Holywell is a post-war council estate laid out on the old Holywell Farm land between the River Colne and Cassiobridge, with the first families moving in around 1954 under Watford’s 1951 development plan. The bulk of the housing is 1950s and 1960s semi-detached and short terraces, with Croxley View added a little later in the mid-sixties. Tolpits Lane runs the length of the estate as its spine, with Briar Road, Briden Close, Horseshoe Lane, Munden View and Chaffinch Lane branching off it. Many of the homes have been bought from the council over the years, so you get a mix of private owners, Watford Community Housing tenants and lets along the same road. There is no live station on the estate now. The old Watford West halt on Tolpits Lane closed long ago, and the nearest trains run from Watford High Street and Watford Junction, a bus ride up through West Watford.

Is parking a problem for the van on the estate?
Rarely. Holywell sits well outside the town-centre permit zones, so the estate roads are mostly unrestricted and many houses have a driveway or a verge to pull onto.
