Harmondsworth became one of Hillingdon’s first conservation areas in 1970, and its houses record most of the centuries since the Sun House went up around 1480: 1930s semis on Candover Close, rendered 1950s pairs west of Moor Lane, 1970s bungalows behind Summerhouse Lane. London Carpet Cleaning covers Harmondsworth, UB7, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

The barn, the church and the green
Harmondsworth keeps the shape of an old farming village, gathered around a triangular green with the High Street running off it. Winchester College built the Great Barn in 1426 for its manor farm here: nearly 60 metres long and 11 metres high, with 13 oak trusses holding up the roof, it is the largest timber-framed building in England and Grade I listed, the barn John Betjeman called the Cathedral of Middlesex. English Heritage has looked after it since 2012. Beside it stands St Mary’s, Grade II* listed, with parts going back to the 12th century, and the Five Bells, an early 17th-century pub, faces the green.
The village has no station. Getting about means buses along the Bath Road, the M4 at Junction 4, or a couple of miles north across the motorway to West Drayton for the Elizabeth line. Green Belt wraps round the village, and the airport fence is a short walk south.
A century of houses beyond the old core
Outside the historic centre, Hillingdon’s appraisal reads the village decade by decade. There was some building in the 1930s along Hatch Lane and Candover Close, where the semis have hipped red-tiled roofs and sweeping front gables, some pebble-dashed and some in brick. The wider estates came in the 1950s to the west of Moor Lane, simple two-storey rendered semis, and in the 1970s behind Summerhouse Lane and Cambridge Close, including School Road and Moorland Road, where plain semis sit beside bungalows. Smaller closes followed: Blondell Close and Acacia Mews in the 1980s, Meadowlea Close in the 1990s.
A good share of those houses is now privately let, some of them to Heathrow workers, so the carpets take heavy daily traffic and change hands often. The cottages near the church are another world, with narrow doorways and steep, tight stairs.
Harmondsworth in census figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Built before 1900 | 3.7% |
| Built before 1919 | 5.1% |
| Detached houses | 12.6% |
| Owned outright | 22.8% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 15.3% |
The figures cover Harmondsworth together with Sipson, Longford and the airport. The old cottages that give the green its look are a small slice of the whole: 5.1% of homes predate 1919, and 3.7% go back before 1900. Those are the homes where wool sits on old boards and the stairs are steep, and they get our gentlest method.
The rest of the picture is settled family housing. One home in eight is detached (12.6%), and 15.3% have four or more bedrooms. A four-bedroom detached house with a through-lounge and one flight of stairs comes to £246. Almost a quarter of homes (22.8%) are owned outright, and in those houses we often meet a wool carpet that has been down for many years.

Builders’ dust and festival cleans
Two things drive the work here: family life in the semis, and constant refurbishment of an old housing stock. In the houses off Hatch Lane, Moor Lane and Holloway Lane we see stair carpets worn into a grimy central path and felt-tip in the children’s rooms. A front room and hall cleaned after the plasterers have tramped grey dust through the house is one of our commonest jobs, and we take care round freshly painted skirting.
The village has a strong South Asian community, so we clean plenty of light sofas and lounge carpets ahead of Diwali and family gatherings, cooking-oil and curry marks included, along with end-of-tenancy carpet in the let houses. A curry or turmeric stain that has set, or old pet urine soaked through to the underlay, we improve a great deal and often clear, but we cannot always promise the last faint shadow will go. We say so before we start.
Narrow lanes, low doorways and the van
The High Street ends as a cul-de-sac and the lanes round St Mary’s and the barn are narrow, so near the green we park where we will not block a neighbour and run a long hose from the van. On the 1930s and 1950s streets most houses have their own frontage, and the van sits on your drive or at the kerb outside.
The cottages need a little more planning. Low doorways and tight, turning stairs mean we carry the kit in by hand and work the stairs with a small hand tool, one tread at a time. If a carpet is laid over old boards with no underlay, tell us, and we will keep the water right down. Clear ornaments off low window sills and deep-set ledges on the stairs, where a hose can catch them.

Carpets, sofas and rugs, cleaned in the village
Most Harmondsworth bookings are for hot-water extraction, which is how our steam carpet cleaning gets builders’ dust and cooking marks back out of the pile. A cream corner sofa with a curry stain, or a mattress after a pet accident, is a job for our upholstery cleaning, which takes in fabric or leather settees and dining chairs too. We clean wool rugs in the house for proper rug cleaning, shampooed and rinsed where they lie, anywhere in UB7. We work the other Heathrow villages next door on identical terms, from Sipson to West Drayton in the north, and further out through the rest of Hillingdon.
Harmondsworth households ask
Do you cover all of Harmondsworth, from the village green to Saxon Way?
All of UB7: the High Street and the green by the Five Bells, Hatch Lane, Moor Lane and Holloway Lane, Candover Close and Zealand Avenue, and out to Hatton Road and Saxon Way. Sipson, Longford and West Drayton are on the same fixed prices, and homes backing onto Harmondsworth Moor or the perimeter pay nothing for the visit.
Can you get the van into the older village streets by the barn and green?
Yes. The High Street is a cul-de-sac and the lanes around St Mary’s and the Great Barn are narrow, so we bring a long hose and run it from wherever the van can sit without blocking the road. Most houses here have their own frontage to pull onto, and if access looks tight by the green, tell us when you book and we will plan the pitch around it.
We have wool carpet in one of the old cottages by the green. Is it safe to clean?
Yes. A fair number of Harmondsworth’s period and listed cottages have wool or wool-blend carpet, which wants gentler chemistry and careful moisture control. We test an out-of-sight corner first, use wool-safe products and controlled heat, and leave the pile damp, never wet, so it dries evenly without browning at the edges over those old timber floors.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Harmondsworth cottage?
Carpets here need up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, as we extract most of the water on the final pass. Thick wool in a listed cottage near the church, or a downstairs room kept shut against the airport noise, can take longer, so we crack a window or run a fan. Keep to socks until it is fully dry. Stairs are usable again by the evening of a morning clean.
Our cottage is listed. Do we need consent before you clean the carpet?
No. Listed building consent covers works that change the building’s character, such as altering floors or joinery, and cleaning a fitted carpet does none of that. What we do take care over is the fabric underneath: old boards and early joinery do not like water, so in the listed cottages around the green we clean low-moisture and keep the edges and skirting dry.
We live in one of the 1970s bungalows. How is a home with no stairs priced?
Simply by the rooms. A bungalow with two bedrooms and a living room comes to £115, with no stairs to add. If there is a hall carpet too, tell us its size and we include it in the fixed quote. With everything on one level the clean is quick, and most bungalows are done well inside a morning.
Every clean in Harmondsworth is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a treated spot looks wrong once dry, we come back and fix it at no cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Harmondsworth and the wider Hillingdon since 2009.
