This is the quiet north-western edge of Hillingdon, where the towpath threads between Harefield village and the Buckinghamshire boundary at Denham. The housing here splits three ways. There are the old Victorian railway cottages off Park Lane and Summerhouse Lane, brick-built and modest. There are the canalside developments that have gone up over the past twenty-five years, Coppermill Lock by Linden Homes, plus Royal Quay and Salamander Quay, townhouses and flats that back straight onto the water. And there are the larger detached and semi-detached houses set further back up Harvil Road.
The nearest mainline station is Denham, on the Chiltern line into Marylebone in a little over half an hour. There is no Underground out here, which is part of why the area kept its village feel. A cleaner passes Harefield Marina and the Hillingdon Narrowboats Association moorings on the way in, and the London LOOP footpath shares the towpath through the whole stretch. Parking is the easiest part of the job, with most homes on a drive or generous kerb space and none of the controlled-zone pressure you get further into London.

Living near the water shapes the work. The biggest single job is towpath mud. The path gets churned through autumn and winter, and it walks straight off boots and dog paws into the hall and lounge, leaving long brown trails on lighter carpets that we lift out regularly. The canalside flats and townhouses bring the second pattern, which is drying. Air sits damper close to the water, especially in ground-floor rooms, so a heavy carpet can take longer than the usual one to two hours to feel fully dry. We use the strongest extraction we can, but in deep winter a canalside ground floor may want a window cracked and a few extra hours.
One honest limit. If towpath grit has been ground into a wool or wool-mix carpet over several seasons and the pile is physically worn flat in the traffic line, a clean restores the colour and lifts the dirt, but it will not put back fibre that has already abraded away. Do you charge extra to reach the canalside developments?
No. Coppermill Lock, Royal Quay and Salamander Quay are all on our normal patch, and parking at them is straightforward, so there is no surcharge for access. If a block has a gated car park or a tight courtyard, just mention it when you book and we will bring the right length of hose so we are not running cable across the whole forecourt.
Can you get dog and towpath dirt out of a light hall carpet?
Usually yes. Mud and the grey towpath film respond well to hot-water extraction once we have pre-treated the traffic lane and worked the pile. The exception is grit left to grind in for years, which can dull a carpet permanently, so catching it within a season or two gives by far the best result.
How long will a carpet take to dry near the water?
Most rooms are touch-dry in one to two hours. Close to the canal, on a ground floor or a damp winter day, allow a little longer, because the air holds more moisture down by the water. We extract as much as the machine will pull and can open up the room before we leave, so you are walking on it the same afternoon in nearly every case.
