Archibald Corbett laid out much of Catford as a tidy grid of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and many are still carpeted in wool that has been down for years. London Carpet Cleaning works across Catford, SE6, from those streets to the split flats on Brownhill Road and the new homes on the old greyhound stadium site. Each room is from £36, fixed, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Where does Catford’s housing come from?
Catford covers most of SE6, and a large share of its housing is the Corbett Estate, the terraces Archibald Corbett built south from Hither Green with deep back gardens and original staircases. Around Bromley Road is a different suburb. There the Forster family, who owned the land, had villas built from the late 1890s along Canadian Avenue (then called Berlin Road) and Bromley Road, many by the Scottish builder James Watt, and their Sangley Farm estate to the east filled in between 1902 and the 1920s. Lewisham made that area the Culverley Green Conservation Area in 1990: rows of semi-detached villas on wide tree-lined streets, with sash windows, stained glass and solid timber doors.
Closer to the centre, where the A205 South Circular crosses the A21 at the gyratory, many of the larger houses on roads like Brownhill Road and Bromley Road were split into flats, plenty of them rented, so one street can hold a settled family terrace and a one-bed conversion with a changing cast of tenants. The Catford Cat looks down over the Catford Centre, and a short walk east takes you up into Mountsfield Park. A lot of these homes are carpeted in wool, and the wear settles into the same traffic lanes and the same stairs.
Catford’s homes in numbers
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 22.3% |
| Semi-detached houses | 11.5% |
| Flats in converted houses | 23.1% |
| Built before 1900 | 46.6% |
| Three bedrooms | 21.2% |
| Owned by the people living in them | 40.6% |
The census area around the stations is older than its busy roads suggest: 46.6% of homes were built before 1900. Terraced houses make up 22.3% and semis 11.5%, and almost a quarter of homes (23.1%) are flats carved out of houses, the Brownhill Road pattern. So a Catford booking is either a house with a staircase or one floor of a conversion, with a shared stair carpet that belongs to everyone in the building.
About one home in five (21.2%) has three bedrooms. In a three-bed Catford terrace, the bedrooms, the front room and one flight of stairs total £192. Owner-occupiers hold 40.6% of homes, and in those houses the wool carpets have often been down for years. Just 3.0% of homes have no central heating, which keeps drying times predictable here.

Permit zones and the gyratory
Catford is not short of controlled parking. Around Catford, Catford West (K), Canadian Avenue (J), Barmeston Road (M) and Mountsfield Park (W) all run Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, besides the three Rushey Green zones along the high street. The newest is Ravensbourne Park (RP), part of Lewisham’s Sustainable Streets programme, which went live on 15 January 2024 and runs Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. On those streets the van needs a visitor permit or a paid bay on weekdays, which we arrange with you when you book; at weekends parking is free.
The South Circular and the A21 around the gyratory are no place to unload, so if your flat faces one of them, we park in the nearest side street and walk the hose round, and we carry enough of it to reach a back bedroom from there. Lewisham and Transport for London plan new crossings by the Broadway Theatre and on Brownhill Road from 2027, so expect some roadworks then. The traffic clogs at peak times, so if we are running behind we ring ahead.
Catford Bridge and the stadium site
Catford Bridge is the lower of the area’s two side-by-side stations, with four Southeastern trains an hour to Charing Cross, two of them through Lewisham. Catford station next door has Thameslink trains to Blackfriars. Between them lay Catford Stadium, the greyhound track that closed overnight without warning on 6 November 2003, later burned and was demolished. Barratt built the Catford Green housing on the site. The streets behind Catford Bridge run down toward Ladywell Fields and the River Ravensbourne, so homes here are a mix of period terraces and newer flats, and they pick up the same park and river mud as the rest of SE6.
The stains we see most
The job we are asked about most in SE6 is the family carpet that has taken a knock: felt-tip in a front room, or the muddy patch a dog leaves halfway up the stairs. We pre-treat each mark to suit the fibre and rinse it out, and most come up far better than the owner expected. The wool rugs common in these period lounges we treat for pet accidents and odour on the spot, working the rinse down to the backing.
A coffee or red-wine mark that has sat in a pale carpet for weeks has often dyed the fibre itself, and on those we can lighten the patch a long way without promising to erase it. We tell you that before we start.

Fitted carpets, upholstery and rugs in SE6
Fitted carpets and stairs get hot-water extraction, set to the fibre: a gentler, drier pass for old wool and a hotter rinse for a hard-wearing synthetic. We also restore sofas and armchairs with upholstery cleaning. Wool rugs get specialist rug cleaning in the room, and for other delicate pieces we ask for a photo first. The Lewisham carpet cleaning page lists the rest of the borough, and we also work in neighbouring Rushey Green and Bellingham.
Catford carpet cleaning questions
Do you cover all of Catford, from Culverley Green to the gyratory?
All of it, from the Corbett streets and Culverley Green through the town centre to the Bellingham and Southend edges of SE6. We work both sides of the South Circular and around the gyratory below the Catford Cat, and there is no call-out fee wherever you are. The team has cleaned this part of Lewisham since 2009.
Is parking a problem for the van on Catford streets?
It needs a little planning. Much of central Catford is in a controlled zone on weekdays, Canadian Avenue and Ravensbourne Park included, so we use a visitor permit or a paid bay. Where a street is tight or busy near the gyratory, we bring a long hose so the van can sit a little further off and still reach your door. Tell us the road when you book.
Can you get pet mess and odour out of a wool rug?
Usually yes. We treat pet accidents on wool in your home: flush the affected fibres, neutralise the odour at its source and rinse the rug right through with the hot-water machine. Cat and dog accidents are some of the most common jobs we do in SE6 homes, and most come out fresh. If the rug is very old or fragile, send us a photo first and we will tell you what is safe.
How long does wool take to dry in a Catford Corbett Estate terrace?
Expect 6 to 7 hours before the carpet is dry. Wool that has been down for decades gets a lighter, drier clean so it cannot shrink, and a radiator on low plus an open window has most rooms back in use by evening.
Do you clean the flats at Catford Green, on the old stadium site?
Yes. Newer flats like these usually have a synthetic carpet laid at the build, pale and quick to show traffic lanes, and a clean in the first few years keeps the grit from wearing it. Tell us the block and the floor, and whether we need a fob or the concierge, and we will plan the hose run from the van.
Can you clean the shared stairs in a Brownhill Road conversion?
Yes. The shared stair takes every flat’s traffic, and we price it as stairs, from £41 a flight. We can do it on the same visit as your own flat. Tell us whose name goes on the receipt if the freeholder or the other flats are sharing the cost.
If a spot returns after we leave, so do we, and the re-clean guarantee means you pay nothing for it. Every cleaner we send to SE6 is DBS-checked, the firm is fully insured, and we have worked across Catford since 2009.
