Everyone in Harlesden gives directions from the Jubilee Clock, the red cast-iron landmark at the bend of the High Street. London Carpet Cleaning has worked the streets around it since 2009, from flats above the High Street parades to bay-fronted terraces on Tubbs Road and Wendover Road. Across Harlesden, NW10, prices start from £36 a room, and the carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A late-Victorian town on the railway

Harlesden was a village of orchards and inns until the railway arrived. Willesden Junction opened in 1866, sewers followed in 1871, and the town grew fast between 1880 and 1910, pushed on by new industry and by the trams. A horse tram reached the Royal Oak by 1888, run by the Harrow Road and Paddington Tramway Company, and it was electrified in 1906. Housing spread along Minet Avenue, Acton Lane and the roads beside them in the 1890s. Industry stayed: the McVitie and Price works became the largest biscuit factory in the western world, with 2,600 staff by 1978.

The housing that went up in that rush still sets the pattern: bay-fronted terraces on streets like Tubbs Road and Wendover Road, taller houses off Craven Park Road, and long shopping parades with flats above them along the High Street. A large share of those terraces is now split into flats, so communal stairs and landlord handovers make up a big part of our diary here. Harlesden station on Acton Lane carries the Bakerloo line and the Lioness line in Zone 3, one stop from Willesden Junction.

Shops below, flats above

The town centre has been a conservation area since March 1994. Brent’s appraisal describes tall, narrow-fronted buildings of three and four storeys crowding a fairly narrow street, built plot by plot by speculative builders who put small parades of shops under houses. Some older terraces were simply extended forward into shops, as at Harlesden Terrace, 75 to 85 High Street, after 1878. All Souls Church and its vicarage date from 1879, the church known for its octagonal roof by E.J. Tarver, and the Green Man was rebuilt in an Arts and Crafts style in 1906 to 1907.

For us, those buildings mean flats reached by a side door and a steep, narrow stair, with a carpet that takes every footstep from the street. North of the shops, Roundwood Park has been open since 1895; to the south, past the Grand Union Canal, the new Old Oak Common station is being built with 14 platforms for HS2 and the Elizabeth line.

Harlesden homes by the census

Flats of any kind78.0%
Flats in purpose-built blocks37.0%
Flats over shops or in other converted buildings4.1%
Built before 190065.1%
One-bedroom homes30.9%
Without central heating3.4%

The census area takes its name from the town and covers the High Street and the streets either side. Nearly four homes in five are flats (78.0%). Purpose-built blocks account for 37.0% of homes and the flats over the parades, counted with other converted buildings, for 4.1%; most of the rest are converted terraces. Almost two-thirds of homes (65.1%) were built before 1900, which is the late-Victorian boom in brick.

Homes are small. Nearly a third of households (30.9%) live in one bedroom, and two bedrooms is the most common size, so the usual booking is a flat, not a house. Two bedrooms and a living room come to £115 at our fixed rates. One figure we watch: 3.4% of homes have no central heating, and in those flats we book an early start and leave windows open, because a carpet dries slowly in a cold room.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Brent 031) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

What a typical week looks like

Most weeks here follow a familiar shape. Converted flats off the High Street change tenants often, so end-of-tenancy cleans of one or two bedrooms plus a lounge are our bread and butter. Stairs and landings in the taller terraces carry the hardest traffic in the house and always get the slow pass. Fabric sofas come up more than average too; more than one Manor Park Road party has ended with red wine in a seat cushion. On the Acton Lane side we clean a steady run of mattresses, often in pairs when a whole flat is being refreshed.

A lot of Harlesden lounge and stair carpets have given long service, and on stair nosings the pile is often walked flat. A deep clean pulls out the grey traffic line and lifts the colour back. It cannot re-thicken crushed pile. Where the fibre itself has worn away, we say so before we set up, and you decide whether the clean is worth paying for.

Permits on the Kensal Green side

Much of central Harlesden sits in Brent controlled parking zones. Brent’s parking review puts zones H and HW in Kensal Green and Harlesden wards, close to Harlesden and Willesden Junction stations, and both run 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. That means Saturday bookings need a permit too. A RingGo visitor session from you covers the van; if not, we find pay-and-display or park further out and carry in.

The High Street itself is a bus route with little room to stop, so we never unload on it. For a flat above a shop, tell us whether the door is at the front or round the back, and clear the stair of bikes and post. In a terrace, empty the landing and the hall, and we move the furniture in the rooms.

Deep cleaning for tired rental carpets

Our steam carpet cleaning is hot-water extraction: it flushes soil out of the pile and lifts it away, which is exactly what a tired rental carpet needs. For party-worn sofas and armchairs there is upholstery cleaning, and rug cleaning is done in your home, useful for the wool rug in the hallway that is due a shampoo along with the carpets. We cover neighbouring Stonebridge and Kensal Green on the same runs, and the rest of Brent with the same team and prices.

What Harlesden asks us

Which parts of Harlesden do you cover around the Jubilee Clock?

All of NW10 around the centre: the High Street and the streets behind it, Tubbs Road and Wendover Road, Craven Park and Craven Park Road, the roads ringing Roundwood Park, and the station end of Acton Lane. If you are just over a border in Willesden or Kensal Green, the same team and the same prices apply.

My street needs a parking permit. Is that a problem?

No. Much of central Harlesden sits in a Brent controlled parking zone, so give us the street name when you book and we plan around it. A RingGo visitor session covers the van if you have one; if not, we find pay-and-display or park further out and carry in. Your fixed price does not change either way.

Can you get red wine out of a sofa?

Usually, yes. Fresh tannin stains on fabric upholstery respond well to pre-treatment followed by hot-water extraction, and a cushion cover that has taken a full glass often comes up completely. Marks that have sat for months can leave a faint shadow, and we tell you the likely result before we start.

How long will a Harlesden flat take to dry?

Carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours and back in normal use the same day. Flats above the High Street shops dry quickly with two windows open. A dense older carpet on a cold day is slower, sometimes needing the whole evening, and we say so on the day.

Does the conservation area affect having my carpets cleaned?

No. Harlesden’s conservation area, in place since 1994, controls changes to the outside of buildings in the town centre, such as shopfronts and windows. Nothing we do touches that; inside, we work with dust sheets on the stairs and fix nothing to the walls.

I let several flats in one converted terrace. Can you do them together?

Yes. We clean each flat and the shared stairs in one visit, price every flat separately, and send one invoice to you or a receipt to each tenant, whichever you prefer. Give us access to all the flats for the day, or arrange the tenants’ times, and we work from the top floor down.

Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if you are not happy with any area, we come back and go over it again at no charge. Our technicians are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have been cleaning Harlesden and the rest of north-west London since 2009.

Carpets came up well, bedrooms look fresh. The drying took longer than the few hours mentioned, more like overnight. He was honest about it though, and fair on price.

Stairs and landing done, much improved. Lost a star as they were a fair bit late and I had to ring. The work itself was good and the price fair.
