Lady Margaret Road runs north from the Uxbridge Road for more than two kilometres, lined with the bay-fronted semis and terraces that filled this side of Southall between the wars. London Carpet Cleaning has worked in Lady Margaret, UB1, since 2009, cleaning carpets, sofas and rugs from £36 a room, and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Interwar semis along a two-kilometre road
Lady Margaret is the grid of residential streets wrapped around Lady Margaret Road, in the Dormers Wells corner of Southall. The stock is mostly interwar: long runs of bay-fronted terraces and semis with front gardens, built when this edge of Southall filled in between the wars. The road starts at the Broadway end, by the Uxbridge Road, and runs north past Lady Margaret Primary School (UB1 2NH) towards Kenilworth Gardens. These are family houses, often with three good bedrooms and stairs that take the brunt of a busy household.
The nearest station is Southall, about a kilometre south of the middle of the road. It has been on the line since 1839, its signs are in English and Punjabi, and since its rebuild opened in August 2021 it has had step-free access to every platform, with Elizabeth line trains east into London and west to Heathrow. Southall Broadway, with its jewellers and sari shops, is at the bottom of the road.
The floors reflect the houses. We find a lot of fitted carpet on stairs, landings and bedrooms, with the front rooms often carrying a good wool or wool-mix that has been down a while. Larger rugs turn up in the lounges too, sometimes patterned pieces that need a proper measure before any quote stands.
What does the census say about Lady Margaret?
| Homes | Share |
|---|---|
| Semi-detached houses | 36.0% |
| Terraced houses | 21.3% |
| Three bedrooms | 37.1% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 26.8% |
| Owned outright | 29.1% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 53.9% |
The ONS groups these streets into a neighbourhood it calls Southall Park (Ealing 023), and the figures match what we see from the van. More than half of all homes (53.9%) were built between 1919 and 1944. The semi is the commonest home at 36.0%, ahead of terraces at 21.3%, and close to two-thirds of homes are houses. Three-bedroom homes are the biggest group (37.1%), and over a quarter have four or more (26.8%), which in these streets usually means a loft conversion or a back extension.
Houses mean stairs, and stairs are where the wear shows first. For a typical three-bed semi here, with the knocked-through lounge and the flight of stairs, the total is £210. Many owners have been in the same house a long time; 29.1% of homes are owned outright, and a good wool carpet in a front room may be twenty years old and worth looking after. Only 2.0% of homes have no central heating, so drying is rarely a problem.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Ealing 023) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Festivals, family cooking and busy stairs
Two things come up again and again here. The first is festival cleaning: a steady run of bookings before Diwali and before family functions, when the downstairs carpet wants to look its best for the photos and the relatives. The second is kitchen-to-carpet traffic. Homes that cook from scratch get the odd turmeric splash, cooking-oil marks down a sofa arm, and the yellow tint haldi leaves when it walks through on socks. Stairs take a hammering with everyone in and out, and the worn middle of the tread is the hardest-working part of the house.
We lift a great deal of this, and on most jobs the difference is obvious. There is a limit, though: an old turmeric or henna mark set into a pale wool pile can leave a faint shadow once it dries, because the dye has bonded with the fibre. We tell you on the day if we think a stain will lift mostly and not fully, before we start, so there are no surprises.
Getting to the door: Zone L, the school and the van
The southern half of Lady Margaret Road, numbers 1 to 121 on the west side and 2 to 108 on the east, is in Ealing’s Zone L, Southall, along with Townsend Road, Tudor Road, Dane Road and Beaconsfield Road. Zone L has long hours: Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm, and Sunday from 2pm to 8pm. On those streets we need a visitor permit or a paid bay, so have one ready if you can, or tell us and we will sort it.
Further north, towards the school, check the signs on your stretch when you book. Lady Margaret Primary sits on the road itself, so we plan to arrive once the morning school run has cleared. Many of the semis have a front drive, and if yours is clear the van can sit on it with the hose straight through the front door. Move shoes and coats out of the hall and anything stored under the stairs, and we can start on the stairs at once.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in Lady Margaret?
We give you a fixed figure before the visit and charge nothing just for turning up, at the same rates we use in every borough we cover.
- Carpet, per bedroom, from £36
- Living room, from £43
- Through-lounge, from £61
- Stairs, one flight, from £41
- Two-seater sofa, from £57
- Rug up to 3m², from £35
A rug price firms up once we measure it properly at the door, so a big lounge piece can come in above the phone figure. Get a free quote, or call us on 020 8077 8090.
Our services for Lady Margaret homes
Most local jobs are our hot-water extraction work, the deep steam carpet cleaning that pulls grime and grease up out of the pile. The three-piece suites and settees that get cooking marks go through our upholstery cleaning, fibre-tested first so a wool sofa is treated as wool. Bigger or precious rugs get rug cleaning in the room, with the floor cleared and a photo first for a precious one, which suits the heavy patterned pieces common in Lady Margaret front rooms. If you are over towards Dormers Wells or down into Southall proper, that is the same round for us, and we cover the rest of Ealing on the same fixed prices.
Lady Margaret and Dormers Wells: your questions
Which streets around Lady Margaret Road and Dormers Wells do you cover?
All of the UB1 streets in the Lady Margaret and Dormers Wells block: Lady Margaret Road itself, plus Allenby, Townsend, Dane, Tudor and Beaconsfield Road, Selby Gardens and the turnings between them. We carry on into central Southall and across the rest of Ealing, so a booking here is no different to one a few streets over.
Is parking a problem for you on these roads?
The lower half of Lady Margaret Road is inside Ealing’s Zone L, controlled from 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, so the kerb can be tight in the day. It rarely holds us up. The van needs a spot close enough to run the hose in, so it is worth a quick word when you book about where we are likely to pull up.
Can you get carpets and sofas ready in time for Diwali or a function?
Yes, and a lot of our Lady Margaret work is exactly that. Book a few days ahead in the run-up to Diwali or a christening and we will get the downstairs rooms and the main settee done with time to spare. Carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, so the room is usable again the same day for the photos.
How long until I can put the furniture back?
Carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours and fully dry within the day. A dense wool pile or a chilly room with the windows shut can take the full day, so on a heavy bedroom or landing job it is sensible to leave the furniture off and a window cracked until evening.
Is the whole of Lady Margaret Road in the parking zone?
No. Zone L covers the southern half only, numbers 1 to 121 and 2 to 108, and it runs late: 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm to 8pm on Sundays. Further up the road, towards the primary school and Kenilworth Gardens, the signs are different, so tell us your house number when you book and we will check before the day.
My house has a back extension. How do you price the extra room?
By size and use. A knocked-through front and back room is priced as a through-lounge, from £61. A rear extension used as a family room is usually priced as a living room, from £43, and a loft bedroom as a bedroom, from £36. If you give us rough measurements on the phone, the quote you get is the price you pay.
Our re-clean guarantee covers every job: if a spot we treated is not right, we come back and put it straight at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Southall and Ealing since 2009.
