Coppetts Road carries on north from Tetherdown past Page’s Lane, and where the two meet stands a row of modest Victorian cottages older than most of the houses around them. Further up, an isolation hospital served the area from 1887 until 2008. London Carpet Cleaning has worked across Coppetts, N10, since 2009. Prices run from £36 a room, and carpets take up to 6 to 7 hours to dry.

Farm, cottages and the Edwardian boom
Coppetts sits on the western edge of Haringey, where Muswell Hill runs into Friern Barnet and New Southgate, with Coppetts Wood and the Scrublands just over the Barnet boundary. The name is old: Coppetts Farm already appears on the early maps, when this was open country with a few big estates. At the junction of Coppetts Road and Page’s Lane, a locally listed group of small red-brick terraces and yellow-brick semis went up early in the second half of the nineteenth century, before the suburb arrived.
Most of the housing came in one push between 1896 and 1914, the Edmondson and Collins building boom, so the typical job is a bay-fronted Edwardian semi or terrace with deep skirting, the odd tiled hearth and original stained glass still in the front door. Coppetts Road itself is the spine, running past the playing fields, and the same period stock lines Pages Lane, Sydney Road, Albert Road and Wilton Road. Mixed in now are newer gated infills, the Oak Grove town houses among them, with pale modern carpet in place of the older wool. There is no station in Coppetts; Arnos Grove on the Piccadilly line is the nearest tube, New Southgate the closest rail, and the rest is buses along Colney Hatch Lane and Muswell Hill Broadway.
From isolation hospital to new homes
For more than a century Coppetts Road had a hospital most locals never went into. The Hornsey Local Board of Health opened the Coppetts Wood isolation hospital in 1887 for infectious patients from the Hornsey area, and it went on to treat tuberculosis and, later, Lassa fever. Most services moved to the Royal Free in 2000, the last high-security beds followed in 2008, and the final buildings were demolished in 2019. Peabody is now building 80 homes on the site, more than half of them affordable, including family-sized homes. New homes mean move-in cleans, and builders’ dust that settles into new carpet in the first months.
Coppetts in census figures
| Homes | Share |
|---|---|
| In purpose-built blocks of flats | 27.3% |
| Semi-detached houses | 13.1% |
| Owned outright | 26.1% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 7.2% |
| With one bedroom | 23.1% |
| With two bedrooms | 32.0% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 19.4% |
The census area here is Muswell Hill North, which runs from Coppetts Road over to Colney Hatch Lane. It is a settled, owner-run place. Over a quarter of households (26.1%) own outright, and only 7.2% rent from the council or a housing association. Alongside the Edwardian houses there is a sizeable inter-war layer, with 19.4% of homes built between 1919 and 1944, and 13.1% of all homes are semi-detached.
Flats matter here too. Some 27.3% of homes are in purpose-built blocks, and more than half of all homes have one or two bedrooms (23.1% and 32.0%), many of them flats made from the bigger houses. The family houses are where the bigger bills come: a three-bedroom Edwardian semi with a through-lounge and one flight of stairs comes to £210.

Midday zones and roads towards the woods
Parking around Coppetts is easy by London standards. The Muswell Hill zone only applies from 11am to 1pm, seven days a week, and the Fortis Green zone from 11am to 1pm on weekdays; many of the roads towards the woods are unrestricted anyway. The Edwardian houses rarely have a drive, but there is usually kerb space close by, so we park near the door and run the hose in. In the gated infills, tell us the gate code or ask whoever manages the site to expect a van.
Inside, clear the hall of buggies and scooters before we come and we start straight away; we work from the top landing down so nobody treads on a damp stair.
Buggy lanes, mud and bay-window fade
The recurring job in Coppetts is the high-traffic lane wearing grey before the rest of the carpet does. In the Edwardian houses that means hall runners taking a battering from buggies in and out, and staircases going grey straight down the centre while the edges stay fine. We lift that with a hot-water extraction pass and careful edge work round all that deep skirting. Pets, school-run mud off the playing fields and the woods, and the odd old coffee ring on a sofa arm make up most of the rest.
A dark patch right under a bay window, usually old sun-fade or a spill that has been walked and set for years, will lighten and even out but does not always vanish completely. We tell you on the day what is dirt and what is permanent.

Carpet, sofa and rug cleaning on the N10 edge
Our main work here is hot-water carpet cleaning, the deep extraction method that suits old wool and newer synthetics alike. We also clean sofas and armchairs in the home with fabric upholstery cleaning, and we clean rugs in the home through specialist rug cleaning, leaving them fresher than we found them. If your place is in a neighbouring patch, we cover Colney Hatch and Friern Barnet too, and the rest of Haringey on the same fixed prices.
Coppetts customers often ask
Which postcodes do you cover around Coppetts Road and Colney Hatch Lane?
Coppetts falls in N10, on the Muswell Hill side of Haringey, and we cover all of it along with the N11 streets next door around Colney Hatch Lane. Coppetts Road, Pages Lane, Sydney Road, Albert Road and Wilton Road are all well inside our usual round, as are newer infills like the Oak Grove town houses, so there is no travel charge to reach you.
Is parking a problem for the van on the Coppetts streets?
Rarely. The Muswell Hill zone only bites for a short window, every day from 11am to 1pm, and many of the residential roads towards the woods are unrestricted. The Edwardian houses rarely have a drive, but there is usually kerb space close by, so we park near the door and run the hose in.
Can you get a buggy-worn hallway looking even again?
Usually, yes. A hall that the pushchair has dragged grey, the classic Coppetts Road problem, responds well to a pre-spray and hot-water extraction that pulls the ground-in grit out of the pile. Where the traffic lane has worn the fibre thin as well as dirtied it, it will come up much cleaner and far more even, though worn pile cannot be put back.
How long until carpets are dry in a Coppetts Edwardian house?
Most carpets here are dry within 6 to 7 hours, helped by the strong extraction we finish each room with. Heavy wool, a thick stair runner in an Edwardian hall or a still, cold day will sit at the longer end. Open a window or leave the heating ticking over and you can walk on everything the same evening.
Will you clean in the new homes on the old hospital site?
Yes. New-build carpet often holds fine plaster and sanding dust from the last weeks of construction, and a hot-water clean soon after you move in lifts it before it greys the pile. Tell us the block or house and how visitors get in, and we will plan the parking with you.
Our road backs onto the woods. What does that do to the carpet?
Mostly it brings in mud and leaf litter, especially in autumn. Wet leaves can leave brown tannin marks on a pale carpet, and fine mud works down into the pile at the back door and up the stairs. Both lift well if they are treated within a few weeks; leave a doormat both sides of the back door and we do the rest.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a patch does not come up the way we both expected, we come back and go over it again at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Coppetts and the wider Muswell Hill area since 2009.
