Clissold Road began in 1850 as Park Road, on glebe land the rector leased to Charles Birch, and its odd numbers from 1 to 39 are 1850s Italianate houses, three storeys over a basement, built in groups of four. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned in Clissold, N16, since 2009, mostly in tall houses now split into flats. A room costs from £36, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Park Road, Park Lane and the poets’ streets
Clissold is the ward south of the park, between Church Street and Newington Green, and it was fields until the 1820s. In 1821 the 60-acre Pulteney estate went up for sale in small lots along two roads that existed only on paper: Albion Road and the road now called Clissold Crescent. Thomas Cubitt bought much of the northern end of Albion Road and began building there in 1823. Park Road, today’s Clissold Road, followed, with 39 houses under way in 1851 and 1852.
East of Albion Road, the National Freehold Land Society laid out Albert Town by 1852 and named its roads after poets. 53 separate builders put up its houses in the 1850s, and Albion Grove, Milton Grove and Shakspeare Walk all belong to that scheme. Clissold Crescent was still called Park Lane in 1893, when Carysfort Road was cut out of it and 76 houses were built along it, mostly by H. C. Foulkes and W. Whymark. So the houses here were built up to seventy years apart, and most are now an upper and a lower flat with the original boards under the carpet.
The council filled the gaps after the war. Milton Gardens, 76 flats, opened in Albert Town in 1949, and more than 200 further flats in blocks named after poets followed between 1954 and 1970. Medway House and Crawshay House on Clissold Crescent date from 1954 to 1959. The whole east side of Clissold Road came down after 1952, and Clissold Park school opened on the site in 1969; it is Stoke Newington School today. The Clissold Park conservation area, also of 1969, covers the park and the two parish churches, and the streets south of it sit outside the boundary.
Three homes in ten are flats inside old houses
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in purpose-built blocks | 36.4% |
| Flats in converted houses | 30.6% |
| Terraced houses | 24.4% |
| Rented privately | 33.1% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 23.9% |
| Built before 1900 | 60.0% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 16.9% |
The census calls these streets Clissold South. Its largest group is the purpose-built flat, at 36.4% of homes, and those are mostly the post-war council blocks. Close behind come flats inside converted houses, 30.6%, while only 24.4% of homes are terraced houses still lived in as one. So the usual Clissold booking is a flat on one or two floors of a Victorian house, with a shared front door, a hall carpet every resident walks over, and a steep flight up to the top flat.
60.0% of homes went up before 1900 and 16.9% between 1945 and 1972, with little in between. A third of households (33.1%) rent privately and 23.9% rent from the council or a housing association, so move-out cleans with a dated receipt for the letting agent are a regular booking. For the upper flat in a divided Albion Grove house, with two bedrooms and the living room, the bill is £115. Only 1.8% of homes have no central heating, but 8.6% heat by electricity alone; a carpet dries more slowly under storage heaters in winter, so we ask you to leave a window open a crack.

What do we clean most south of the park?
Family flats near the park book sofas and stair carpets worn by years of daily use, often three seats and a hallway in one visit. Further north, nearer Lordship Road and the Stamford Hill edge, whole-house cleans before Pesach and other festivals take one long appointment, every room in turn. Wine spilled at a dinner party is routine work here, and most of it lifts with the right pre-treatment.
The kitchen doorway is the hardest spot. Cooking grease built into a wool pile over several winters lightens with a hot-water clean and the smell goes, but a set-in greasy patch on a pale carpet does not always come back to new. We tell you that at the door, before the machine goes on.
Zone M, the school gates and tall staircases
Every street in this pocket, from Clissold Crescent and Burma Road across to Albion Grove and Shakspeare Walk, is in Hackney’s parking zone M. It is controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and from 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, so in those hours the van needs a paid bay or one of your visitor permits. A little further east the zone changes: Nevill Road and Allen Road are in zone E, which keeps the same hours. We run the hose from the nearest bay, so you never give up your own space.
Stoke Newington School fills the east side of Clissold Road, and the pavements are busy with pupils at the start and end of the school day, so on that road we arrive once the morning crowd has gone in. Inside, the 1850s houses run to three storeys over a basement, and a top-floor flat can mean three flights from the street door. Tell us the floor when you book, and keep pets in a spare room while the hose runs up the stairs.

Sofas, mattresses and rugs on the same visit
Fitted carpets and stairs get hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the pile and draws the water back out so it is dry within 6 to 7 hours. Family sofas and tub chairs go through our upholstery cleaning, matched to the fabric, and a mattress can be done while we are there. Bigger lounge rugs get specialist rug cleaning in the home, with the light furniture moved aside for you. The same fixed prices and the same guarantee cover the rest of Hackney.
Before you book a clean in Clissold
Which streets around Clissold Park and Church Street do you cover?
All of N16 around the park: Clissold Road, Clissold Crescent, Burma Road and Aden Grove, Albion Road and Albion Grove, Milton Grove and Shakspeare Walk, across to Stoke Newington Church Street and up Lordship Road and Grazebrook Road towards the Stamford Hill end. If you can see the park railings or the West Reservoir, you are well inside our patch.
Where will the van park when you come to my flat?
South of Church Street it is zone M, controlled on weekdays until 6.30pm and on Saturday mornings, and the roads nearest the park fill early. We take a paid bay or use a visitor permit if you have one spare, pull up as close as we can and run the line in from the kerb. Outside the controlled hours we park wherever there is room.
Can you clean a whole house of carpets in one visit before a festival?
Yes, and around Lordship Road it is one of our regular jobs. We book a longer slot and work room by room from the top of the house down, staging the drying so the house is back in order by the date you need. Calling a week or so ahead gives us the best chance of the day you want.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Clissold conversion flat?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because hot-water extraction pulls the bulk of the moisture straight back out. Thick wool over the original boards, or a cold, still flat in one of the split houses, can take a little longer, so we leave the air moving and tell you what to expect before we pack up.
Does a top-floor flat in a three-storey house cost more?
No. We price by the room, so a bedroom on the third floor costs the same £36 as one at street level, and carrying the machine up is part of the job. The stairs are only charged if you want them cleaned, from £41 a flight. In a shared house the hall and stair carpet often belongs to the freeholder, so check who pays for it before we add it to the quote.
I am moving out of a rented flat on Albion Road. Can you give me a receipt for the deposit?
Yes. A third of households here rent privately, and the end-of-tenancy clean is one of our most common bookings in N16. You get a dated receipt listing every room we cleaned, which is what most agents and inventory clerks ask to see. Book it a day before you hand the keys back if you can; carpets need up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, and that leaves a comfortable margin at the check-out.
Each clean is covered by our re-clean guarantee, so if a mark we treated comes back, we come back too and deal with it free. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Clissold and the wider N16 since 2009.
