Brixton conversion flat take to dry?
Six to seven hours, usually, because so little water is left in the pile after extraction. A stair carpet cleaned in the morning, in a converted terrace off Railton Road or Coldharbour Lane, is generally dry by the evening. Open a window or put the heating on low to help it along.
Do you do leather corner sofas?
Yes. Leather gets a different treatment: we clean the surface with a leather cleaner, work the grime out of the seams and the headrests, and finish with a conditioner so the hide stays soft. It is done in your living room and is ready to sit on straight away. If the leather is cracked or the colour has worn through, cleaning will not hide it, and we will say so when we see it.
What should I do with a party spill before you arrive?
Blot it with a clean white cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub. Scrape off anything solid, like wax or food, with a blunt knife. Avoid washing-up liquid and household carpet sprays, because the residue attracts dirt and can set some stains. Then leave it for us and tell us what was spilt and when, so we choose the right pre-treatment.
If a treated mark reappears, the return visit is free. Every cleaner is insured and DBS-checked, and SW9 and SW2 have been on our books since 2009.
