St Augustine’s Tower, a late 13th-century ragstone tower and the oldest building in Hackney, stands in St John’s Church Gardens a short walk from the Hackney Empire, which opened on Mare Street in December 1901. Around them are Victorian terraces on Graham Road and Amhurst Road, flats cut from those houses, and post-war blocks. London Carpet Cleaning covers Hackney Central, E8, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Old Hackney, split into flats
Hackney Central is the old core of the borough, the run of streets around Mare Street and the pedestrianised Narroway. The church that went with St Augustine’s Tower was pulled down in 1798 for the bigger St John-at-Hackney, but the tower stayed, and it is now Grade I listed. The Empire, by Frank Matcham, is Grade II* and seats 1,275. Between them and the railway the housing is a real mix: solid Victorian terraces on Graham Road and Amhurst Road, Georgian survivors in the Clapton Square Conservation Area just north of the churchyard, and post-war council blocks filling the gaps that bombing and later clearance left.
A great many of the period houses have long been divided into upstairs and downstairs flats. Two stations sit almost on top of each other: Hackney Central is on the Mildmay line of the Overground, and a covered walkway takes you through to Hackney Downs on the Weaver line, so most homes here are a few minutes from both. That mix of homes is why we bring the method to suit the carpet: a converted flat and an estate maisonette on the same street can have quite different fibres down.
The census picture around Mare Street
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in converted houses | 22.8% |
| Flats over shops or in other converted buildings | 9.5% |
| Flats in purpose-built blocks | 54.4% |
| Rented privately | 40.2% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 35.0% |
| Built before 1900 | 43.8% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 19.3% |
This census area carries the name Hackney Central and sits right around the station and Mare Street. What stands out is age. Built before 1900 covers 43.8% of homes, and almost a quarter (22.8%) are flats in converted houses, so the typical job is a Victorian house cut into two or three flats, each with its own carpets and one shared stair. Add the 9.5% of flats over shops and in other converted buildings, along Mare Street and the Narroway, and about a third of all homes are conversions of one kind or another.
The post-war blocks show too: 19.3% of homes were built between 1945 and 1972, the estate flats where the carpet sits on a concrete floor. Renting is the norm, 40.2% privately and 35.0% from the council or a housing association, so move-out cleans run all year. A one-bed conversion off Graham Road, bedroom and living room, is £79. Only 3.3% of homes have no central heating; in a cold top-floor flat, the radiators on low for an hour after we leave make the difference.

Red wine, takeaways and tired leather
The job we are called to most in Hackney Central is a spill in a busy home, and this part of E8 lives close to its restaurants and bars. Red wine on a bedroom carpet after friends came round, a curry mark ground into a pale sofa cushion on a Friday night, a wool rug under the dining table that has soaked up a dropped glass: that is a normal week. Stairs and landings gone grubby in a shared conversion come up often too. Leather suites are common in the flats, and we clean and condition those so the hide is fed as well as cleaned.
One limit is worth saying plainly. An old dye mark, the sort left by hair dye on a stair tread or a strong colour long dried into pale wool, will lift a great deal but can leave a faint trace you catch in certain light. We tell you that before we start, so nobody is surprised at the end.
Parking, the Narroway and school closures
Central Hackney is in parking Zone D, controlled Monday to Saturday from 8.30am until 11pm, so the evening is no help and a permit or a paid bay is needed for most of the day. The Narroway is pedestrianised, so for a flat above a shop there we park on a side street and carry the hose and tools round. Clapton Square, though, sits in Zone S, where control ends at 6.30pm.
Two School Streets matter here. Around The Olive School, Clapton Square, St John’s Church Road, Sutton Place and Halidon Close are closed to traffic from 7.45am to 8.45am and 2.45pm to 3.45pm on term-time weekdays; Chatham Place and Ram Place, by Morningside Primary, close from 8.30am to 9.30am and 3pm to 4pm. Delivery vans are not exempt, so we book those streets around the closures. In a split house, clear the shared hall of bikes and post before we come, and tell us which flight belongs to which flat.

What we clean in Hackney Central homes
Most carpets here get our hot-water steam carpet cleaning, which lifts ground-in traffic and red-wine marks and leaves the pile dry within 6 to 7 hours. Fabric and leather settees and dining chairs go to the upholstery cleaning team, who match the method to the material and feed tired leather after cleaning it. A large or valuable rug, such as a wool piece from under the dining table, can go on our rug cleaning service, cleaned in the home on the same visit as the carpets. We cover the rest of Hackney on the same fixed prices, and neighbours in London Fields and Dalston too.
Hackney Central, your questions
Which parts of E8 do you cover?
All of Hackney Central and the wider E8 streets, from Mare Street and the Narroway across to Amhurst Road, Graham Road, Morning Lane and Well Street. We work the period terraces and the estates alike, so wherever you are on the map, the price and the service are the same.
Is parking a problem around Mare Street?
Central Hackney sits in controlled parking Zone D, restricted Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 11pm, so a permit or a paid bay is needed through the day. We carry long hoses, so on the estates and the narrower terraces we work from a bay nearby without keeping the van at your door.
Can you get red wine and curry stains out?
Usually, yes, and they are among our most common jobs in E8, given how close the homes are to Mare Street’s bars and takeaways. Fresh red wine and food spills lift well with the right pre-treatment and a controlled hot-water rinse. The sooner we see it the better, though we clear plenty that have been left a while.
How long will carpet take to dry in a Hackney Central flat?
Our process leaves carpets dry in about 6 to 7 hours, so a morning clean is ready for the evening. A thick wool pile, or an upper-floor conversion off Graham Road with little airflow, may want a window open and a little longer. We leave everything damp, never soaked, and the carpet finishes drying after we have packed the van.
I live on Clapton Square. When can you come?
Any time from 8.45am on a school day. The Olive School’s School Street covers Clapton Square, Sutton Place, St John’s Church Road and Halidon Close from 7.45am to 8.45am and again from 2.45pm to 3.45pm in term time, and no vehicle may drive in without an exemption. A late-morning slot is easiest, and most flats are finished well before the afternoon closure.
Can you clean my flat and the shared stair carpet on one visit?
Yes. Nearly a quarter of homes in this census area are flats in converted houses, and the shared stair takes every resident’s feet. We price it as stairs, from £41 a flight, and do it straight after your own rooms. If the freeholder or the other flats are splitting the cost, tell us when you book and we will put the stairs on a separate receipt.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up as agreed, we return and put it right at no extra cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across Hackney Central and the rest of Hackney since 2009.
