Red Lion Square was laid out in 1684 by Nicholas Barbon, and today its mansion flats, like the flats over Sicilian Avenue’s colonnades, are nearly all reached by a flight of stairs or more. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Holborn, WC1 and WC2, on both sides of High Holborn since 2009. Prices are fixed and start at £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Where the legal quarter meets the West End

Holborn is the seam between the West End and the City, and its homes fill the gaps the legal profession left. Bedford Row is the set piece, a Georgian terrace where most front doors now belong to barristers’ chambers, while streets such as Great James Street keep the same brown brick and sash windows as actual homes. North of High Holborn you are in WC1: the mansion flats around Red Lion Square, which became a public garden in 1885, the flats above the shops on Lamb’s Conduit Street, and Sicilian Avenue, the Grade II listed Edwardian parade the Bedford Estate built between Southampton Row and Bloomsbury Way from 1906 to 1910.

South of High Holborn is WC2, where Kingsway meets Holborn station on the Central and Piccadilly lines, and Lincoln’s Inn Fields, laid out in the 1630s, opens out as the largest public square in London; its southern side is the borough line with Westminster. On the eastern fringe, the Bourne Estate off Portpool Lane is a run of Grade II listed tenement blocks built by the London County Council from 1905 to 1909 around courtyards of plane trees, later held up as a model for the council housing of Vienna. Chancery Lane station covers that end on the Central line. Almost everything we clean in Holborn is a flat, and almost every flat is up at least one flight of stairs, which shapes how we work here more than anything else.

What the census counts in Holborn

Flats over shops or in other converted buildings10.5%
Socially rented34.3%
Owner-occupied23.5%
Two-bedroom homes30.7%
Built before 190041.5%
Built since 200015.9%

This census area takes its name from Holborn, St Giles and the south of Bloomsbury, and it matches the WC1 and WC2 streets on this page well. One figure stands out for a carpet cleaner: 10.5% of homes are flats in commercial or other converted buildings, which in the census wording means over a shop, in an office building or in a former warehouse, school or church. Add the converted houses and the mansion blocks, and very few front doors here open straight onto a carpeted room at street level.

The stock is mixed in age. The VOA dates 41.5% of homes before 1900, but 15.9% are from 2000 or later. A third of households (34.3%) rent from the council or a housing association, and 23.5% own their flat. Two-bed homes are 30.7% of the total. A one-bed above the shops on Lamb’s Conduit Street, bedroom and lounge, comes to £79.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Camden 028) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Is working carpet any different to clean?

A little, and a lot of Holborn’s carpet is working carpet. Home studies take a hammering: office-grade twist under a desk chair, coffee rings, biro marks, and we clean plenty of them on Saturdays because the people who live here keep long weeks. Hallway runners in the narrow entrance halls collect grit and the occasional trodden-in chewing gum from the street door. Fabric sofas take the hit on takeaway nights; curry is the stain we are asked about most in these postcodes, and it responds well if we get to it within a few weeks.

Communal stairs in the converted buildings are the hardest graft. Where decades of feet have flattened and worn the pile on the stair nosings, a deep clean restores the colour but not the thickness. Worn pile stays worn, and we tell you on arrival what will lift and what is permanent.

CA-C, stairs and service yards

Holborn is Camden’s CA-C zone, Holborn and Covent Garden. Paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled from 8:30am to 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and resident permit bays are controlled round the clock, every day. Camden consulted in autumn 2025 on stretching the paid hours (up to 7am to 9pm on weekdays) and adding Sundays, so the plates may change. We book a pay-by-phone bay before we set off.

If your block has a service yard or loading bay, tell us and we use it; the price is the same either way. In the mansion blocks, give us the floor and the lift size, and in the converted buildings warn us about a tight turn on the stair. Flats whose windows open onto a light well dry more slowly, so we extract harder there and leave airflow advice. Move the desk chair and the cables off the study carpet before we arrive.

Carpet, sofa and rug cleaning either side of High Holborn

Most Holborn jobs use hot-water extraction, the method behind our steam carpet cleaning, because it pulls central London street grime out of twist and flat-weave pile alike. Our sofa and upholstery cleaning covers settees, armchairs and mattresses, and pairing it with a carpet clean saves you a second visit. For wool runners and antique pieces, rug cleaning is done on site, which beats hauling a 3-metre runner down the stairwell yourself, and an antique needs a photo sent first. We cover the rest of Camden daily, and neighbouring patches such as Chancery Lane and St Giles sit on the same rounds.

Things Holborn customers ask us

Which postcodes does your Holborn service cover?

Both halves of the district: WC1 north of High Holborn, taking in Red Lion Square, Lamb’s Conduit Street and Procter Street, and WC2 to the south around Kingsway, Great Queen Street and Lincoln’s Inn Fields. We also take bookings from the EC1N fringe by Hatton Garden and the Bourne Estate.

Do I need to sort parking before you arrive?

No. Holborn sits in Camden’s CA-C zone, where paid bays run Monday to Saturday until 6:30pm, and we plan our own pay-by-phone bay before we set off. If your block has a service yard or loading bay, mention it when you book and we will use it.

Do you handle end-of-tenancy carpet cleans in Holborn?

Every week. Rented flats around Holborn station turn over fast, and agents here expect carpets professionally cleaned at check-out. We work to inventory standard, give you a receipt for your agent or landlord, and can usually fit the clean between your move-out and the inspection.

How long will carpets take to dry in a Holborn flat?

dry within 6 to 7 hours for most rooms. Flats whose windows open onto a light well, away from the street, dry slower, so we extract harder and leave airflow advice. Mattresses hold more moisture and need the best part of a day, so book those for the morning.

Can you clean the carpet in a home office?

Yes, and in Holborn it is a regular job. Office-grade twist and carpet tiles take hot-water extraction well; we pre-treat the coffee rings and biro, then work the chair-castor track by hand before the machine goes over it. Clear the desk area of cables and bags, and a morning clean is dry by the evening, ready for the next working day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, and a good share of our Holborn bookings fall on a Saturday, when people who work long weeks are at home. Paid bays in CA-C are still controlled on Saturdays until 6:30pm, so we allow for that, and the price is the same as on a weekday.

Every visit carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated mark resurfaces within days, we come back and do it again free. Our technicians are DBS-checked and fully insured, and we have cleaned London homes since 2009.

Our cream fabric settee had a red wine ring from a dinner party. I'd given up on it. They got it out entirely and freshened the whole thing up. Genuinely better than I hoped.
