What Cordwainer homes are like
Cordwainer is one of the smallest of the City’s ancient wards, an almost rectangular block bounded by Cheapside to the north, Bread Street to the west, Cannon Street to the south and Walbrook to the east. Queen Street runs north to south straight through the middle of it. The ward is named after the cordwainers, the fine leather shoemakers who once worked here, and a bronze statue of one, raised on Watling Street in 2002, still marks the trade. On Bow Lane and around it we are usually lifting spills that have set into a lounge or hallway carpet, a coffee ring by the desk, a juice spill on a fabric settee cushion before people come round.
