Chalk Farm sits on the Primrose Hill fringe, and most of what we clean here went up between about 1845 and 1875, when the fields north of Camden filled with terraces and stucco-fronted Italianate villas. Chalcot Square is the picture-book version of it: Grade II listed houses in painted stucco, pink and green and blue, all inside the Primrose Hill conservation area. Because of that, a lot of the work is in conversion flats rather than whole houses. The raised-ground and lower-ground floors are the ones we visit most, and they behave very differently from each other. Chalk Farm tube, on the Edgware branch of the Northern line between Camden Town and Belsize Park, is the closest station to Primrose Hill, so the park is a short walk from most front doors and a good deal of what ends up on a carpet walks in from it.
