What Falconwood homes are like
Falconwood arrived all at once. Until 1895 most of it was West Wood; the trees came down for Westwood Farm, and in the early 1930s New Ideal Homesteads bought the farm and covered it with around 2,000 houses as a south-westward extension of Welling, aimed at London commuters. The railway followed the bricks: Falconwood station opened in 1936 on the Bexleyheath line, and Southeastern trains still run from it to Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria from Zone 4. The house that dominates is the bay-fronted three-bed semi, with terraces, bungalows and a few blocks of flats mixed through, and nearly all of it keeps carpet upstairs whatever has happened to the ground floor.
The odd thing about Falconwood is the line through the middle. The Greenwich and Bexley borough boundary splits the estate, so the western streets carry Eltham’s SE9 postcode and the eastern ones Welling’s DA16, and Royal Mail has refused repeated requests from the SE9 side to switch. Shopping happens at two parades, Falconwood Parade on The Green and the shops at Lingfield Crescent. The northern edge is the real draw: Shepherdleas Wood, Oxleas Wood and Eltham Park North sit just over the A2 East Rochester Way, reached by footpaths off Rochester Way, Welling Way and Riefield Road, and the footbridge by the station carries the Capital Ring over the railway and the dual carriageway into the trees. That woodland was defended, too. The 1993 river-crossing road scheme that would have carved through Oxleas was dropped after more than 3,000 people pledged to stand in front of the bulldozers.
