Euston Square station opened as Gower Street in January 1863, on the Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground line. Across Euston Road, the Georgian terraces of North Gower Street were carved into flats long ago, many now hotels, lets and student rooms. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Euston Square, NW1, since 2009, up to the Regent’s Park Estate. We charge from £36 a room, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Georgian terraces on one side, council blocks on the other

Euston Square sits at the southern tip of NW1, wrapped round the station on the corner of Euston Road and Gower Street, next to UCL, with its south entrance facing the tower of University College Hospital. The station took its present name in 1909 and runs the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines; Euston mainline is a few minutes east on foot, beyond Euston Square Gardens. Almost nothing here is a house in the ordinary sense. North Gower Street is lined mostly with Georgian terraced houses, now largely hotels, student accommodation and flats, with council housing and rebuilt plots between them. Number 187, where Giuseppe Mazzini lodged from 1837 to 1840, stood in for 221B Baker Street in the BBC’s Sherlock. South of the road, many of the Georgian houses on Gower Street itself have become small hotels.

Step a little north and the stock changes completely. The Regent’s Park Estate, nearly 2,000 council homes laid out around Robert Street in the 1950s, fills the streets between Albany Street and Hampstead Road, and its north-western edge is being rebuilt around the HS2 and Euston works. So the carpets we meet split two ways: older wool and patterned runners in the converted period flats, and harder-wearing mid-pile carpet in the estate maisonettes and the newer blocks.

How does the census describe Euston Square?

As a big council estate. The census area that holds Euston Square’s streets is the one called Euston, north of the main road, and the Regent’s Park Estate outweighs everything else in it. Houses barely feature (3.5%), and flats in converted houses are only 3.7%, so the Georgian conversions of North Gower Street are a small slice of the count; the VOA puts just 9.7% of homes before 1900. Another 10.3% went up between the wars. The rest is mostly post-war council building and the newer blocks.

The commonest home is a two-bed flat (34.4%), and that is the booking we get most: two bedrooms, a lounge and a hall. In a two-bed on North Gower Street, the bedrooms and the lounge together are £115. One home in eight (13.5%) is heated by electricity alone, and on a cold day those rooms dry more slowly unless the heaters are on.

Communal stairs, small lounges, basement damp

The job pattern here is dense-living wear. Communal stairs in converted houses, like the ones off Euston Street, go grey down the centre from constant feet, and the colour comes back once the traffic lane is lifted properly. Lounges take party spills, red wine included, because so many of these flats are small and the carpet is the floor everyone sits on. We also get a steady run of mattress cleans, children’s accidents and the like, and rugs cleaned in place, a nail-varnished jute rug among them.

Basement and garden flats in the old terraces hold damp and dry slower than a bright upper floor. A deep clean on a sofa or a thick wool carpet down there can take a little longer than the usual 6 to 7 hours for carpet and 10 to 12 for upholstery. We tell you that on the day and leave the windows and airflow set, but the room sets the pace.

Two parking zones meet at Euston Road

There are no driveways here, and Euston Road is a TfL red route, so we never stop on it. South of the road, around Gower Street and the UCL campus, the streets are in Camden’s CA-E zone, controlled from 8:30am to 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday; in autumn 2025 Camden consulted on longer hours, up to 7am to 9pm on weekdays, with Sundays added. North of the road, North Gower Street, Melton Street and the estate fall in CA-G, controlled on weekdays from 8:30am to 6:30pm and on Saturday mornings.

We unload at the kerb on a paid bay and keep the van close, so flag the nearest bay or a loading bay when you book. In the terraces, the upper flats are reached by a narrow shared stair, which we carry the machine up by hand, laying the hose over dust sheets on the landings. Lift shoes and post off the communal stair carpet if it is being done, and let your neighbours know the stair will be damp until the evening.

Carpets, sofas, mattresses and rugs near UCL

For carpets we use hot-water extraction, the steam carpet cleaning method that rinses the pile and lifts the traffic-lane grey out of communal stairs and lounges. Sofas, armchairs and mattresses are done as upholstery cleaning, the fabric tested first so a musty basement two-seater comes back fresh without over-wetting. Jute, wool and other delicate floor pieces get rug cleaning in the flat itself, with a photo sent first for anything very old or fragile. We cover the rest of Camden on the same fixed prices, and reach across north London from Euston out to Golders Green.

Your Euston Square questions

Do you cover Gower Place, North Gower Street and the Regent’s Park Estate?

Yes, all the streets around Euston Square station, including Gower Place, North Gower Street, Endsleigh Gardens, Melton Street, Euston Street and Doric Way, plus the Regent’s Park Estate up towards Hampstead Road and Albany Street. If you are a short walk into Bloomsbury or Somers Town, we still cover you on the same fixed prices.

How do you park for a job around Euston Square?

At the kerb, in a paid or loading bay, because there are no driveways. South of Euston Road you are in Camden’s CA-E zone, controlled 8:30am to 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday; north of it, CA-G runs on weekdays and Saturday mornings. If you can flag the nearest bay when you book, it saves time on arrival.

Can you get a wine or varnish spill out of a Euston Square carpet?

Often, yes, especially if you call quickly. Fresh red wine on a lounge carpet and spills on flat-weave rugs respond well to prompt hot-water extraction. With an older or set stain, or anything that has bleached the fibre, we tell you on the spot whether it will lift fully or only improve.

How long will a carpet take to dry in a flat here?

In a bright upper-floor flat, most carpets and sofas are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract hard and leave little water behind. A mattress, a thick wool carpet, or any room at garden or basement level holds more damp and can need most of the day, so we time the visit and set up airflow to help it along.

Can you clean a student let at the end of the academic year?

Yes. With UCL on the doorstep and student housing along North Gower Street, the weeks after exams are busy for check-out cleans. Book early for late June or September, give us the agent’s check-out date, and we clean the bedrooms, the shared lounge and the stairs in one visit, with a dated receipt for the deposit.

My building’s stair carpet is shared. Can the freeholder book it separately?

Yes. We clean a communal stair as stairs, from £41 a flight, and address the receipt to the freeholder or managing agent, while you book your own flat for the same day. Tell us how many flights and landings there are, and we will send one fixed price for the stair before anyone commits.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up right, we come back and put it straight. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Euston Square and the rest of Camden since 2009.

What our customers say in Euston Square.

★★★★★
Two seater fabric sofa that had taken on a real musty smell in our basement flat. After they'd been it smelled clean and the cushions looked plumper somehow. Booked it around my work hours which was helpful.

Red wine went all over the lounge carpet at a leaving party for a colleague. Panicked and called them next morning. Honestly thought we'd lost the carpet but it's like it never happened.

The communal stairs in our converted house were grey with foot traffic. Now you can actually see the proper colour again. Quick, tidy and reasonably priced.

I work long hours in chambers nearby and barely had time, so I appreciated how easy they made it. Coffee had been ground into the office carpet at home for months and it's spotless now. Very professional.

A small silk rug I was nervous about. They handled it with real care and it came back beautifully clean with the colours brightened. Talked me through how to keep it nice too.

Our brown leather two seater had got dry and marked from suncream off the kids in summer. They cleaned and conditioned it and it feels supple again. Polite, on time, no mess left behind.
