Pelham Crescent went up to George Basevi’s designs from 1833, and in 1840 he drew the plan for Thurloe Square, whose houses were mostly built in the six years that followed. London Carpet Cleaning cleans those terraces, the converted mews behind them and the mansion flats of Kensington, SW7. A room costs from £36, and it takes up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, so a morning clean is ready by the evening.

Basevi’s squares and the museum quarter
The SW7 end of Kensington is the museum quarter, and its housing matches the grandeur. Basevi was surveyor to the Alexander estate, and his plan for Thurloe Square, between Pelham Street and the Old Brompton Road, was built almost as drawn, with 56 houses in the square when it was finished, and the estate around it went up mostly between 1840 and 1846. On the Smith’s Charity land next door he designed the curve of Pelham Crescent. Six-storey white stucco fronts line Queen’s Gate to the west. Behind the main terraces sit converted mews, former coach houses on cobbled lanes, and much of the rest is flats: mansion blocks and grand terrace conversions carved into raised-ground, upper and lower-ground apartments.
South Kensington station sits at the centre of it, on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines, with the tiled subway running under Exhibition Road to the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Imperial College and the Royal Albert Hall are a short walk north. South of the station the scale changes again. Along Sloane Avenue stand big interwar blocks of flats: Sloane Avenue Mansions, finished in 1933, Cranmer Court of 1934 and 1935, nine storeys high and one of the largest blocks in London, Nell Gwynn House of 1937, and Chelsea Cloisters, ten storeys, built in 1937 and 1938.
South Kensington homes in the census
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in purpose-built blocks | 73.8% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 36.4% |
| Built before 1900 | 40.5% |
| Rented privately | 40.4% |
| One-bedroom homes | 39.1% |
| Heated by electricity only | 14.7% |
The station falls in the census area the ONS calls Brompton, which runs from Thurloe Square and Pelham Street south to Sloane Avenue. That explains a mixed set of figures. The Victorian squares account for the 40.5% of homes built before 1900, while the Sloane Avenue blocks account for most of the 36.4% built between the wars. Taken together, 73.8% of homes are flats in purpose-built blocks, and the usual flat is small: 39.1% have one bedroom. A one-bed flat, bedroom and sitting room, costs £79.
Private tenants rent 40.4% of homes, so short lets and end-of-tenancy cleans are a large share of our SW7 work. Heating matters for drying here: 14.7% of homes are heated by electricity alone. A carpet in a room that is cool by afternoon dries more slowly, so we take extra passes and ask for a window on the latch.

Parking and access around the station
The streets around Thurloe Place, Pelham Street and the squares south of the station have single yellow lines controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, so Saturday is no easier than a weekday; Sunday is, because single yellow lines do not apply and pay-by-phone parking is free. The borough issues no visitor vouchers, so we park in a pay-by-phone bay and pay for it. Exhibition Road is a poor bet: its 18 residents’ bays near the Science Museum are marked with metal studs in the paving and reserved for permit holders.
The terraces have no driveways and the mews lanes are narrow, so we travel light and carry the machine to the door. In the large blocks, tell us the block, the floor and the flat number, and whether the porters need notice. Lower-ground flats in the stucco conversions are reached down the area steps; tell us if your door is there.
Wool runners, Persian rugs and basement flats
The work splits between period wool and proper rugs. The terrace houses and older conversions tend to have wool carpet and stair runners over deep staircases, which hold dirt in the pile and need a careful, low-moisture clean. Over parquet and board floors sit the rugs, and we clean a lot of Persian and wool pieces in the room, the kind laid in a sitting room that want attention before a family occasion, with a photo first for anything very old. Spills on dining-room carpet, red wine and food after a dinner, are a regular call, and so are old pet stains in a flat someone has just moved into.
Lower-ground and basement flats, of which SW7 has plenty, have less airflow and cooler rooms, so a carpet down there can stay damp for several hours longer than the same job upstairs. We leave the air moving, but in a low basement room drying takes patience.
South Kensington is the core of this patch and where most of our calls land, but it runs on through the garden squares, Onslow Square, Onslow Gardens and Sumner Place, to the mansion flats around Gloucester Road and Stanhope Gardens. Two of the squares we work, Thurloe Square and Onslow Gardens, keep private communal gardens for residents only.

Three services for SW7 homes
We bring the same three services to every SW7 address. Our hot-water carpet cleaning lifts ground-in dirt from wool and stair runners and leaves the pile dry within 6 to 7 hours. For sofas, settees and dining chairs, our upholstery cleaning covers fabric and leather, with conditioning for leather that has gone dull or sticky at the headrest. Larger and more delicate pieces go through our rug cleaning service, cleaned in the room itself, with a photo sent first for the delicate ones. For the rest of the borough, see our work across Kensington and Chelsea, and we also cover nearby Gloucester Road.
SW7 questions from customers
Which Kensington streets do you cover, from Queen’s Gate to Gloucester Road?
We cover all of SW7: South Kensington, Queen’s Gate, Cornwall Gardens, the Onslow and Thurloe squares, Stanhope Gardens, Manson Place, Elvaston Place and the streets around Gloucester Road and Exhibition Road. We also reach the neighbouring SW3, SW5 and SW10 parts of Kensington and Chelsea at the same fixed prices, mews houses and mansion flats alike.
Where do you park for a job in SW7?
Kensington and Chelsea is controlled parking throughout, so we use a pay-by-phone bay near the address and load from there; on a single yellow line we may stop to unload heavy kit where loading is allowed. Tell us the street when you book and we plan the nearest spot.
Can you clean a large Persian or wool rug from a sitting room?
Yes, and it is one of our most common SW7 jobs. We vacuum the rug, pre-treat the marks and clean it in your sitting room by hot-water extraction, and colours that have gone flat usually come back deeper. For a silk or antique piece, send a photo first and we will say whether it is safe to clean on site.
How long will carpet in a Kensington lower-ground flat take to dry?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because our method puts down far less water than a soak-and-extract. Upholstery, especially a fabric sofa, takes a little longer, so plan not to sit on it the same evening. In a cooler lower-ground flat in one of the stucco conversions allow extra time, and open a window if you can.
Do you clean in the big 1930s blocks on Sloane Avenue?
Yes, for owners, tenants and letting agents alike. Tell us the block, the floor and the flat number, and whether the building needs notice for contractors; some blocks set hours for work. The lift does the carrying, so the floor makes no difference to the price, and a one-bed flat with its sitting room is £79.
Thurloe Square houses are tall. Do you charge for every flight?
We charge each flight of stairs from £41, so a tall house costs more on the stairs than a flat does, and the stairs in these houses take the heaviest traffic and the most time. Three bedrooms, the sitting room and one flight come to £192, and we quote the extra flights before we start, so there are no surprises.
Our re-clean guarantee comes with every job: if a treated area has not come up when it dries, we return and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across Kensington and the rest of the capital since 2009.
