What Hayes homes are like
Hayes is an interwar suburb built out of a small Kentish village, and the 1930s semi is the house we clean most. When Henry Boot demolished Hayes Place in 1933 he laid out an estate of more than 900 homes across what became Hayes Hill and the roads off Pickhurst Lane, and George Lane was extended for the same suburban push around 1937. Those houses have generous hallways, a straight flight of stairs and fitted carpet through the reception rooms, which is exactly the layout our machines are built for. Older Victorian villas sit along Hayes Lane, dating from the 1882 railway that first opened the village up, and the original core at Hayes Street still holds St Mary the Virgin, parts of which go back to the thirteenth century. Hayes station is the terminus of the Mid-Kent line into Charing Cross, and Station Approach is the parade where most of the village shops and the library gardens are.

Hayes Common is 79 hectares of heathland and acid grassland on the south side of the village, and dogs come back from it caked, then do a lap of the hall and lounge before anyone can stop them. We lift that trodden-in soil and the paw trails that follow it, along with the felt-tip and craft stains that turn up on stairs and landings in family houses. On the interwar estates the carpet is often a foam-backed twist or a wool loop that has greyed in the traffic lane, and a hot-water extraction clean brings the tone back without soaking the backing. One honest limit: where a pale carpet by a patio door has bleached in years of afternoon sun, cleaning removes the dirt but not the fading, and that lightened band stays after we have finished. Is parking a problem for the van?
Rarely on the estates. Most Hayes semis have their own drive or a wide verge, and the residential roads off Pickhurst Lane are not in a controlled parking zone, so we pull up close to the door. The tighter spot is the village core around Hayes Street and Station Approach, where we will find a bay and run the hose in.
Can you get a muddy dog off a light carpet?
Usually, yes. Common mud is soil and grass rather than dye, so hot-water extraction flushes it out of the pile and the traffic lanes it leaves. Cleaning lifts the dirt and any lingering doggy smell; the one thing to plan for is drying, especially on a thick wool carpet after a wet winter.
