Bedford Park, begun in 1875 to Norman Shaw’s designs and often called the first garden suburb, sets the tone for Chiswick with Queen Anne Revival red brick, generous landings and wool stair runners. Around Turnham Green there are tall Victorian and Edwardian terraces and mansion blocks such as Heathfield Court. Those runners are everyday work for London Carpet Cleaning in Chiswick, W4, from £36 a room, and a cleaned runner is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Bedford Park, the green and the river

Chiswick is one of the most period parts of west London. Bedford Park began in 1875, when the cloth merchant Jonathan Carr bought 24 acres near Turnham Green station, and every surviving house of the original suburb was listed Grade II in 1967. The Hounslow part has been a conservation area since April 1970, with an Article 4 direction on parts of it since 2001, and the rest of the estate lies over the line in Ealing. Around Turnham Green you get tall Victorian and Edwardian terraces and period mansion blocks such as Heathfield Court and Arlington Mansions. Grove Park, south of the railway, was the first large Victorian housing estate in Chiswick and has been a conservation area since January 2002. The riverside end has grand Georgian and Victorian houses, including the Grade I listed Walpole House on Chiswick Mall.

Two District line stations anchor the middle. Turnham Green, on Turnham Green Terrace just north of the High Road, carries District trains plus an early and late Piccadilly service. Chiswick Park, opened in 1879 as Acton Green and rebuilt by Charles Holden in 1931 and 1932, stands at the Bollo Lane and Acton Lane junction on the Ealing Broadway branch. The roads we are called to most are the long terraced avenues off Chiswick High Road and Devonshire Road, including Airedale Avenue, Grove Park Terrace and Fishers Lane, with the larger family houses on Bedford Park Avenue and Burlington Lane.

Around Chiswick: three corners of W4

Chiswick Riverside takes in the oldest stretch of the area, from Strand-on-the-Green with its 18th-century houses and towpath pubs round to Chiswick Mall by St Nicholas Church. These are listed or near-listed homes close to the Thames, so damp in the air and slower drying are part of the picture, and we plan ground-floor and basement rooms with extra air movement and dehumidifying.

Chiswick Park covers the Acton Green side around the Holden station, where the terraces are a little plainer and the through-lounges common. It is also home to the large Chiswick Park business campus off Bollo Lane, and we are regularly booked there and in the flats nearby. Bedford Park, to the north, is split between Hounslow and Ealing, and both halves are on our round.

What the census says about central Chiswick

Homes that areShare
Built before 190036.2%
Built 1919 to 194422.0%
Flats in converted houses19.8%
Rented privately45.2%
Homes with one bedroom31.6%
Homes with four or more bedrooms18.8%

The census area that covers the middle of Chiswick runs from Turnham Green west towards Chiswick Park and Gunnersbury. More than a third of its homes (36.2%) were built before 1900, and another 22.0% between the wars. The striking number is renting: 45.2% of households rent privately, nearly half of everyone, and almost one home in five (19.8%) is a flat cut out of a converted house. That is a lot of shared halls and stairs, and a lot of tenancy changes, each one ending in a check-out clean with a dated receipt for the inventory clerk.

The bedroom figures show the two Chiswicks side by side. Nearly a third of homes (31.6%) have one bedroom, the conversions and small flats, while 18.8% have four or more, the family houses on the avenues. A three-bed terrace off the High Road, with the front room and its one flight of stairs, comes to £192; a one-bed conversion is often just the bedroom and living room.

Wool, old Persians and tired linen

The job here leans on older fibres and good furniture. We clean a lot of wool carpet and inherited rugs, the kind of antique Persian that has lived in a drawing room for decades, plus linen and leather upholstery that has done a few years of family service. A felt-tip mishap on a tan Chesterfield or a coffee ring on a pale sofa is a normal Chiswick week for us.

Old wool has limits. On a period carpet, deep sun-fade along a south-facing bay or years of foot traffic flattening the pile will not come back with cleaning, because the fibre itself has changed. We lift the dirt and revive the colour, but worn wool stays worn, and we say so at the start.

Cycle lane, permit zones and where the van stops

Chiswick High Road has had a permanent cycle lane, Cycleway 9, since October 2023, running from Heathfield Terrace east towards Goldhawk Road. The council kept loading areas and service roads along most of the south side, so for a flat over a shop we use those or the nearest side street, and never the cycle track. Behind the High Road almost every street is permit-controlled. The Mid Chiswick zone north of the High Road runs 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and in late 2024 Hounslow moved to add Sundays; the East Chiswick zone runs the same hours on weekdays and Saturdays.

Down by the station the hours are shorter. The Chiswick Station zone, brought in in September 2019, covers Grove Park Road, Hartington Road, Spencer Road, Kinnaird Avenue and the roads around them, and it only applies Monday to Friday from 10am to noon. A visitor permit from you, or a paid session on the app, keeps the van legal.

How much does carpet cleaning cost in Chiswick?

Our prices are fixed and match every other London borough, and coming out to you costs nothing extra:

  • Bedroom carpet, from £36 each
  • Living room carpet from £43
  • Through-lounge from £61
  • Stairs, one flight, from £41
  • Two-seater sofa from £57
  • Rug up to 3m² from £35

Larger or heavily soiled rooms cost a little more, so we measure on arrival and confirm the figure before any work begins. Get a free quote, or call us on 020 8077 8090.

Carpet, rug and upholstery methods for period homes

Most jobs are hot-water extraction, what people call steam carpet cleaning, which suits Chiswick wool and period carpet well when the heat and moisture are set for the fibre. We also handle sofas, dining chairs and curtains through our upholstery cleaning service, including leather feeding and conditioning, and delicate or valuable rugs get our specialist rug cleaning in your home, once a photo has told us the piece is safe to clean on site. If your home is over the line in Brentford, Isleworth or elsewhere in the rest of Hounslow, the same team and the same prices apply, and we work the W4 streets across into Bedford Park and Turnham Green every week.

Chiswick W4: what customers ask

Which Chiswick postcodes and roads do you cover?

The whole of W4: Bedford Park, Turnham Green, Acton Green, Grove Park and the riverside down to Strand-on-the-Green and Chiswick Mall. From the avenues off the High Road to the family houses on Burlington Lane and Bedford Park Avenue, if it is in Chiswick we will come to you.

Is parking a problem for the van near Devonshire Road in Chiswick?

It is manageable with a quick word first. The streets either side of the High Road sit in Hounslow permit zones, most of them 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, while the Chiswick Station zone by Grove Park only runs on weekday mornings. Tell us the road when you book and we find the nearest legal spot so the hoses reach your front door.

Can you clean an antique or inherited rug safely?

Often, and a lot of Chiswick rugs are exactly that. Send us a photo first and we will tell you whether the rug can be cleaned safely on site; very old or silk pieces sometimes cannot, and we do not promise silk. Where it is fine to go ahead, we vacuum it, pre-treat the marks and clean it in your home by hot-water extraction, with no rush.

How long will carpets take to dry in a riverside home?

In most rooms, carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours. Ground-floor and basement rooms near the Thames hold a little more moisture, so we use stronger extraction and air movers there, and full drying can take longer. You get a realistic time for your room before we leave.

My flat is above a shop on Chiswick High Road. Where do you unload?

Not in the cycle lane. Since Cycleway 9 became permanent in October 2023, most of the south side has loading areas and service roads, and side streets run off the north side. We stop in a loading bay or a side road, carry the kit to your door and run the hose from there.

Our house is in Bedford Park. Does it matter whether we are in Hounslow or Ealing?

Not for us. Bedford Park straddles the borough line, and the prices, the team and the guarantee are the same on both sides. It matters more for parking, since the two councils run different permit schemes, so give us the full address and we check the right one.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right, we come back and fix it at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and Chiswick homes have been on our books since 2009.

What our customers say in Chiswick.

★★★★★
We have an antique Persian rug in the drawing room that my wife inherited and we were nervous about who to trust with it. They clearly knew what they were doing, the colours came up beautifully and they were careful with the fringing. Worth every penny.
Rupert HadleyBedford Park Avenue, W4 · Rug cleaning
★★★★★
Our linen sofa had a coffee ring and some general grubbiness after a year of use. The result was lovely, all the marks lifted and the cushions plumped back up nicely. Very tidy and professional throughout.
Camilla AshworthGrove Park Terrace, W4 · Sofa & upholstery cleaning
★★★★★
Our heavy lined curtains in the front room had gone dusty and a bit smoky from the open fire. They took them down, cleaned them and rehung them, and the room smells fresh again. Couldn't fault them.
Rosalind QuartermaineFishers Lane, W4 · Curtain cleaning
★★★★★
Our tan leather Chesterfield had dried out and there were ink marks where my son had a felt tip mishap. They cleaned and conditioned it and the ink came out entirely. Leather feels supple again, really impressed.
Sebastian LockwoodDevonshire Road, W4 · Leather sofa cleaning
★★★★★
Cleaned the lounge and the stairs in our Victorian terrace. A coffee ring by the sofa and a general dinginess down the stairs have both gone. The original wool carpet looks years younger. Delighted.

Our pale linen sofa had a red wine splash from a dinner party plus the usual arm grime. Came up immaculate, you genuinely can't tell where the wine was. Friendly and careful with the room.
