A castellated house built around 1800 gave Castle Green its name and stood until 1938; the ground it left is now a school campus at the foot of Gale Street, ringed by Becontree cottages and post-war flats. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Castle Green, RM9, since 2009, at fixed prices from £36 a room with no call-out fee. Carpets are normally dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From a mock castle to a school campus

Castle Green is the bottom edge of the Becontree estate, the cottage estate the London County Council built between 1921 and 1935 under the Homes Fit for Heroes programme, in its day the largest public housing estate in the world. The streets between Becontree station and the A13 are lined with its classic two- and three-bedroom brick cottages: short terraces with small front gardens, one staircase, and a front room and back room that many households knocked into a single through-lounge decades ago. A large share went to owners under Right to Buy, so one street mixes well-kept family homes with rentals and the odd converted flat.

The Castle Green centre at the foot of Gale Street holds Jo Richardson Community School, which moved into its purpose-built campus in 2005. A library and a theatre share the site, and Barking Rugby Football Club uses its sports facilities. Becontree station, on the District line in Zone 5, opened on Gale Street in 1926 as Gale Street Halt, and it is still how most of the neighbourhood gets to work; the 173 and 287 buses thread through the estate roads.

Which homes does the census count here?

Homes with one bedroom23.3%

The census area that contains Castle Green is the one the ONS calls Thames View, and its figures describe that estate more than the cottages by Gale Street. Barking Borough Council built Thames View between 1954 and 1960 on piled foundations over the marsh, about 2,000 homes in flats and maisonettes with terraced houses among them, and the VOA count reflects it: 54.1% of homes date from 1945 to 1972, and just 0.3% from between the wars. Newer blocks make up most of the rest, with 38.4% built since 2000.

So the area splits in two for us. Half the homes (50.2%) are purpose-built flats, some of them maisonettes with an internal staircase, and 23.3% have a single bedroom, where a clean is usually one bedroom and the living room. Nearly half (48.2%) are rented from the council or a housing association, so the move-out clean is a regular booking. In the Becontree cottages and the 28.7% of homes that are terraced, the job is the full house. Three bedrooms, a through-lounge and one flight of stairs come to £210 in total. Only 2.8% of homes have no central heating, so drying is rarely a worry.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Barking and Dagenham 022) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Paved front gardens and the flyover works

Plenty of the cottage front gardens are now paved as hardstanding, which makes unloading a machine easy on most turnings, and if yours is one we will use it. Streets close to Becontree station sit inside a controlled parking zone, so we plan for permit bays there; elsewhere the kerb is usually free. On the Thames View side, Samuel Ferguson Place by Thames View Junior School is a school street, closed to motor traffic on weekdays from 8am to 9.15am and from 2.45pm to 4pm except for permit holders, so we book those addresses outside the school hours.

The A13 is the other thing to plan around. TfL is replacing the Lodge Avenue flyover, the 1973 structure that carries the A13 over the Ripple Road roundabout. It expects the work to take about two and a half years, with two lanes kept open each way for most of it, and the 287 is due to move onto Goresbrook Road during the works. We allow extra travel time for any job near the roundabout. Indoors, the narrow cottage hall is the route for the hoses, so clear it before we arrive.

Traffic film on the carpet edges

Most of our Castle Green bookings are working family homes. A typical visit is a front room and hallway brought back to colour, or a fabric corner sofa that has done years of service. Mattresses come up in the houses off Ripple Road, and kitchen tile and grout get cleaned while the machine is already in the van outside. In a Becontree cottage the hall and stairs take the hardest wear, because the whole household funnels up one staircase, so we always ask about those before quoting the rest.

Homes near the A13 collect a fine dark traffic film, and it settles as grey shadows along carpet edges and under doors. A deep clean lightens those lines a great deal, but on pale carpet the marking is partly permanent, and we tell you that at the door. Keeping the windows on the road side shut in heavy traffic slows its return.

Corner sofas and rugs, cleaned in the house

Most jobs here are hot water extraction carpet cleaning, which suits the hard-wearing twist piles fitted through most of these cottages. Corner sofas and mattresses come under our upholstery cleaning service, and rugs are cleaned in your home on the visit; the rug cleaning page has the sizes and prices. The same crew covers Becontree to the north and Dagenham to the east, along with the rest of Barking & Dagenham.

Before you book in Castle Green

Where does your Castle Green coverage run, from Becontree station southwards?

All of Castle Green. We cover the streets between Becontree station and the A13 and the turnings off Gale Street and Ripple Road, out to the RM9 edges where Castle Green runs into the rest of Barking and Dagenham. If you can see the Castle Green centre at the foot of Gale Street from your road, you are well inside our patch.

Where do your cleaners park?

Streets close to Becontree station sit inside a controlled parking zone, so we plan for permit bays there, and most other Castle Green streets still have kerbside space outside the door. If your front garden is paved, we park on it with your permission. We also allow extra time while TfL replaces the Lodge Avenue flyover on the A13.

Can an original Becontree cottage carpet come back to life?

Usually, yes. Most carpets in these cottages are synthetic twist piles that respond very well to hot water extraction, and flattened traffic lanes lift noticeably once the pile is rinsed and groomed. Where we find wool, often in an older front room, we switch to a cooler, wool-safe clean.

How quickly do carpets dry in a Castle Green through-lounge?

dry within 6 to 7 hours is normal in Castle Green’s Becontree cottages, and a morning clean is usually fully dry by evening. We extract most of the moisture as we go, then advise opening a window or two. With a through-lounge running front to back, the cross-draught does the rest.

We live on the Thames View estate. Do you come over from Castle Green?

Yes, Thames View is on the same rounds. The estate was built between 1954 and 1960, so most homes are flats or maisonettes, and the job is usually a living room and bedrooms, with stairs in the maisonettes. We park near the block and use the lift where there is one. The prices are the same fixed rates as anywhere in the borough.

How do you price the inside stairs of a maisonette?

As a normal flight, from £41, the same as the stairs in a house. Maisonette stairs are often narrow and boxed in, so we clean the treads with the machine and finish the edges and risers by hand. Tell us whether the hall at the top is carpeted when you book, and the quote will include it.

Every Castle Green clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if any area falls short, we come back and do it again free of charge. Our technicians are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have been cleaning carpets across east London since 2009.
