What Havering Park homes are like
Havering Park is the north-western corner of Collier Row, the part of RM5 that was laid out in the 1930s when the builder T.F. Nash bought up the land north of Collier Row Road and put up street after street of semi-detached houses. Most of what we clean here is that stock: three-bedroom 1930s semis with bay windows, a hall, and a staircase, set on roads like Lower Bedfords Road, Havering Drive and Taylor Close. They have front drives and gardens, which is why so many of the carpets we see have taken garden and forest mud through the front door rather than salt and grit off a pavement.
The other thing that defines the area is the green edge. Havering Country Park runs along the top of the district, with its pedestrian entrances on Clockhouse Lane and St Johns Road and the famous avenue of Wellingtonia trees, said to be the second largest plantation of giant sequoias in the country. Streets like Forest Approach and Brockley Crescent sit right against that boundary, and Hainault Forest is only a short way on. There is no station in Collier Row itself, so Romford is the nearest rail, but for us that green border matters more: it is where the soiling comes from.

The job we are called out for most here is the hallway and stairs. A 1930s semi funnels everyone through a narrow hall onto a single flight, and on the forest side of the estate that hall carpet does the hardest work in the house, taking mud off boots from the garden and park. We lift it evenly, edge to edge, and get into the skirting line and the back of each tread where a vacuum never reaches. Lounge suites and curtains are the next most common, and plenty of these houses still have an open fire, so the soft furnishings hold a faint smoky smell that a hot-water clean shifts.
