Plantation Wharf stands on the site of a former sugar refinery on the Thames, and names like Molasses House and Cotton Row come from the old river trades. Today the wharf is warehouse-style flats, and most have carpeted bedrooms and a wool rug in the open-plan living space. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Clove Hitch Quay, SW11, since 2009, with prices from £36 a room and drying times of 6 to 7 hours.

Wharf names from the sugar trade
Clove Hitch Quay is the riverside road through Plantation Wharf, a development on the south bank between Wandsworth Bridge and the Battersea railway bridge. Almost everything here is a flat, and the blocks carry the old trade names of the site: Calico House and Ivory House sit right on the water, Molasses House a little behind, and Trade Tower stands at the centre, a building many people say looks like a water tower. The apartments tend to be open-plan, many with a mezzanine and a glazed balcony over the river.
Inside, the pattern is consistent: wood or tile through the living space, fitted carpet in the bedrooms and on any mezzanine stair, and a wool rug pulling the open-plan area together. The nearest station is Clapham Junction, about a twelve-minute walk, with Wandsworth Town a little under a mile the other way. The river bus stops right here too, at the pier once called Plantation Wharf and now named St Mary’s Wandsworth, which has step-free access from the street.
Can the van get onto the wharf?
Not onto the public road outside, as a rule. York Road behind the wharf is a priority red route, and unloading there is not allowed. The surrounding streets on both sides of York Road are in Wandsworth’s B9 sub-zone, which is reserved for permit holders only from 10am to 11am on weekdays; outside that hour the bays are easier, but read the signs before relying on that. Plantation Wharf itself is a private development with its own parking and access, so tell your concierge or managing agent the date, and we can bring the van in where the estate allows.
From the van, the equipment goes in by the service route and up in the lift, with covers over any shared carpet. Inside the flat, roll up anything delicate on the wood floor near the bedroom doors, and move bags and shoes off the mezzanine stair. A balcony door we can open while we work helps the drying from the start.
How the census sees the river flats
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Purpose-built flats | 79.2% |
| One bedroom | 28.9% |
| Two bedrooms | 44.1% |
| Rented privately | 41.1% |
| Shared ownership | 5.3% |
| Heated by electricity only | 34.0% |
The census area here is St Mary’s & Cotton Row, named partly after the street at the back of the wharf, and it stretches east along the river to Battersea Square. Purpose-built flats make up 79.2% of homes. Two bedrooms is the usual size (44.1%), with one-bed flats next at 28.9%.
That makes a typical booking small and quick. With the living area on wood, many wharf flats only need the two bedrooms done, which is £72; if the living room is carpeted as well, a two-bed flat comes to £115. Renting is common, at 41.1% of households, and 5.3% own through shared ownership, so end-of-tenancy and pre-sale cleans come up through the year.
Heating matters for drying. Electric-only heating covers 34.0% of homes here, and a flat with the windows shut and little airflow by the water can run longer than usual. The open balcony door does more than any heater here.

Pale bedroom carpet and river-view sofas
The jobs follow the layout. Bedroom and hall carpets in these flats are usually pale, so the work is lifting the marks of daily life, like a wine spill after guests or traffic greying the hall. Sofas fill the other half of the diary, linen and leather both, since open-plan living puts the seating on show. We hot-water-extract carpets and rugs, and clean and condition leather with no soaking.
One limit, said plainly at the start. An old coffee or wine mark that has been scrubbed and left to dry into a pale carpet can fade to a faint shadow without vanishing, and we will tell you on sight if yours looks like that kind, before we start.

One van for the whole flat
The same van handles all of it. Our hot-water carpet cleaning suits the bedroom and stair carpets in these flats, and our sofa and upholstery cleaning covers the linen and leather pieces facing the river view. The wool rug in the open-plan area is cleaned where it lies through specialist rug cleaning, with you clearing the floor first and the light furniture moved for you. The rest of Wandsworth pays the same fixed prices, and we cross the water to the Chelsea side too, including World’s End and West Brompton.
Clove Hitch Quay questions
Do you cover all of Plantation Wharf and the wider SW11 riverside?
Yes. We clean every block on Clove Hitch Quay, including Calico House, Ivory House, Molasses House and Trade Tower, and the surrounding SW11 streets off York Road and Lombard Road. If you are along the river towards Wandsworth Bridge or back towards Battersea, send the postcode and we will confirm the slot.
How do you park and get in at a gated riverside development like this?
The wharf has its own parking and access, so it is not a street-permit job like much of Battersea. Let us know your block, and we arrange access with the concierge or managing agent on the day, then bring the gear in by the service route to keep it off the courtyard.
Can you clean a big wool rug in an open-plan flat without making a mess of the floor?
Yes. We clean the rug where it lies during the visit. It is vacuumed, stains and traffic marks are pre-treated, then it is shampooed and rinsed by hot-water extraction, the same machines we use on fitted carpet. You clear the floor and we move any light furniture. For a very old or delicate rug, send us a photo first and we will say whether it can be cleaned safely on site.
Will the carpet really be dry within 6 to 7 hours up here by the water?
Most carpets dry within that window, but a riverside flat with the windows shut and little airflow can run longer, especially a thicker bedroom carpet. We leave it as dry as the machine allows; crack a window or the balcony door, which on this stretch of the Thames makes a real difference.
My flat has a mezzanine. Can you clean the carpet up there?
Yes. A carpeted mezzanine floor is priced like a bedroom, from £36, and a carpeted open stair up to it as a flight, from £41. Clear the steps of books and plants, because many mezzanine stairs are steep and open-sided, and we carry the hose up by hand.
The sun through the river windows has dried out my leather sofa. Can you help?
Often, yes. We clean the hide and then condition it, which puts moisture back into dry, stiff leather and softens the creases. What a clean cannot do is bring back colour the sun has already faded, so a sofa that has gone pale on the window side stays paler there. We will show you which parts will improve before we start.
If anything we treated is not right, we return under our re-clean guarantee and fix it free. Our people are DBS-checked and we hold full insurance; the riverside between the bridges has been on our books since 2009.
