Gordon Hill is named after a house that stood near the top of the slope, home in the 18th century to Lord George Gordon of the Gordon Riots. It came down around 1860, and when the station opened in 1910 the bay-fronted terraces filled in fast. London Carpet Cleaning covers Gordon Hill, EN2, from £36 a room. Carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From Gordon House to the Hertford Loop
Gordon House was built on the old Chase near the top of what is now Gordon Hill. After Lord George Gordon it belonged to Sir Thomas Hallifax, a Lord Mayor of London, and once it was demolished, around 1860, the land was laid out for housing. Building really took off in 1909, with the railway on its way: Gordon Hill station opened on 4 April 1910 on the Hertford Loop, at the top of Gordon Hill Road on Lavender Hill, and it still runs Great Northern trains to Moorgate twice an hour off-peak, in fare zone 5.
So most of what we clean near the station is Edwardian and late Victorian: bay-fronted terraces and the odd villa. Climb towards Slades Hill and the stock changes to inter-war semis, many of them three-bedroom family homes with their own drives. The shops sit along Lavender Hill and Lancaster Road, and Chase Farm Hospital, which began as a Poor Law orphanage in 1886 and opened its new main building in 2019, is the big landmark up on The Ridgeway.
Behind the houses lies Hilly Fields. Enfield’s council bought 62 acres of farmland from Archdeacon Potter and opened it as a public park in 1911, a year after the trains arrived, and Turkey Brook forms its northern edge. The streets climb enough that you feel the “Hill” in the name, and on a wet day you can see the park in the hallways.
Gordon Hill homes in numbers
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 35.1% |
| Semi-detached houses | 19.5% |
| Three bedrooms | 35.7% |
| Owned outright | 29.4% |
| Built before 1919 | 32.9% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 18.0% |
The census puts Gordon Hill into a neighbourhood named after Chase Side, the road running down towards Enfield Town, but the streets are the same mix. Almost a third of homes (32.9%) were built before 1919, and 21.1% before 1900. Terraced houses are the biggest single type at 35.1%, and three bedrooms (35.7%) is the usual size. For us that means a long straight flight from a narrow hall, and that flight is where the wear shows first.
Owners who have paid off the mortgage hold 29.4% of homes, so plenty of carpets here are good wool laid years ago and looked after. The 18.0% built between the wars are mostly the semis up the hill. In one of the bay-fronted terraces, three bedrooms, the through-lounge and the stairs, the price is £210 all in. Just 1.4% of homes have no central heating, so drying is rarely a problem.

Stairs first, then the park
The job that comes up most here is stairs and landings. The Edwardian houses have a long straight flight from the hall, and after years of use the middle of the run goes dark while the edges stay clean, so the carpet looks worn before its time. We work the traffic lane and the edges round the spindles separately to even it back out. Wool is common in the period homes and it comes up beautifully, holding its colour once it is dry.
Hilly Fields and the Trent Park edge bring mud in over winter, especially in dog-walking households. Where a stair carpet has a true worn path, the pile flattened and the backing showing through from years of footfall, cleaning lifts the dirt and the look, but it cannot put back fibre that has already gone, and we point that out on the doorstep.
Permit hours and parking near the station
Gordon Hill does have a controlled parking zone. Enfield’s zone map shows the Gordon Hill zone covering the streets round the station, in force Monday to Friday from noon to 1pm only. A one-hour window like that is there to stop all-day commuter parking, so we can usually work round it or move the van for the hour, and finish without a permit. Up on The Ridgeway side, the Chase Farm Hospital zone runs much longer, Monday to Friday from 9am to 6.30pm, and there we need a visitor permit from you or a bay to use.
The council has also consulted on controls for the Holtwhites Hill streets, so it pays to check the signs on your road when you book. Most of the inter-war semis towards Slades Hill have drives, which keeps the hose run short. On the steeper terraced streets we park as close as we can and carry the kit; with the hill, it helps if the front path and hall are clear when we arrive.

What we clean in Gordon Hill homes
We bring the same van and kit whatever the job. Our hot-water carpet cleaning lifts ground-in traffic and set-in spills from the stair carpets and lounges round here, while the sofa and upholstery service handles the big fabric corner suites that take a beating once the grandchildren are about. A good front-room rug with a soaked-in wine stain is a job for our rug cleaning: we pre-treat the stain, then shampoo and rinse the rug in the home during the visit. We cover the rest of Enfield too, along with neighbours like Enfield Chase and Clay Hill just up the road.
Asked in Gordon Hill
Which streets do you cover around Gordon Hill, up to Slades Hill?
All of Gordon Hill and the wider EN2 district, from Lavender Hill and Gordon Hill Road by the station out to Slades Hill, Phipps Hatch Lane and Brigadier Hill. We also reach the EN1 side near Carterhatch Lane and across to Enfield Town. If you are not sure your road is in, send the postcode and we will confirm.
Is parking a problem for the van near Gordon Hill station?
Rarely. Most of the inter-war semis up towards Slades Hill have their own drives, and the side streets off Lavender Hill are usually open. Closer to the station and Chase Farm Hospital the controlled zones can be tighter on a weekday, so let us know the address and we will sort where to pull up before we arrive.
Do you clean the older wool carpets in the period houses?
Yes, and they are some of the best results we get. We adjust the heat and the rinse for wool so it is not over-wet, then groom the pile so it dries soft and even. The bay-fronted Edwardian rooms around here often hold good-quality carpet that has plenty of life left once the years of dust are flushed out of it.
How long until carpets are dry in a Gordon Hill terrace?
Usually 6 to 7 hours, and until then we ask you to stay off them, or use the stairs carefully in clean socks, not shoes. We use a powerful machine that pulls most of the moisture back out, so there is no soaking and no damp smell left behind. Open a window or two and an Edwardian front lounge is generally ready to use again by the evening if we clean it in the morning.
I walk the dog on Hilly Fields every day. How often should the carpets be cleaned?
For a hall and stairs that take a muddy dog twice a day, once or twice a year keeps the grit from wearing the pile; bedrooms can go much longer. Between visits, a doormat inside and out and a weekly vacuum of the stairs make the biggest difference. Book us when the traffic lane on the stairs starts to look grey, before it flattens.
Can you clean the carpets before we put the house on the market?
Yes, and it is worth timing. Book us a few days before the photographs so every room is dry and the pile has settled. We price room by room, so you can do just the hall, stairs and lounge that buyers see first. The stairs are £41 a flight and a living room £43, and the total is fixed before we come, so the cost is known before the listing goes live.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot you pointed out comes back, we return and put it right at no cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, we use shoe covers indoors, and we have cleaned for Gordon Hill and the rest of Enfield since 2009.
