What Lessness Heath homes are like
Lessness Heath is the old common at the top of Belvedere, the eastern end of the narrow ridge that runs from Lesnes Abbey out towards Erith, with views towards Canary Wharf on a clear day. The village grew up in the triangle between Woolwich Road, Nuxley Road and Albert Road, and locals still call the Nuxley Road shopping stretch the Village. All Saints’ Church has stood at its tip since 1853.
The housing tells the story of the hill. Around the Village the stock is late Victorian and Edwardian: bay-fronted terraces on the side streets, plus the larger villas along Woolwich Road and Gloucester Road that earned the Woolwich Road Conservation Area its designation in 1992. Plenty of those villas were divided into flats in the 1960s, so one front door can hide three sets of carpets. The 1880s Belvedere police station on the same stretch is still standing, now the local driving test centre. Erith Road, the old heath path along the eastern edge of the ridge, runs past Lessness Heath Primary School with 1930s semis either side, and Picardy Road drops steeply down to Belvedere station, opened in 1859 on the North Kent line, where Southeastern trains run to Cannon Street via Greenwich. Lower Belvedere, around the station, is flatter, more mixed and more industrial.
