Mendelssohn wrote his Spring Song in 1842 at Dane House on Denmark Hill, and a sundial in Ruskin Park marks the spot. London Carpet Cleaning works across this College corner of SE5, from the streets around King’s College Hospital down to the big Victorian houses above Herne Hill. Rooms cost from £36, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Between the hospital and Ruskin Park

This page covers the Lambeth side of Denmark Hill, where King’s College Hospital has stood since 1913; it has 950 beds today. West and south of it is Ruskin Park, 36 acres opened on 2 February 1907 after local people campaigned for it. The park is named after John Ruskin, who lived nearby from 1823 to 1871, and it still has its bandstand, bowling green and oval duck pond, along with the old entrance porch of one of the demolished houses, now Grade II listed.

Those houses were the first generation. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, wealthy families built big villas along Denmark Hill and Herne Hill for the clean air. When the leases fell in, many were replaced with smaller houses, such as the early 20th-century houses of the Sanders Estate on Herne Hill. Ferndene Road has large semi-detached houses looking over the park, and the streets towards Herne Hill Road are mostly Victorian family homes, many of them since divided into flats.

Across Denmark Hill the boundary changes. Denmark Hill station, Charles Henry Driver’s Italianate building of 1865 with its French pavilion roofs, is in Southwark, as are Camberwell Grove and Grove Lane, where the first four houses (79 to 85, Grade II listed) went up in the 1770s. We clean on both sides of the road. The station is in zone 2, with Southeastern and Thameslink trains and the Windrush line, so plenty of the flats here belong to commuters and hospital staff.

Where does the van go near King’s College Hospital?

Lambeth’s parking order puts the streets west of Denmark Hill in the Herne Hill zone, N. It lists Ferndene Road, Finsen Road, Kemerton Road, Deepdene Road and Bicknell Road, the west side of Denmark Hill from Ferndene Road down to Herne Hill, and Herne Hill Road south of the railway bridge. The hours are on the plate at each entry to the zone, so we check it on arrival and pay for a bay or use your visitor permit.

The hospital is the big factor. With 950 beds, it brings staff and visitors all day, so expect the bays nearest Denmark Hill to be busy. We carry a long hose and work from the nearest legal space. On Herne Hill Road the railway bridges also break up the street, so the van may sit on the far side of one and we walk the kit under it.

Inside, the houses are tall. Three floors and a long straight flight are normal, and in a converted house your flat may be at the top of a shared stair. Clear the landings and tell us which flights are carpeted, and we can plan how long the job will take before we arrive.

The census has no area called College, so these figures come from Herne Hill East, which takes in King’s College Hospital, Ruskin Park and the streets between Denmark Hill and Herne Hill Road. It is old housing: 63.2% of homes were built before 1900. Nearly a quarter (23.5%) have four or more bedrooms, and 11.0% are semi-detached houses, the kind of family home with carpet on two or three floors and a long run of stairs.

The other side of those big houses is the conversions. 28.6% of homes are flats carved out of a house, and 31.0% are rented privately, so we split our time between owners who have lived here for years (14.7% own outright) and tenants handing back a flat at the end of a lease. In the period houses the carpet is often wool on the stairs and landings, laid over old boards; in the flats it is usually a newer synthetic that needs a fresh look for the next tenant. For a three-bed Victorian terrace off Herne Hill Road, cleaning three bedrooms, the lounge and one flight totals £192.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Lambeth 014) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Wool stairs, fabric sofas and front-room rugs

Carpets and stairs get hot-water extraction (see steam carpet cleaning), which rinses the grit out and leaves the pile dry within 6 to 7 hours. Wool holds water, so we run it slightly drier and lift the pile properly afterwards. Sofas and armchairs are handled as fabric upholstery cleaning, matched to the fabric so a wine mark on a grey sofa lifts without leaving a ring. Rugs, including wool and the colourful pieces people keep in these front rooms, are cleaned in the room through our rug cleaning service. The Lambeth page covers the rest of the borough, and we also work in neighbouring Denmark Hill and Camberwell.

We see plenty of red wine on sofas and pet accidents on living-room rugs, and most of it comes out fully. The limit is on the oldest stair carpet, where decades of feet have worn the wool flat in the middle of each tread. A clean lifts colour and smell there but cannot rebuild a pile that has gone, and you will hear from us at the door whether yours is worth cleaning or close to replacing, before you have paid anything.

What people near Ruskin Park ask

Which College streets do you cover, from the hospital to Herne Hill?

All of this corner of SE5 and the SE24 streets beside it: Ferndene Road, Finsen Road, Kemerton Road and the other roads around Ruskin Park, the houses round King’s College Hospital, and Herne Hill Road. Across Denmark Hill we also cover Camberwell Grove, Grove Lane and the streets towards Denmark Hill station and Camberwell Green in Southwark.

Where will the van park on these Victorian streets?

Most of the roads west of Denmark Hill are in Lambeth’s Herne Hill controlled parking zone, and all of the parking is on the street, with almost no drives. We carry a long hose and work from wherever we can stop nearby, so a space right at the door is not needed. A note of your road on booking helps us plan the approach.

Do you clean wool carpet in the period houses?

Yes, and a good share of the carpet here is wool or a wool blend on stairs and landings. We clean it on a lower moisture setting and groom the pile afterwards, which protects the fibre and shortens drying. Old wool comes up far brighter once the trodden-in grit at the centre of each tread is rinsed out.

How long will stairs in a tall house by Ruskin Park take to dry?

Expect 6 to 7 hours to dry, since the machine draws most of the water straight back out. Thick wool, a cold flat or a damp day can stretch that, so on heavily soiled stairs that run the full height of the house, we suggest staying off them overnight. We leave the room ventilated and tell you if a carpet will run longer.

What does a whole four-bedroom house cost?

Count the rooms. Four bedrooms, a living room and one flight of stairs come to £228, and a second flight adds £41. Nearly a quarter of homes in this census area have four or more bedrooms, so we quote this often. If you have a through-lounge, that is £61 in place of the living room price, and a sofa can be added on the same visit.

Will mud from Ruskin Park come out of a pale carpet?

Fresh mud, yes. Let it dry fully, vacuum off what you can, and we pre-treat the rest before the rinse. The clay soil of a park tends to leave a brown tide mark when someone scrubs it wet, and that is harder to shift than the mud itself. If a child or dog has walked a trail across the hall, book the hall and stairs together and we treat the whole route.

Every job carries our re-clean guarantee, so if a treated mark shows again, the second visit costs you nothing. Each cleaner is DBS-checked and the business is fully insured; we have worked across this part of Lambeth and neighbouring Camberwell since 2009.

What our customers say in College.

Front room carpet cleaned before my daughter's naming ceremony when we had the whole family round. A red wine stain from the night before came out completely. So pleased, and such a polite man.

Grey fabric sofa cleaned after a dinner party where someone tipped a glass of red. Came up like new and the price was fair for the size. Friendly, quick and left everything tidy.

Stairs and landing cleaned before we put the flat up for sale. They look so much brighter and the photographer said everything looked fresh. Well worth doing and he was careful with the banister.

Cleaned the bedrooms and the hall in our flat. Much fresher than before and a coffee spill in the spare room lifted out. The drying took a fair bit longer than he first said so we stayed off it overnight, but the job was good and he was friendly.
