The Hornsey Lane Bridge, dated 1897 on its arch, carries Hornsey Lane over Archway Road with a view down to St Paul’s and the City towers. Below it, London Carpet Cleaning cleans across Hillrise, N19, from the red-brick terraces of Whitehall Park to the Hornsey Lane Estate. Cleaning starts from £36 a room, and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Whitehall Park and the hill

Hillrise is the high ground below the Highgate to Hornsey ridge, and its streets were among the last in Islington to be built. The Whitehall Park estate was laid out by R. W. Hill from 1889: Whitehall Park and Gladsmuir Road were finished in 1891, Cressida Road in 1892 and Harberton Road in 1893. The terraces follow the contours of the hill in red brick, some with small Gothic turrets, and a few older Regency survivors stand on Hornsey Lane and Dresden Road. Islington made Whitehall Park a conservation area in 1969, and the Highgate Hill/Hornsey Lane conservation area followed in 1990.

The bridge is the landmark. It replaced a brick and stone bridge by John Nash, was finished in 1900 to a design by Sir Alexander Binnie for the London County Council, and has been Grade II listed since 1972. Roads like Cheverton Road, Sunnyside Road and Gladsmuir Road climb the slope in long terraced runs, most now split into upper and lower flats.

Not everything here is Victorian. The Hornsey Lane Estate opened in 1939, and more council housing followed near Hornsey Lane in the 1960s and 1970s, including Redwood Court in 1968 and the New Orleans estate in 1972 to 1974. So a single street can hold a turreted Victorian house and a council-built flat within sight of each other. Archway on the Northern line is the nearest tube, a short walk downhill, with Upper Holloway on the Overground and Crouch Hill both close by.

Terraced houses22.4%
Three bedrooms24.6%
Four or more bedrooms19.2%
Socially rented36.9%
Owned outright14.6%

The census groups Hillrise with the streets below it into one area, Archway East, so the figures cover Whitehall Park, the estates off Hornsey Lane and the roads down towards Archway. The houses that are still whole are big ones: 19.2% of homes have four or more bedrooms and another 24.6% have three, which is the Whitehall Park terrace with a stair to the second floor. Those houses carry wool or wool-blend carpet and a long run of stairs, and they get the gentler end of our kit.

The other side of the area is social housing, 36.9% of homes, much of it in the 1970s blocks. Very little was built between the wars (4.6%), which is why the 1939 Hornsey Lane Estate stands out. Owners who have paid off the mortgage hold 14.6% of homes, and those are the customers whose stair carpet has often been down for twenty years. One of the Whitehall Park houses kept whole, with four bedrooms, a through-lounge and the stairs, comes to £246.

Parking and the slope

Hillrise has some of the shortest parking controls in Islington. Whitehall Park, Cheverton Road and St John’s Way sit in the Hillrise West zone (Zone Z), and the streets east of Hornsey Rise, such as Grenville Road, in Hillrise East (Zone HE). Both are controlled from 10am to 2pm on weekdays only, with nothing at weekends. A job that starts at 2pm needs no permit at all, and on a Saturday the van parks in a resident bay outside your door.

The slope is the bigger factor. Many of these houses have steps up from the pavement to the front door, then a narrow stair to the upper flat, so we carry the machine in and run the hose rather than drag anything heavy over the treads. Ground-floor rooms on the low side of the hill can be slower to dry; open a back window before we start if you can.

What we find on the hillside

The hillside terraces give us a steady run of the same jobs. Steep, narrow staircases have gone grey and worn straight down the centre, where the whole house funnels onto one flight. Wool and wool-blend carpet in the older homes scrubs up well but needs a careful rinse. Lounge carpet in the conversion flats, often pale and laid over a single big room, shows pet accidents and coffee rings the moment they land. We lift the marks and knock back the traffic lanes, and the carpet dries over 6 to 7 hours.

The limit is the carpet itself. On a stair runner worn through at the nose of each tread, cleaning brings back the colour and clears the grime, but it cannot put back pile that years of footfall have flattened away. We say that on the day, before you spend a penny.

Hot-water extraction, upholstery and rugs

Most Hillrise bookings are hot-water extraction, which we explain in full on our steam carpet cleaning page, and it suits both the period wool and the newer flat carpets up here. For grubby sofa arms and the odd cushion ring, our upholstery cleaning works on fabric and leather alike, in the home and dry within hours. Loose rugs from the lounge are cleaned right there in the room, so our rug cleaning service vacuums, treats and shampoos them on the same visit. For the rest of Islington, the same fixed prices and the same team apply wherever you are.

Hillrise questions, from Whitehall Park to Archway

Which Hillrise streets do you cover, from Whitehall Park down to Archway?

All of N19, including Whitehall Park, Hornsey Rise, the streets off Hornsey Lane and Hazellville Road, and down toward Archway. We work the whole Hillrise side of the hill: Cheverton Road, Sunnyside Road, Bredgar Road, Gladsmuir Road and the rest, most of them long terraces split into conversion flats, plus the Hornsey Lane Estate blocks.

Parking is tight on these streets, is that a problem?

No. The narrow Victorian roads here sit inside Islington’s Hillrise zones, controlled from 10am to 2pm on weekdays, and we deal with that daily. We park as close as the bay allows, run our hose to your door, and where a flat is up a steep flight we carry the gear up ourselves. There is nothing for you to arrange beyond a space if you have one.

Can you get pet stains and odour out of a lounge carpet?

Usually, yes. A fresh accident on the floor responds well, and we treat both the visible mark and the smell at source, so it does not return as the carpet dries. Older set-in stains that have reached the underlay are harder, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic.

How long will carpets take to dry in a Hillrise conversion flat?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because our machines pull out far more moisture than a hired box ever will. A dense wool carpet, or a ground-floor room low on the slope below Hornsey Lane, can run a little longer, so open a window or two and the airflow finishes the job.

Our zone is only controlled from 10am to 2pm. Can we use that?

Yes, and it saves you a visitor voucher. Book an afternoon slot starting at 2pm and the van can sit in a resident bay outside with nothing to pay, since both Hillrise zones are free after 2pm on weekdays and all weekend. For a morning job we pay at the nearest bay until the controls lift.

My house is in the Whitehall Park Conservation Area. Does that change how you clean?

Not the method, but it tells us the age. These houses went up between 1889 and 1893, and many still have the original staircase with wool on the treads, so we clean low-moisture and keep the water off painted strings and balusters. The conservation rules cover the outside of the house; inside, the carpet is cleaned like any other good wool.

Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right, we come back and put it straight at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across this part of north London since 2009.

What our customers say in Hillrise.

★★★★★
Pet accident right in the middle of the lounge from our rescue dog, and the smell was the worst of it. He treated it properly and you genuinely cannot tell now, no mark and no odour. Reassuring about the whole thing too.

Steep stairs and the landing cleaned in our terrace up the hill. They were worn and grubby down the centre and now look so much fresher. Tidy from start to finish, no mess left behind.
Oluwaseun OgunbiyiWhitehall Park, N19 · Stairs & landing carpet

Two seater fabric sofa and a matching chair cleaned before Christmas. The arms were grubby and there was a coffee ring on one cushion that vanished. Polite, respectful in the home and left everything tidy.
Tendai MavhungaSunnyside Road, N19 · Sofa & upholstery cleaning

Bedroom carpets cleaned to a good standard before guests came. My only niggle is the chap was hard to get hold of beforehand, took a day to reply to my message. The cleaning itself was on time and thorough.

Tiled kitchen floor with grout that mopping never shifted. They scrubbed it right up and it looks much better. It took longer to dry than I was told and I had to keep the kids off it for a while, but the result was worth it and the price honest.
