Greenhithe is one of only four places on the south bank between Tower Bridge and the estuary where you can walk down to the river’s edge, and its narrow High Street still runs parallel to the Thames. Up the slope, older terraces line Knockhall Road and Charles Street. London Carpet Cleaning covers Greenhithe, DA9, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A riverside village and its new quarter
Greenhithe is a Thames-side village in the Borough of Dartford, four miles east of the town. Chalk was quarried here from the 1400s to the 1700s, and later the wharves served ship repair and lighterage; a pier built in 1842, now gone, took pleasure steamers to Rosherville Gardens in Gravesend. Dartford made the old village a conservation area in August 1975 and extended it in 1998. Along the High Street the buildings stand tight to the footpath with little or no front garden, a mix of Georgian town houses and Victorian terraces, with a few timber-framed survivors.
East of the village stands Ingress Abbey, built in 1833 in Tudor Gothic style for Alderman James Harmer and listed Grade II, on an estate that goes back to at least the 1300s. Much of its old estate is now Ingress Park, a steep riverside development of roughly 400 mixed-tenure flats, maisonettes and townhouses, much of it newer flats with balconies and Thames views, and a fair amount of it let.
Up the slope around Knockhall Road and Charles Street are Victorian and turn-of-the-century terraces, plus a run of solid 1970s three-bed end-of-terrace houses, settled family streets where a carpet has often been down a long while. Greenhithe for Bluewater station runs Southeastern and Thameslink trains on the North Kent line.
What the 2021 census says about the area
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in purpose-built blocks | 33.3% |
| Terraced houses | 26.2% |
| Rented privately | 25.0% |
| Three bedrooms | 32.9% |
| Built before 1919 | 9.2% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 15.1% |
Greenhithe shares its census area with Castle Hill and the Dartford side of Ebbsfleet, which pulls the figures towards new building. Even so, the village’s two halves show. A third of homes (33.3%) are purpose-built flats, many of them at Ingress Park, and a quarter (25.0%) are rented privately, so end-of-tenancy and move-in cleans are common down by the river. An Ingress Park two-bed, both bedrooms plus the living room, is £115.
The older village is a small slice. Only 9.2% of homes date from before 1919, the High Street and the first terraces up the hill, and 15.1% from 1973 to 1999, which includes those 1970s end-of-terrace houses. Terraces make up 26.2% of homes and 32.9% have three bedrooms, typical of the houses up the slope, where the family job is the lounge, the stairs and the landing. Only 1.0% of homes have no central heating, and a warm flat dries a carpet quickly.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Dartford 002) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Permit streets, season tickets and riverside lifts
Parts of the village are permit-controlled. Dartford’s permit parking scheme for Greenhithe covers Castle Street, Cotton Lane, Hillcrest Drive, Ivy Bower Close, Ivy Villas, King Edward Road, Providence Street and Riverview Road, and Station Road and Eagles Road are set aside for season-ticket holders. Kent’s 2022 traffic order also covered no-waiting lines at the junction of Knockhall Road and London Road, so we unload away from that corner.
The riverside blocks at Ingress Park can mean parking a short walk from the entrance and a carry to the lift. Tell us the block and whether there is a loading bay or a visitor bay, and we sort it before the day. Traffic is also heavier than it was: since Galley Hill Road closed in April 2023, more cars come through Greenhithe on the way between Dartford and Gravesend, and the Fastrack B no longer runs to Ingress Park.
The pale greige carpet fitted as standard in a lot of the Ingress Park flats shows every footfall, and a winter of it in a busy hallway can leave a grey traffic lane ground into the base of the pile. We pre-treat it, hot-rinse it and it lifts a long way, but a lane worn in over months may only even out, and we say so at the door.

How we clean carpets, upholstery and rugs
We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, which pulls the grit back out of the base of the pile, and we match the water to the fibre so a delicate piece is cleaned gently while a hard-wearing synthetic takes a deeper rinse. We also clean sofas and velvet upholstery, brushing the pile up afterwards so it dries without water marks, and we clean wool rugs in the room through rug cleaning, asking for a photo first with silk. Along the A226 we also cover nearby Stone.
Greenhithe, your questions
Do you cover Greenhithe from Ingress Park up to Knockhall Road?
Yes, the whole of DA9, from Ingress Park and the Quay up through Knockhall Road, Charles Street and London Road, and out towards the Bluewater side. That means end-of-tenancy cleans in the riverside flats as well as freshen-ups in the older family terraces, with no call-out fee or boundary surcharge.
Can you get the van in down at Ingress Park and the riverside blocks?
Usually, yes. The riverside apartments often mean parking a short walk from the entrance and a carry to the lift, so we bring extra hose and plan the access when you book. Tell us the block and whether there is a loading or visitor bay on the call.
Do you do end-of-tenancy carpet cleans for the rented flats here?
We do, and it is a big part of the Greenhithe round given how many lets sit around Ingress Park. We clean to a handover standard, work to your check-out date, and give you a dated receipt for the landlord or inventory clerk so the deposit is protected. Ideally, book us for a day or two ahead of the check-out.
How long do carpets dry in Greenhithe’s riverside flats and older terraces?
Expect 6 to 7 hours to dry, since the machine draws the water back out as it cleans. The greige synthetics common in the newer Ingress Park flats dry at the shorter end, and older wool in the Knockhall terraces is cleaned with less moisture so it dries safely. Open a window and a room cleaned in the morning is usable by the evening.
Our house is on the old High Street. Is anything different about cleaning it?
A little. The High Street is narrow and the houses sit right on the footpath, so we park where we legally can and run the hose in through the front door, with a mat on the step. Inside, older houses can have uneven boards and old underlay, and some are partly timber-framed. We keep the moisture low and test any old wool before we start.
We live on one of the permit streets. How do we sort parking for you?
Use a visitor voucher from your Dartford allowance for the van, for the time we are with you, usually a morning. If you have none left, tell us and we park on the nearest unrestricted street and bring the long hose.
A spot that reappears after a Greenhithe clean gets a free return visit under our re-clean guarantee. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets along DA9 and the rest of the Dartford riverside since 2009.
