Deptford station opened in February 1836 and is the oldest in London still in use, and the streets around it pack almost every kind of London home into one postcode, from Victorian conversions off Tanners Hill to new flats by the Creek in pale greige carpet. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned them all since 2009, from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

One postcode, every kind of home

The older streets off Tanners Hill and the High Street are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, plenty of them split into flats, and Albury Street, laid out between 1705 and 1715 behind Thomas Archer’s St Paul’s, holds one of the very few early-Georgian terraces left in London. A short walk south, the St John’s conservation area, designated in 1976, keeps its Victorian terraces around the church. Then the picture flips: 1960s and 70s blocks, the riverside Pepys Estate on the old naval victualling yard, and a wave of new-build flats towards Convoys Wharf and Deptford Bridge.

That mix sets the carpet work. The conversions near the station turn over with tenants, so we see a lot of synthetic carpet and end-of-tenancy jobs. The new flats come with pale greige carpet that shows every mark, and the period houses on Reginald Road and around keep wool and original staircases. In one week we might clean three let bedrooms on the High Street and a wool stair in a conservation-area house.

Deptford Bridge sits at the southern edge of SE8, where the High Street meets the A2. Its DLR station opened in 1999 on the extension to Lewisham, raised above the roads and Deptford Creek, next to Lewisham College and the market. The homes round it lean towards newer flats and converted blocks, so the recurring work there is greige new-build carpet and tenant move-outs, on the same fixed prices as the rest of Deptford.

Flats in purpose-built blocks71.7%
Terraced houses12.7%
Socially rented42.9%
Rented privately31.3%

The census area that covers central Deptford is called New Cross and Deptford South. Its biggest building period in the VOA count is 1973 to 1999, at 33.3%, and 71.7% of homes are flats in purpose-built blocks. Renting is the norm: 42.9% of households rent from the council or a housing association and another 31.3% from a private landlord, which is the reason end-of-tenancy work never stops here.

Two bedrooms is the commonest size (37.6%), but the terraces are where the long jobs are. Terraced houses make up 12.7% of homes, and those are the ones with stairs, landings and wool. For one of the terraces off Tanners Hill, three bedrooms, a living room and a flight of stairs come to £192. The figures also show 3.9% of homes without central heating, so in a cold flat we leave the pile as dry as the machine allows and ask you to keep a window open for the afternoon.

Red routes, permit bays and market closures

Much of SE8 now sits in a controlled zone. Lewisham started enforcing its Sustainable Streets zone for Deptford (DP) on 13 May 2024, controlled Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and the Deptford Central zone (S) also covers Saturday mornings until 1.30pm. When the van cannot sit close we plan a long hose run from a permit bay, or you set up a visitor permit for the morning.

The main roads are tighter. The A2, which runs through Deptford Broadway and Deptford Bridge, is one of Lewisham’s red routes, managed by TfL, so the van cannot stop on it to unload; for a flat on the Broadway we use the nearest side street. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the High Street is closed to traffic for the market from 6am to 7pm. In the towers and riverside blocks we ask about lifts and fobs before the day, and we bring the kit up in one trip.

End-of-tenancy work and the curry stain

The job we are asked about most in SE8 is the end-of-tenancy clean. With so many flat shares and conversions around Evelyn Street and Childers Street, a synthetic carpet often needs handing back fresh and fast with a dated receipt the agent and inventory clerk will accept. Food and drink are the next pattern: a dropped takeaway curry, candle wax after a power cut, an old tea stain in a mattress. We pre-treat and lift the bulk of those, and most lift clean.

A turmeric or curry mark on a pale carpet is one of the hardest stains there is, because the dye bonds into the fibre and does not sit on top. We get the great majority out and will often surprise you, but a deep yellow patch on a near-white pile we can sometimes only lighten, and we say that at the door.

Hot-water extraction, upholstery and rugs

We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, which pulls the grit out of the base of the pile, and we match the water to the fibre so the wool in the period homes is cleaned low-moisture while a tougher synthetic let carpet takes a deeper hot rinse. We also clean sofas and armchairs, do wool rugs in the home with proper rug cleaning, asking for a photo first on silk, and freshen mattresses. For the rest of the borough, see our Lewisham carpet cleaning page, and we also cover next-door Evelyn.

Deptford bookings, answered

Do you cover all of Deptford, from Tanners Hill to the Pepys Estate?

Yes, the whole of SE8, from the High Street and Evelyn Street down to the Creek and the Pepys Estate, and out to Deptford Bridge. We have cleaned this corner of Lewisham since 2009, so the team knows the conversions off Tanners Hill and the estate access. Wherever you are in SE8, there is no call-out charge.

Can you get an end-of-tenancy carpet past a strict agent?

That is the job we do most in Deptford. We clean the carpet by hot-water extraction so it goes back fresh, with the grit lifted out of the base of the pile, and we give you a dated receipt that names the work for the inventory check. Book it for the day before your check-out and the carpet is dry in time.

How do you manage parking and access on the estates?

We plan it when you book. Much of SE8 is inside a Lewisham parking zone, and the towers and riverside blocks can mean a walk from the nearest bay, so we bring a long hose and carry the kit up where the van cannot get close. Tell us your road or block on the call and we sort it before the day.

How long does carpet in a new Deptford riverside flat take to dry?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract the water and leave little in the pile. The pale greige carpet in the new riverside flats and the wool on Reginald Road are both cleaned with less moisture, so they dry evenly. With a window open or the radiators ticking over, a morning clean gives you the room back by the evening.

Can you get candle wax out of a carpet?

Usually, yes. We lift the wax itself with gentle heat and absorbent paper, a little at a time, then clean the area by extraction to take out the oily residue. Plain white wax goes completely. A coloured candle can leave a tint of its dye in a pale carpet, which we treat separately and can usually fade a long way.

Can you clean just our rooms and the shared hall in a flat share?

Yes. We price by the room, so a flat share can book just the bedrooms that need doing plus the hall or stairs, and leave the rest. With almost a third of households here renting privately, it is a common booking, especially at the end of a tenancy when everyone moves out at once.

Our re-clean guarantee applies to every Deptford job, so a spot that reappears gets a free return visit. We carry full insurance, every cleaner is DBS-checked, and we have worked across SE8 since 2009.

★★★★★
Moving out of my flat share and the landlord was being funny about the deposit over the carpets. Got these in to do all three bedrooms and the agent had nothing to say. Got my full deposit back, cheers lads.

Curry stain on the bedroom carpet from a takeaway I dropped, my own fault entirely. Thought turmeric was impossible to get out but they managed it. Polite and quick, in and out within the hour.

Got my mattress cleaned before a friend came to stay on it. There was an old tea stain bothering me and a bit of a smell. Both gone now and it dried quicker than I expected. Really good value.

Lovely job on a shaggy rug from my living room that had got matted and grubby. Fluffed right back up. The guy was friendly and explained what he was doing, which I appreciated.

My little one trod felt tip pen all through the living room carpet while I was cooking. I was dreading it but they got every mark out and the carpet looks brand new. Kind man, took his shoes off at the door.

My daughter had a bedwetting phase and the mattress needed proper sorting. They cleaned and deodorised it and it came out fresh with no staining. Reassuring to know it was done properly.
