Colliers Wood station opened in 1926 on the corner of the High Street and Christchurch Road, on the spot where a toll gate once gave the area its old name, Single Gate. Around it are late Victorian and Edwardian terraces, grander semis on Warren Road and the flats of Britannia Point. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned Colliers Wood, SW19, since 2009, from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From Stane Street to a 1960s tower
The A24 through Colliers Wood, the High Street and its continuation as Merton High Street, roughly follows the line of Stane Street, the Roman road. Early maps show market gardens and orchards either side, with mills along the River Wandle; by 1768 Connolly’s corn mill was working, with a copper mill on the south side of Merton High Street. Connolly’s Mill survives and has been converted into homes, and many of the old millworkers’ cottages along Wandle Bank are still lived in.
Most of Colliers Wood is late Victorian and Edwardian terrace, set on the side roads that run off the High Street. Warren Road has the grander four and five-bed Edwardian semis with bay windows and high ceilings. Then there is the tower. Built in 1966 as offices, it was stripped back from 2014 and re-clad in glass, and by October 2017 it had reopened as Britannia Point, about 150 rented apartments over shops. So a single round on Boundary Road or Cavendish Road might take in a wool stair runner in a period house and a builder-grade flat carpet two doors down.
Wandle Park is the green space most people here use. The Wimbledon Corporation bought the grounds of the old Wandlebank House for a public park, it opened in 1907 under the care of the National Trust, and the Mill Pond Garden was added in 1910.
Colliers Wood homes in figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Built before 1919 | 49.1% |
| Built 2000 or later | 20.4% |
| Flats in converted houses | 22.3% |
| Rented privately | 43.9% |
| Shared ownership | 4.5% |
| Heated by electricity only | 20.3% |
Half the homes here (49.1%) are older than 1919, and a fifth (20.4%) were built in 2000 or later. The middle decades barely register. Private renting is high, 43.9% of households, the highest share of any tenure here, so we clean a great many flats between tenancies, from two-bed conversions to new-build apartments with a check-out date already set. Another 4.5% of households are in shared ownership.
The converted houses (22.3% of homes are flats in them) bring shared halls and stairs, and the newer flats bring electric heating: 20.3% of homes have no other kind. In those flats we leave the carpet as dry as the machine can get it and suggest a window open for an hour. A Victorian terrace with three bedrooms, the living room and the stairs comes to £192.

Parking near the High Street
Much of Colliers Wood is inside Merton’s controlled parking zones, and the rules change from one zone to the next. The main CW zone runs Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, so Saturdays are uncontrolled there. CW1 runs Monday to Saturday over the same hours, while CW5, a permit-only zone, runs Monday to Saturday until 9pm. CW4, also permit-only, adds weekend controls from 11am to 3pm.
It is rarely an obstacle: we carry a long hose and work from the bay nearest your door, or from a visitor permit if you have one. The High Street itself is the A24, so for a flat above a shop or in one of the new blocks we unload on a side road and carry the kit in. In a block, tell us about the lift and any booking needed for the loading bay. In a conversion, clear the shared hall, because the stair carpet there is usually where we start.
Wandle grit and pet marks
Two patterns come up again and again. The first is the river and the green space around it: homes near Wandle Park and Merton Abbey Mills pick up real mud and grit through autumn and winter, and that abrasive grit is what wears a carpet pile flat over time. The second is pets and young families, which is most of what we treat on bedroom and living-room carpets. We get a lot of leather and fabric sofas too, from the retail parks and from years of family use.
Ballpoint and felt-tip ink on leather, like the biro a customer’s son left on a cushion, we can usually lighten and feed the hide back, but a faint shadow can remain, and we tell you that before we start.

How we clean in Colliers Wood
The core job is hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the grit and detergent back out of the pile and leaves it dry within 6 to 7 hours. We clean sofas and armchairs in the home with upholstery cleaning matched to the fabric or leather, and we clean rugs in the home with proper rug cleaning when a wool piece needs a deeper pre-treat and rinse, and we ask for a photo first of anything delicate. For the rest of Merton and its neighbouring areas, or nearby in Pollards Hill and Norbury, the same prices and the same van apply.
Colliers Wood, your questions
Which Colliers Wood streets do you cover, from Christchurch Road to Warren Road?
All of the SW19 side of Colliers Wood and the streets around the High Street, from Christchurch Road and Marlborough Road over to Cavendish Road, Warren Road and Boundary Road, plus the flats near the station and in Britannia Point. We also reach into the neighbouring SW17 and CR4 streets, so give us the postcode when you book.
Is parking a problem for the van in the Colliers Wood parking zone?
Rarely. Much of Colliers Wood sits inside Merton’s CW zones, so side streets off the High Street are permit or pay-and-display by day, and the main CW zone runs on weekdays only. We carry a long hose and work off the bay nearest your door, or off a visitor permit if you have one. Tell us your road when you book.
Can you get rid of cat and pet smell in a flat?
Usually, yes. The bedroom-carpet pet smell we are often called for, like a flat where the previous tenants kept a cat, comes from urine that has soaked into the backing and underlay. We treat it down at that level with an enzyme, then extract, so the room smells clean and the odour is not just masked.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Colliers Wood period house?
Most carpets here are dry within 6 to 7 hours, longer for a dense wool stair runner in a period house or a cold ground-floor flat in winter. We extract as much moisture as the machine will pull, so you are not left with a soaked floor. Open a window or two and a morning clean is usually dry by the evening.
Do you clean flats in Britannia Point and the other new blocks?
Yes. Britannia Point alone has about 150 rented apartments. We bring the machine up in the lift and protect the corridor on the way, then clean the flat to a standard a letting agent will accept. Let us know the floor and any building rules on contractors when you book.
I let a flat here. Can you clean between tenants?
Yes, and we do it often in Colliers Wood, where 43.9% of homes are privately rented. Give us the empty date and the room count; we clean once the old tenant has gone and before the new one arrives, and email you a dated receipt for the inventory file.
Every job carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated spot is not right, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned for Colliers Wood households since 2009.
