Island Gardens was a reed-bed until 1895, when the London County Council planted it with trees to hide the island’s factories from the Naval College across the water. The houses behind it are mostly post-war and 1980s, with garden-estate cottages from the 1920s a few streets inland. London Carpet Cleaning works across Island Gardens, E14, from £36 a room, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours at a fixed price.

The view the park was made to keep
Island Gardens sits at the very southern tip of the Isle of Dogs, where the river bends round towards Greenwich. As early as 1848 a medical inspector at Greenwich Hospital argued that the riverside opposite should be kept clear. The hospital’s commissioners bought the strip from William Cubitt, and in 1895 John Sexby of the LCC parks department laid it out as gardens. The park is listed, it sits in the buffer zone of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, and Tower Hamlets made the surrounding streets a conservation area in March 1971.
The domed rotunda in the park is the northern entrance to the Greenwich foot tunnel, built between 1896 and 1902 and Grade II listed. Island Gardens DLR, once the terminus of the whole network, was rebuilt underground and reopened on 20 November 1999, one of only four DLR stations entirely below ground, one stop south of Mudchute and one north of Cutty Sark. By the water, the Ferry House pub probably dates from the 17th century, from the days of the Greenwich ferry, and 58 to 60 Ferry Street, a riverside villa built in stages from 1830, is the oldest house in the conservation area.
Riverside houses and 1920s cottages
Victorian terraces once packed the land behind the riverside here. War damage took many of them, and the last were pulled down in the late 1960s, when George Green School and new estates took their place. Most of what stands now is residential from the late 1970s onwards: the private houses along Saunders Ness Road, schemes such as Invicta Wharf from the 1980s and 1990s, and wharf conversions like Cumberland Mills on the old oil-mill sites.
A few streets inland are the garden estates. The Manchester Grove Estate, on Manchester Grove and the southern end of East Ferry Road, was built in 1925 and 1926 for Poplar Borough Council, with pebble-dashed fronts and tiled roofs, and six of its houses were rebuilt in the 1950s after war damage. Just north is the Chapel House conservation area, where neo-Georgian cottages went up along Chapel House Street and Thermopylae Gate in 1920 and 1921. Most of our work here is in the houses and low blocks between Manchester Road and the water.
Gas-heated family homes, in figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 12.9% |
| Semi-detached houses | 6.7% |
| Social rented | 36.5% |
| Three bedrooms | 23.3% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 29.1% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 44.5% |
| Heated by mains gas only | 64.4% |
Confusingly, the census area that covers Island Gardens is the one the ONS calls Mudchute; the farm itself sits in the next area north. The figures show the most settled corner of the island. Houses make up a fifth of homes, with 12.9% terraced and 6.7% semi-detached, and almost a quarter of homes (23.3%) have three bedrooms. More than a third of households (36.5%) rent from the council or a housing association, the families in the post-war estates.
The build dates tell the same story as the streets. Most of the stock is older than the towers up the road: 29.1% went up between 1945 and 1972 and 44.5% between 1973 and 1999, the estates and then the riverside houses. Stairs are a big part of the work here. For three bedrooms, a living room and one flight in a house near the park, the bill is £192. Nearly two homes in three (64.4%) run on mains gas, so a radiator on low after the clean helps the carpet dry on time.

Parking at the southern tip
Island Gardens falls in parking zone D2, where on-street bays are controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and free outside those hours. We find a bay or a short load-in nearby, from Saunders Ness Road to the Chapel House cottages. Some riverside blocks have gated or undercroft parking; tell us when you book and we will use a visitor space if there is one.
The garden-estate houses have small front gardens and narrow halls, so we bring the hose to the front door and work in from there. In the maisonettes, one flight takes most of the traffic; clear it before we arrive and we will start on it.
Worn stair carpet and pet marks
Two patterns come up again and again. The first is staircases in the 1970s maisonettes and the 1920s cottages, where one flight of carpet takes most of the daily traffic and goes flat and grey down the middle long before the bedrooms do. We work those tread by tread and take care along the skirtings, since these are narrow halls and the walls are close. The second is pet and family marks on lounge carpet, often right by the big front windows that face the river, where a dog has its spot or a rug has caught a children’s party.
One limit. On wool and wool-mix carpets walked flat for years, hot-water extraction lifts the dirt and most marks, but it will not raise pile that is already crushed and worn to the backing. We say so on the day, and we will not promise a worn stair back to new.
Our services in Island Gardens
For carpets we use hot-water extraction, which rinses the pile and pulls the dirt back out so the carpet is only damp, not soaked, and dry within 6 to 7 hours. We clean fabric sofas, armchairs and headboards as part of our upholstery cleaning, and tired three-seaters are a regular booking round here. Larger or more delicate rugs are cleaned in the home as proper rug cleaning, with a photo first for any that are fragile. We cover the rest of Tower Hamlets too, and the nearby river side at Custom House across the Lower Lea.
Island Gardens: your questions
Which southern Isle of Dogs streets around Island Gardens do you cover?
All of the southern Isle of Dogs round Island Gardens: Saunders Ness Road, Ferry Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Grove, Glengall Grove, Spindrift Avenue, Parkside and the Chapel House cottages. We also reach Cubitt Town, Mudchute and the rest of the island, so if your road sits between the park by the foot tunnel and Westferry Road, we will come to you.
Is parking a problem for the van near Island Gardens?
The island is zone D, and Island Gardens is in D2, so bays are controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and free outside those hours. We are used to it and will sort a bay or a short load-in nearby. Tell us if your block has gated or undercroft parking when you book.
Do you handle pet stains and odours?
Yes, and they are common in the riverside lounges here. An enzyme treatment goes down through the pile into the backing to break up what causes the smell, and the extraction rinses it away. Older or repeated accidents can need a second pass, which we will tell you about before starting.
How long will carpets take to dry in an Island Gardens wharf conversion?
Usually 6 to 7 hours, because extraction leaves the pile damp, never wet. Ground-floor flats and converted wharf units such as Cumberland Mills can hold a little more moisture near the water, so on a still day we open a window or leave a fan running, and until the carpet is dry we ask for socks, not shoes, on it.
Can you clean a rug in my Island Gardens flat?
Yes. A rug up to 3m² starts from £35, and we clean it in the flat during the visit: vacuumed, any marks pre-treated, then shampooed and rinsed by hot-water extraction. If we are cleaning your carpets the same day, the rug is done on the same visit. For a wool rug from a riverside lounge, or anything silk or old, send a photo first so we can say whether it is safe to clean on site.
Does a DLR closure affect our booking?
No. We come by van, not by train, so a DLR closure or engineering works on the Lewisham branch make no difference to us. We drive down Manchester Road or Westferry Road to the southern tip like any other day. The one local snag is the Blue Bridge lifting for a ship further north, and we allow time for that.
If a treated area is not right, our re-clean guarantee means we come back for it at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets and upholstery across the Isle of Dogs and the wider London boroughs since 2009.
