The Round Chapel on Lower Clapton Road, a Grade II* chapel of 1871, stands among Victorian terraces that look much as they did when the streets were laid out. London Carpet Cleaning covers Clapton, E5, from Clapton Pond to Millfields, with prices from £36 a room and carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Upper Clapton, Lower Clapton and the pond between
Locals split the area at the Lea Bridge Road junction: Upper Clapton to the north, Lower Clapton to the south. Clapton Pond sits about halfway between the two old villages. It was dug in the early 17th century, served as a reservoir through much of the 18th, and has been a public garden since 1898, now in two railed enclosures either side of Newick Road. Around it stand Pond House, a Grade II* villa of about 1800, and the Bishopswood Almshouses, first built in the late 17th century. Further south, Clapton Square has been a conservation area since 1969, with listed Georgian and early Victorian terraces facing its railed garden.
Most of the rest is Victorian terrace from the second half of the 19th century, and plenty of the big houses have been split into flats and shared houses, so on one road we clean a whole-house carpet on the first job and a single upstairs room on the next. Clapton station, on the Weaver line of the London Overground, is one stop from Hackney Downs, and the buses run down Lower Clapton Road past the Round Chapel. Many of these homes keep wool-rich carpet upstairs, which is what we set the machine for.
North and south of the junction, and Clapton Park
Lower Clapton is the southern half, running down Lower Clapton Road from the pond towards Hackney Central. It holds most of the terraced stock, streets such as Powerscroft Road and Glenarm Road, and it is where most of our carpet and stairs work lands. Upper Clapton is the northern half, up towards Stamford Hill and the edge of Springfield Park, which slopes down to the River Lea towpath. The houses there run larger, some of them grand, and many are converted into flats, so we see more whole-floor carpet and longer stair runs.
Clapton Park sits on the eastern side of Lower Clapton and mixes two kinds of home: the Victorian terraces around Chatsworth Road, with its Sunday market, and the post-war Clapton Park Estate run by a residents’ management organisation. We clean in both, and for the estate flats we plan the visit around access and the lift where there is one.
What share of Clapton homes are flats?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats of any kind | 82.5% |
| Terraced houses | 11.9% |
| Owned, outright or with a mortgage | 25.7% |
| Rented privately | 27.8% |
| Three bedrooms | 22.0% |
| Built before 1919 | 43.7% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 20.3% |
A large share: 82.5% in the census area that covers the Clapton end of Lea Bridge Road, which the ONS names after Hackney Downs ward. Only 11.9% of homes are terraced houses, even though 43.7% of all homes went up before 1919, which means most of the Victorian houses round here have been divided. A further 20.3% date from 1945 to 1972, the post-war blocks.
Ownership is low, at 25.7% of households, and 27.8% rent privately, so a lot of our work is the flat between tenants or the room let in a shared house. The 22.0% of homes with three bedrooms are the family flats and the houses still in one piece. In a Lower Clapton terrace with three bedrooms, the front room and a single flight of stairs, the bill is £192. Just 2.2% of homes have no central heating.

Builders’ dust and tacky leather
Three jobs come up again and again. The first is loft and refurbishment dust. Clapton is full of houses being extended, and once the builders leave there is a fine film of grit worked into the bedroom carpets that a vacuum will not lift and hot-water extraction will. The second is family upholstery: leather corner sofas gone tacky on the arms and fabric two-seaters the grandchildren have made grubby. The third is the stairs and landings in the terraces, where the treads take the worst of the daily traffic.
Set-in marks are the limit. A grease spot deep in a sofa arm or a years-old stain in a wool pile will lift a long way but may not go completely, and a faint shadow can wick back as the fibre dries. We tell you on the day what we expect to shift fully and what will only improve, so nothing surprises you afterwards.
Parking above and below the junction
The Lea Bridge Road junction also divides the parking zones. Upper Clapton Road and the streets north of the junction are in Hackney’s zone U, controlled Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm. Lower Clapton, from the pond southwards, is zone N, controlled Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6.30pm, so it is free to park in on Saturdays. Clapton Square, further south, falls in zone S. Inside the hours we use a paid bay or your visitor permit and load close to the door.
Many conversions have a narrow shared hall and a steep stair to the upper flat, so clear the route from the front door before we come. In the estate blocks, tell us the block and floor, and whether the lift is working. If builders have just finished, sweep up the loose debris first; we deal with the dust in the pile.

Carpet, sofa and rug work across E5
Carpets are cleaned by hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning, which rinses out the dust and lifts the pile without soaking the underlay. For sofas and dining chairs, our upholstery cleaning is matched to the fabric or the leather, with leather cleaned and fed so the arms stop feeling tacky. Loose rugs are cleaned in the home through rug cleaning, which suits pet accidents, with a photo sent first for anything delicate. One team covers the whole borough, so the same fixed prices apply across Hackney carpet cleaning and neighbouring corners such as Hackney Downs and Rectory Road.
What Clapton customers want to know
Which Clapton postcodes do you cover, from Clapton Pond to Millfields?
The whole of E5: Lower Clapton, Upper Clapton, Clapton Park, the streets around Clapton Pond and Millfields, and across to the Hackney Marshes side by the River Lea. Streets in the neighbouring postcodes are on the same round, so if you are just over the border towards Hackney Central or Stamford Hill we still come.
Is parking a problem for your van in Lower Clapton’s zone N?
Not really. Zone N runs Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6.30pm, so paid bays and permits apply in the daytime, and on Saturdays the bays are open. We are used to it and load close to the door. A visitor permit helps, and on the quieter terraced turnings it is rarely an issue. North of the junction, zone U also covers Saturdays.
Can you get builders’ dust out of carpets after an extension?
Yes, it is one of our commonest Clapton jobs. Fine plaster and timber dust settles deep in the pile and resists vacuuming, so we use a strong pre-vacuum and then hot-water extraction to flush it out, working the edges and corners by hand. Upstairs bedrooms after a loft conversion come up clean, with no dusty cast left on the pile.
How long do carpets take to dry here?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours and fully dry within the day with a window open. Stairs and landings, with their thicker pile and underlay, can hold damp a little longer, so we often suggest keeping off a freshly cleaned landing overnight to be safe. Converted-flat rooms with less airflow may want a little extra time too.
Our leather sofa has gone tacky on the arms. Can you fix that?
Usually, yes. The tackiness is body oil and old polish built up on the finish, so we clean it off with a leather cleaner matched to the hide, then feed the leather so it does not dry out. The arms come back smooth to the touch. A two-seater starts at £57, and we check a hidden patch first so the colour stays put.
Should we book before or after the decorators finish?
After. Sanding and painting keep raising dust for a day or two, and it all lands on the carpet, so book us once the last trade has gone and the room has had a day to settle. Sweep up loose debris and pick up any paint spots you can; we vacuum hard before the wash and treat the rest.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right once it has dried, we come back and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Clapton and the rest of Hackney since 2009.
