Henry VIII began Nonsuch Palace here in 1538, and the park that replaced it still fills the northern side of East Ewell, with 1930s houses on generous plots running south towards Cheam Road and Reigate Road. London Carpet Cleaning covers East Ewell, SM2, on its Sutton round, as it has since 2009. Each room is priced from £36, and the carpet is dry again within 6 to 7 hours.

A Surrey suburb on the Sutton boundary

East Ewell is in Surrey, in the borough of Epsom and Ewell, and it sits right against the London Borough of Sutton. The houses nearest Cheam carry SM2 postcodes even though the council is Epsom and Ewell. The area lies east of the A24 Ewell bypass, and most of it was built in the 1930s.

Nonsuch Park is the big open space on the doorstep. Four councils bought it in 1937 to save it from the builders, and Epsom and Ewell and Sutton still run it together through a joint committee. The site of the palace and the ruins of the old Cuddington church are inside it, and Warren Farm nature reserve runs alongside, with Priest Hill reserve near the A240. Ewell East station opened in 1847 on the Croydon and Epsom Railway, and its ticket office is reached from Cheam Road; it has been in London fare zone 6 since January 2008, with trains to London Victoria and London Bridge one way and to Dorking and Horsham the other.

The roads are leafy and generously laid out, with drives in front and long, level gardens behind; the playwright Michael Frayn grew up in one of them, Hillside Road, off Queensmead Avenue. The 1930s houses carry a lot of wool and wool-blend carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms.

More detached houses than the reputation suggests

East Ewell is usually described as a suburb of 1930s semis, and the build dates bear out the decade: 38.1% of homes went up between the wars, more than any other period. The house type is different. Around Ewell East station, in the census area that covers the Nonsuch ward, 58.0% of homes are detached and only 14.7% are semi-detached. The 2011 census told the same story for Nonsuch ward, with detached houses far ahead of every other type.

For a carpet clean that means big houses with big floors. Almost half the homes (49.1%) have four or more bedrooms, so a whole-house booking runs to four or five carpeted rooms upstairs as well as the stairs, and we plan it as a morning’s work. Another 25.8% date from 1945 to 1972, and 15.0% have been built since 2000; in those newer homes the carpet is more often synthetic, and it takes a hotter rinse than the wool in the older houses.

Three bedrooms, the front room and the staircase of one of the 1930s semis add up to £192. Only 0.8% of homes lack central heating, so leave the radiators on low and the bedrooms are back in use by the evening.

Old wool, park mud and the upstairs rooms

The original 1930s houses mean a lot of wool and wool-blend carpet, the kind that holds traffic marks but cleans up well when it is treated properly. We get a steady run of upstairs jobs: whole landings and bedrooms that have not been touched in years, often before a relative moves in or a room changes hands. Mud is the other constant, walked in off the park and the verges and ground into hallway runners over a wet winter. We lift candle wax and felt-tip regularly, and on a 1930s stair carpet those usually come out in full.

The limit is shading and pile crush on a wool stair that has carried decades of footfall on the same treads. We can clean it back to a true, even colour, but the flattening worn into the nose of each step is wear in the fibre, and a clean does not plump it back out. We point that out on the stairs before we start.

Parking, drives and park days

Most East Ewell houses have their own drive, so the van goes on the drive or at the kerb outside and the hose runs a few metres to the door. Epsom and Ewell’s residents’ parking zones are small pockets in Epsom town centre and Ewell village, around streets such as Church Street and Mill Lane; the council’s published list has none on the East Ewell side.

The busiest roads are the main ones. Cheam Road and Reigate Road carry steady traffic, and Reigate Road also has North East Surrey College of Technology, reached from the station by a footpath. If you live on either main road, we park in the nearest side road and walk the kit round. A 5km parkrun takes place in Nonsuch Park every Saturday morning, so for the roads by the park gates a weekday slot is easier. Clear the hall, lift anything stored under the beds and take shoes off the stairs before we arrive, and the job starts on time.

Sofas, rugs and the dog’s chair

The core job is hot-water extraction, what most people call steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the detergent and soil back out so the pile dries soft and never crunchy. We bring the same machine to sofas and armchairs through our upholstery cleaning, useful on the corner units and dog-used seating we see a lot of out here. Loose wool runners and hall rugs get rug cleaning where they lie, shampooed and rinsed with that same machine during the visit. If you are over towards Cheam or the rest of Sutton, the same crew covers it: see Belmont, South Cheam, or the rest of Sutton.

East Ewell bookings: the usual questions

Do you cover East Ewell even though it is in Surrey?

Yes. East Ewell is just over the boundary from Sutton, and we treat it as part of our Sutton round. We work the SM2 streets nearest Cheam most, but we cover the whole of East Ewell and its KT17 roads the same way, at the same fixed prices.

Where do you park on the East Ewell roads?

Usually on your drive or right outside. There is no residents’ parking zone on the East Ewell side, and nearly every house has a drive, so the van sits close. We run the hoses neatly from there and keep the front door area clear while we work. On Cheam Road or Reigate Road we use the nearest side road.

Can you do an end-of-tenancy carpet clean before a flat handover?

We do. Deposit-return cleans are a regular booking around the station and the smaller flats off Cheam Road. We clean every carpeted room to letting standard and can fit it around your check-out slot. Give us the date and the agent’s deadline and we will book a time that lands before the keys go back.

How long will carpets take to dry in an East Ewell 1930s house?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, and a stair flight a little quicker. A thick wool bedroom carpet can stay damp longer in cooler weather, so we open a window and suggest keeping the room aired for the rest of the day. If a piece looks set to run long, we say so on the day.

The dog comes home from Nonsuch Park soaked. Can you lift the wet-dog smell from our carpet?

Mostly, yes. Wet-dog smell sits in the base of the pile with the mud, and a hot-water rinse with a pre-treatment lifts most of it from the carpet and from a fabric dog bed or sofa. Where a dog has wet the same spot more than once, the urine can reach the underlay, and the smell may come back on a warm day. We check those spots first and tell you before we start.

Our house was built after 2000. Does a newer carpet need different treatment?

Often it does. In this census area 15.0% of homes date from 2000 or later, and new homes are usually fitted with nylon or polypropylene. Synthetic fibre takes a hotter rinse and dries fast, but polypropylene holds on to oily marks, so we pre-treat traffic lanes with that in mind. Tell us the carpet type if you know it.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up right, we return and put it straight at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Sutton and East Ewell since 2009.

What our customers say in East Ewell.

★★★★★
Whole upstairs cleaned before my mum moved in with us. Bedrooms hadn't been touched in years and the difference is night and day. He was careful round the new furniture and left everything as he found it. Can't fault it.

Kitchen and conservatory tiles had grime in the grout that mopping never shifted. They look brand new now and the grout is a proper colour again. Tidy worker, no splashes up the cabinets.

Our dog had made the corner sofa pretty grim and there was a felt tip mark from the grandchildren on one cushion. All gone. Smelled fresh for days afterwards. Really pleased we rang them.

End of tenancy clean on our old flat to get the deposit back. Carpets came up well and the agent was happy, so job done. They turned up at the very end of the slot they gave me which had me a bit anxious watching the clock, but the work itself was fine.

Stairs were grubby and there was a stubborn candle wax mark on the landing from a fallen candle. Wax came out completely which I was impressed by. Drying took a fair bit longer than the chap quoted so we were tiptoeing about that evening, but a good result overall.
