What Hainault homes are like
Most of Hainault is one big planned estate. The London County Council laid out 2,779 houses here between 1947 and 1953, a cottage estate built on land cleared from the old royal forest, which is why so many of the road names borrow from it. A good number of the original houses were steel-framed with pressed-steel sheet cladding on the upper storeys, an unusual post-war build for the time, and many have since been re-clad and extended by their owners.
Manford Way is the spine that runs the length of the estate, with New North Road, Huntsman Road, Forest Road and the long stretch of Hainault Road feeding off it. The Central line station sits on the Hainault Loop, the branch that runs round through Newbury Park one way and Woodford the other, and the whole place is Zone 5. Hainault is a genuine edge: it is part of the London Borough of Redbridge, but it backs straight onto the Essex boundary, and the IG7 postcode shares its Chigwell post town with the county next door. To the north and east is Hainault Forest Country Park, roughly 300 acres of ancient woodland with Foxburrows Farm and the boating lake, which any cleaner working the Forest Road end drives past on the way in.

Is parking a problem on the estate?
Rarely. The cottage estate was built with front gardens, verges and space at the kerb, so most of Hainault has none of the controlled-parking hassle you get closer to central London.
