Banister House opened on Homerton High Street in 1935, 160 council flats built by the old borough of Hackney to replace slums in Homerton Row and College Street, on the same street as Sutton House, the brick Tudor house put up for Sir Ralph Sadler in the 1530s. London Carpet Cleaning covers Homerton, E9, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A Tudor house, interwar blocks and Victorian terraces

Homerton holds three kinds of home on the same short walk. Streets such as Glyn Road and Kenton Road keep their Victorian terraces, two and three storeys of London brick with carpeted stairs and landings that have been down for years. Then come the council blocks of the 1930s and after: Banister House grew by another 235 flats on the old Homerton College site by 1960, and the London County Council’s Gascoyne Estate, which runs south towards South Hackney, includes the ten-storey Kingscroft Point, finished in 1967. Kingsmead, opened in 1937 with 17 five-storey blocks, sits out towards the marshes. The third strand is new-build, the blocks around the station and towards Hackney Wick, finished with pale fitted carpet that shows every footmark.

Sutton House is the reminder of how old this place is. Homerton station runs the Mildmay line of the Overground, west to Richmond and Clapham Junction and east to Stratford, so the flats near the platforms turn over with new tenants on a steady cycle. Hackney Marshes and the River Lee are a short walk past Marsh Hill, with Homerton University Hospital in the middle of it all.

Food stains and old pet marks

The job we are asked about most in Homerton is the food stain on the lounge carpet. This part of London cooks properly, and we lift the lot: palm oil from a pot of egusi, turmeric and curry from a takeaway that slipped, the chocolate and juice the school holidays leave on a fabric sofa. Oil and bright spice are the awkward ones, so we pre-treat and rinse them out; scrubbing only drives them deeper. In the estate flats around Banister House and Brooksby’s Walk the recurring work is the bedroom and hallway refresh; near the station, the end-of-tenancy clean.

An old pet stain that has soaked into the underlay, the cat’s regular spot by the radiator, is the one we cannot always promise in full. We clean the carpet face and treat the smell, and most of it lifts, but a mark that has gone through to the floor under the pile may stay faintly. We say so at the door.

How the census sees this side of Homerton

Homes in the census area the ONS calls Hackney Wick, which covers Homerton south of the railway (Hackney 018)
Homes that areShare
Flats in purpose-built blocks54.9%
Terraced houses20.5%
Semi-detached houses7.8%
Rented from the council or a housing association44.6%
Built 1945 to 197213.9%
Built 1973 to 199922.8%
Three bedrooms26.9%

The census splits Homerton between several neighbourhoods. This page’s point, on the Gascoyne side south of the railway, falls in the one it names Hackney Wick, so the figures describe the estate end of Homerton more than the High Street. More than half the homes (54.9%) are flats in purpose-built blocks, and 44.6% are rented from the council or a housing association. Yet houses are not rare: 20.5% are terraced and 7.8% semi-detached, and 26.9% of homes have three bedrooms.

That makes the family house with a staircase a regular booking here. For a three-bed house, the bedrooms, the lounge and one flight of stairs come to £192. The building dates point the same way: 13.9% of homes went up between 1945 and 1972 and 22.8% between 1973 and 1999, the decades of much of the council building here. In the newer houses we mostly find synthetic carpet, which takes a full hot rinse and dries well with the heating on low.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Hackney 018) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Three parking zones and the stadium days

Homerton is split between parking zones with different start times. Homerton High Street, Brooksby’s Walk and the hospital are in Zone N, controlled Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6.30pm, earlier than most of the borough. Banister House and the station are in Zone L, Monday to Friday from 8.30am. The Gascoyne side is in Zone Q, also from 8.30am on weekdays. Zones N and Q take extra controls on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park event days, so we check the London Stadium fixtures before booking a weekend job.

We pay for a bay and run the hose from the van, and in the tall blocks we bring the hand tools up by lift or stairs. Kingsmead Primary’s School Street closes Kingsmead Way and the surrounding meads to traffic from 8.30am to 9.30am and 3pm to 4pm on term-time weekdays, so Kingsmead jobs start after 9.30am. Tell us the block, the entrance and the floor when you book; on the big estates that saves the most time.

Carpet, sofa and rug work around Homerton

We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, which pulls grit and spilled food out of the base of the pile, with the water matched to the fibre: wool in the period terraces gets less moisture, a tough synthetic a deeper rinse. We also clean and condition sofas and leather suites, clean wool rugs through proper rug cleaning in the home, check a photo first for silk, and freshen mattresses. Bordering Homerton, we also cover Hackney Wick and Victoria Park. The rest of the borough is covered on our Hackney carpet cleaning page.

What Homerton customers ask

Do you cover all of Homerton, from Glyn Road to Marsh Hill?

Yes, the whole of E9 here, from Homerton High Street and the hospital across to Marsh Hill and the Hackney Wick edge. We have cleaned this corner of Hackney since 2009, so the team knows the terraces on Glyn Road and Kenton Road, the blocks of Banister House and the new flats by the station. There is no call-out fee wherever your road sits.

Can you park and get into the estate blocks here?

Usually, yes. Homerton is covered by Zones N, L and Q, all controlled on weekdays, with Zone N starting at 7.30am, so we plan a paid bay or a short hose run from the van when we book you in. For flats in Banister House and the other estates we carry the tools up, and we ask which entrance and floor you are on so there is no delay on the day.

Do you do end-of-tenancy carpet cleaning for the flats by the station?

We do, and it is a big part of the work around the Overground. We clean the carpets through, lift the everyday marks a check-out clerk looks for, and send a dated receipt for the inventory. Book it for the day before hand-back and the carpets are dry and the paperwork ready when the agent inspects.

How long will carpet take to dry in a Homerton flat or terrace?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract the water back out of the pile. The pale new-build carpet by the station dries quickly, and wool on the older terrace stairs is cleaned with less water so it dries safely. With a window open, the room is back in use the same day.

Does parking change on London Stadium event days?

It does on the eastern side. Zones N and Q, which cover the High Street and the Gascoyne side, carry extra controls on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park event days, and the roads fill early. We look at the fixture list when you book, and if your date clashes with an event we either come earlier or suggest another day. Zone L, around the station, is not one of the event-day zones.

My block has no lift. Does that cost more?

No. Lift or no lift, the price is the same, and Kingsmead’s 1937 blocks run to five storeys, so we are used to the climb. The machine stays in the van and only the hose and hand tools come up, so a top-floor flat costs exactly what a ground-floor one does. Give us the floor number when you book so we bring enough hose.

Every clean in Homerton is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a spot comes back, so do we, at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets across Hackney since 2009.

What our customers say in Homerton.

★★★★★
Cooked a big pot of egusi for a family gathering and somehow ended up with a splatter trail across the lounge carpet, bright orange palm oil and all. I scrubbed it and made it worse. They got every bit out and the carpet smells lovely now. Saved me before all the relatives arrived.

Three seater fabric sofa that the grandkids had decorated with chocolate and juice over the school holidays. Looks brand new again. The man was respectful and took his shoes off without being asked.

Needed the bedsit carpets done for the end of tenancy. Quick, fairly priced and the agent signed off the deposit with no quibbles. Would use again.

Our brown leather suite had gone dull and a bit sticky on the headrests. They cleaned and conditioned it and it feels supple again, smells good too. Took them a little longer than booked because traffic round Homerton High Street held him up, but he rang ahead to warn me which I appreciated.

Had the bedroom and hallway done on our estate flat. Pleased with how fresh they look, real difference in the bedroom especially. There was a faint pet stain near the radiator that didn't come out fully, the cat's old spot, but everything else is grand. Friendly service.
