Near Haydons Road station, Milton Road and Tennyson Road belong to what Merton Council calls the Poets area, and the streets around them are lined with yellow-brick Victorian terraces, many of them split into flats. London Carpet Cleaning covers Haydons Road, SW19, from those conversions to the new apartments by the Plough Lane stadium, from £36 a room. Expect the carpets to be dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Victorian conversions and the flats at Plough Lane

Haydons Road runs along the north-east edge of Wimbledon, a working local street of convenience shops and takeaways, with Haydons Road station on the Thameslink Sutton Loop in Zone 3. The older housing is Victorian: yellow-brick terraces and period conversions on Gap Road, Quicks Road and Haydon Park Road, most split into two-bed flats and garden maisonettes. A lot of these still have wool or wool-mix carpet in the bedrooms and on the stairs, the kind that holds dirt deep in the pile.

The newer half of the picture sits around Plough Lane. AFC Wimbledon opened its new stadium there in November 2020, on the site of the old greyhound track, and around 600 homes were built alongside it. Haydons Road is the nearest station to the ground. Those flats came with pale, short-pile synthetic carpet throughout, which looks clean for a year or two and then starts to grey along the hallways and in front of the sofa.

The census area that holds Haydons Road station is named after the Broadway, and it stretches south to the town centre, so the figures cover the whole Victorian quarter between them. They confirm what you see from the street. Almost half the homes (44.1%) were built before 1900, and close to a quarter (23.4%) are flats carved out of converted houses, the garden flats and upstairs maisonettes that line Gap Road and the Poets. Only 7.3% date from 2000 or later, because most of the new stadium flats fall in the neighbouring census area to the north.

Renting drives a lot of our work. More than a third of households (36.9%) rent privately, so check-out cleans come round all year, often a two-bed flat timed for the day before an inventory. That flat, two bedrooms and a lounge, comes to £115. In a converted house there is usually a shared hall and stair carpet too, which takes the traffic of every flat and goes grey before anything else. Only 1.5% of homes have no central heating, so a carpet dries on time with the radiators on low.

Permit zones around the station

Most streets here are in Merton controlled parking zones, and they do not all keep the same hours. The Poets area, Caxton, Comper, Dryden, Milton, Tennyson and Garfield Roads, was consulted on in 2008 as zone H2, and Merton now lists H2 as Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, so it is uncontrolled at weekends. Part of Haydons Road itself, the odd numbers from 167 to 317, sits in zones 3E and 3F, which run Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm. Gap Road has its own afternoon-only zone, H3, from 3pm to 6.30pm.

In practice we park in a pay-and-display or shared-use bay as close as we can and run the hose to your door, and for a conversion flat we carry the machine up the communal stairs. If you have a visitor permit, it saves us time hunting for a bay. On AFC Wimbledon home match days, Wandsworth’s event controls switch on over the boundary from 1pm, so a morning slot on those days keeps things simple. Move bikes and buggies out of a shared hall before we arrive; it is the first thing we clean.

Two kinds of carpet, two kinds of job

From the terraces and conversions we get end-of-tenancy bedrooms before a new tenant unpacks, and stairs in maisonettes that have taken a battering. From the Plough Lane flats it is traffic-lane greying on light carpet and the general wear that comes with new-build pile. We hot-water extract everything, which lifts the soil out of the base of the pile, and we work on the heavier marks first so you can see what is shifting.

On light synthetic carpet in the newer flats, a traffic lane that has been walked greasy for two or three years will come up far cleaner, but the palest stretch by a doorway can stay a shade off the rest. The fibre itself has dulled, and cleaning does not re-colour it. We will tell you on the day if we think a lane is at that stage.

Our services near Haydons Road station

Most bookings here are hot-water carpet cleaning for bedrooms and stairs. We also do sofa and upholstery cleaning in the home, useful for the spills and settled grime a busy flat gathers, and rug cleaning done on your living-room floor, which suits a wool or large rug and starts from £35 up to 3m². If you are arranging work elsewhere, we cover the rest of Merton, and other parts of south-west London such as Kingston Vale.

Your Haydons Road questions

Which streets and postcodes do you cover around here?

We cover the whole SW19 stretch around Haydons Road station, including Gap Road, Quicks Road, Durnsford Road and the streets up towards Wimbledon Park, plus the newer flats along Plough Lane. South Wimbledon and the rest of the borough are on the same round, so booking is simple wherever you are.

Is parking a problem on match days at Plough Lane?

It can be. On AFC Wimbledon home match days Wandsworth’s controls over the boundary run from 1pm to 8.30pm, and the roads around the stadium fill up. If your appointment falls on a match day, tell us when you book and we will come in the morning and plan where the van sits so it does not hold anything up.

Our flat is a new-build with light carpet. Can you help?

Yes, and it is a big part of what we do around Plough Lane. Pale, short-pile synthetic carpet responds well to hot-water extraction, especially the greying hallways and the patch in front of the sofa. We use a controlled amount of moisture and groom the pile afterwards so it dries evenly and looks consistent across the room.

How long until the carpet is dry in a Haydons Road garden maisonette?

Most carpets here are dry within 6 to 7 hours, and best kept to socks, not shoes, until then. Ground-floor flats and some of the older garden maisonettes on roads like Haydon Park Road hold damp a little longer because air moves through them more slowly, so if drying speed matters we ventilate the room and do the heaviest carpets first.

Can you clean the shared stairs in our converted house?

Yes. In a house split into flats the communal hall and stair carpet takes everyone’s feet, and in this part of Wimbledon nearly a quarter of homes are flats in converted houses. We price the shared stairs as a flight, from £41, and can do them on the same visit as your own flat. If the freeholder is paying, tell us and the receipt goes to them.

Is a Saturday booking easier in the Poets area?

For parking, often yes. Zone H2, which covers the Poets streets, only runs Monday to Friday, so on a Saturday there are no permit hours to work round there. The 3E and 3F zones, which take in part of Haydons Road itself, are controlled on Saturdays too, so on the main road it makes less difference. Give us your street and we will suggest the best day.

Our re-clean guarantee covers every job: if a treated area does not come up as agreed, we return and sort it. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned homes across Merton since 2009.

What our customers say in Haydons Road.

★★★★★
Moved into a rented flat and the bedroom carpets were honestly grim from the last tenants. Had them cleaned before we unpacked and they came up so much better than expected. Felt like a fresh start. Really friendly chap too.

Our grey settee had a nail varnish spill from my girlfriend that I was sure was permanent. They got it out completely. Honestly amazed, I had written that cushion off. Tidy and quick as well.

Had our mattress cleaned after buying it second hand off a friend, just wanted peace of mind really. The technician was thorough and explained the drying time clearly. So much fresher to sleep on now. Great service.

Stairs in our maisonette were filthy and we have a baby crawling about so it bothered me. Booked, done, brilliant. The whole lot looks new and the chap was lovely with the dog who would not leave him alone.

Big living room rug with a curry stain from a takeaway night gone wrong. They got nearly all of it out and it smells lovely now. A very faint mark remains if you look closely, but for the price I am pleased and they were nice about it.

Lounge and hall carpet done, both had ground in dirt from a hectic year with two kids. Lovely result. It did take longer to dry than the few hours quoted so we were tiptoeing about all evening, but I would still use them again.
