What City Thameslink homes are like
City Thameslink is named after the station, not a village, and the station tells you most of what you need to know about the patch around it. It opened in 1990 on the site of the old Holborn Viaduct terminus, the first mainline station built in central London in almost a hundred years, with one entrance on Ludgate Hill just off Ludgate Circus and another up on Holborn Viaduct. There is no Tube here, though the wide corridor at the Ludgate end was built to meet a Fleet Line platform that was never dug. What sits above and around the tracks is offices: the Fleet Place estate, One and Five Fleet Place, runs right behind the station, and the Old Bailey stands two minutes north on the corner of Newgate Street.
Homes here are the exception, and they hide in the older lanes. There are apartments and listed conversions off Carter Lane in the St Paul’s conservation area to the south, upper-floor flats around Pilgrim Street and Limeburner Lane, and residential blocks folded in among the offices near Fleet Place. Barristers’ chambers around the Old Bailey carry rooms on their higher floors. Most of what we clean is a flat above a working street or a floor of an office, not a family house with a garden.
