The cottage at 1 Bridge Road is all that survives of Hunton Bridge Wharf, the coal wharf that once stood beside the Grand Union Canal. Around it, the terraced cottages of Bridge Road and Old Mill Road make up the old core of Hunton Bridge, WD4, a conservation area since 1984. London Carpet Cleaning cleans here from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Canal cottages and the Langleybury estate
Hunton Bridge is a small settlement in the Gade valley, inside Abbots Langley parish in Three Rivers, squeezed between junctions 19 and 20 of the M25. It began where the old coaching road crossed the River Gade. The oldest building, Kings Lodge, goes back to the late 15th century, and the Kings Head, the old coaching inn, is listed too. Most of the houses came later, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the canal, which opened through the valley in 1800, and with the Langleybury estate after William Jones Loyd bought it in 1856. Some still have the estate’s porches, timber-framed under slate, and the walls run from early red brick to Victorian yellow stock.
The land north of Bridge Road was a brewery from the late 18th century until about 1948, and later the Carlsberg Tetley site, which has since been rebuilt as housing. The A41 dual carriageway and the canal run side by side through the conservation area, so St Paul’s Church and its vicarage sit apart from the cottages, out in open country on the far side. Climbing away from the water, Old Mill Road and Hunton Bridge Hill carry post-war and newer family homes. The housing is mixed, so we carry kit for everything from a tight cottage stair to a large modern lounge.
What do the census figures say about Hunton Bridge?
| Homes that are | Share |

| Terraced houses | 10.4% |
| Purpose-built flats | 10.7% |
| Rented privately | 9.2% |
| Rented from a council or housing association | 10.2% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 30.1% |
| Built since 2000 | 13.5% |
Hunton Bridge is too small to have census figures of its own. It sits in the Gade Valley corner of a large neighbourhood the ONS calls Croxley North & Sarratt, which also covers Sarratt, its hamlets and the north side of Croxley Green, so read these numbers as the wider valley and plateau. They still match the village. Houses make up 86.7% of homes, which means stairs on almost every job. Terraces are only 10.4%, and in Hunton Bridge those are mostly the canal and estate cottages, where the stairs are narrow and the hall is short.
Renting is low, 9.2% private and 10.2% social, so most of our work here is for owners. The post-war years are the biggest building period at 30.1%, and 13.5% of homes have gone up since 2000, which fits the newer houses on the old brewery land and up the hill. Those newer homes usually have a synthetic carpet that comes up fast. Purpose-built flats are 10.7% of homes; for one of those with two bedrooms and a living room, the price is £115.

Builders’ dust, dark landings and damp valley air
The standout local job is cleaning after building work. Plenty of these homes have been extended, and fine plaster and brick dust works deep into the pile of a lounge or dining room and turns a pale carpet grey. A hot-water extraction clean lifts it, and the room dries faster than people expect. We also get a steady run of fabric and leather sofas, hallway rugs after a spill, and stairs-and-landing jobs where the centre of the flight has gone dark.
The water shapes the drying. The canal and the Gade keep the air damp along the valley floor, so ground-floor rooms near the water hold moisture, and a carpet on a solid cottage floor dries slower than one in a modern house. A mattress soaked by a loft or pipe leak can take longer still. We can usually shift a watermark, but on a badly saturated mattress a deep stain may not come fully clean, and we tell you that before we start.
Parking near the canal and the station
Hunton Bridge has no permit parking. The nearest zone is Kings Langley RG, which Three Rivers runs on Station Road (numbers 32 to 92), Roman Gardens and Home Park Cottages by Kings Langley station. Permit holders only can use the bays there from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, so if you live on that stretch we will ask where the van can stand and may need a visitor voucher.
In the village itself most homes have a drive or quiet kerbside space. Bridge Road is the awkward one, on a slope with the cottages set at varying distances from the road, so the van stops where it is safe and the hose runs along the pavement. Lift rugs off the hall floor and clear the stairs before we come, and on a cottage stair take down anything hanging on the banister.

Carpets, sofas and rugs from one van
Most bookings are hot-water extraction carpet cleaning, which suits both the wool carpets in the period cottages and the synthetic pile in the newer homes up the hill. We also clean fabric and leather upholstery, from a tired settee to an oxblood leather two-seater that needs feeding and reviving, and we offer specialist rug cleaning in the home, with a photo first for anything too precious to risk on site. The same van and the same prices cover Kings Langley a mile north, Chipperfield to the west, and the rest of north-west London through our Harrow hub.
Hunton Bridge questions
Do you cover all of the WD4 part of Hunton Bridge?
Yes. We cover the whole village, from the canal-side homes on Bridge Road and the cottage at the old wharf, up Old Mill Road and Hunton Bridge Hill, out to St Paul’s Church on Langleybury Lane, and on toward Langleybury and the Kings Langley boundary. WD4 8 is well inside our patch and there is no surcharge for crossing the county line.
Is parking a problem for your van in the village?
Rarely. Hunton Bridge has no controlled parking zone, so most homes have a drive or quiet kerbside space and we park close to the door. The lanes near the canal bridge and on Hunton Bridge Hill are narrow, so if access is tight let us know when you book and we will plan the gear we bring.
How long does a wool carpet in an older cottage take to dry?
Usually 6 to 7 hours to dry, and heavy furniture stays off the pile until then. Wool holds a little more water than synthetic, and a ground-floor room near the Gade can run slower, so we leave the pile damp but not wet and suggest opening a window or running the heating low.
Can you get builders’ dust out of a carpet after an extension?
Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs here. Fine plaster and brick dust binds into the fibres and a vacuum alone will not shift it, so we pre-treat and then use hot-water extraction to flush it out. Most greyed-out lounges and dining rooms come back close to their original colour in a single visit.
We live on Station Road in the permit zone. How do you park?
The Kings Langley RG bays are for permit holders from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Three Rivers sells residents visitor vouchers in books of ten, so the simplest answer is to put one in our windscreen for the morning. If you have a drive, we use that. A Saturday booking avoids the restriction altogether.
Our cottage has an estate porch and a narrow hall. Will the machine fit?
It does not need to come in. The machine stays in the van and only the hose and a hand tool come through the door, so a small porch and a short, tight hall are no trouble. We lay protection on the threshold, work from the top of the stairs down, and keep the hose clear of the old door frames.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot lifts and returns, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs around Hunton Bridge and the rest of WD4 since 2009.
