Solid 1930s mid-terraces run along Ewell Road, with semi-detached and detached family houses on Ditton Hill Road and Sugden Road and a Victorian church by George Edmund Street on Church Road. London Carpet Cleaning has worked in Long Ditton, KT6, just over the boundary in Elmbridge, since 2009. It costs from £36 a room, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A Surrey village with a Surbiton address
Long Ditton is in the Surrey borough of Elmbridge, on the boundary with Kingston, though its post town is Surbiton, which is why so many addresses here look like London ones. It is a long, narrow parish that runs from the Thames at Portsmouth Road, where the riverbank is private, south to Ditton Hill and the A3 in its cutting. The South West Main Line cuts the village in two. The old centre is St Mary’s: the medieval church was replaced in brick in 1778, and the present church, designed by Street, went up beside it in 1880. Both the church and the remains of the 1778 building are Grade II listed, and in November 1994 Elmbridge drew the Long Ditton conservation area round them, taking in the churchyard and the locally listed Manor House as well.
The housing is mixed and mostly owned: 1930s mid-terraces along Ewell Road, semis and detached family houses on roads like Ditton Hill Road and Sugden Road, and a smaller number of flats and newer infill. Most homes have a drive or front garden. The nearest trains are at Thames Ditton, on the Hampton Court branch with two an hour each way, and Hinchley Wood on the New Guildford line; Surbiton station, on the main line, is just over the boundary. A fair few houses near those stations change hands or tenants and want a carpet handed back fresh.
The job we are asked about most is the pale lounge carpet that has absorbed daily life. Our Long Ditton reviews read like our job sheets: a coffee ring and a muddy patch by the back door before a family party, dog hair worked into a fabric two-seater, a grandchild’s felt-tip, a sitting-room rug cleaned in time for a celebration. So many homes back onto gardens or the riverside path that mud and the odd pet accident are the steady work, on carpets and sofas alike. The soil does not help. Long Ditton sits mostly on London clay, with Thames alluvium at the river end, and the fine dark mud off the green and the Thames path works into the base of a pale pile long before the traffic lanes look worn. We pre-treat it and lift the bulk, and a fresh patch comes up well. A mark ground into light wool over a whole winter we can usually lighten, though not always remove, and we tell you which at the door.
Long Ditton homes by type and age
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Detached houses | 27.4% |
| Semi-detached houses | 27.5% |
| Terraced houses | 27.9% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 42.1% |
| Built before 1919 | 23.9% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 22.0% |
| Rented from a housing association or council | 10.8% |
The three house types come out almost dead level, detached 27.4%, semis 27.5% and terraces 27.9%, so on any week we are in all of them. The ages are spread just as evenly. Nearly a quarter of homes (23.9%) were built before 1919, and 17.8% before 1900; then come roughly equal slices from the inter-war years, the post-war decades (22.0% from 1945 to 1972) and the late twentieth century. That range changes the method room by room. Wool on an old staircase gets less water and more passes; a synthetic carpet in a 1980s or 1990s house can take a hotter, deeper rinse.
Many of these homes are big: 42.1% have four or more bedrooms. A four-bed detached house off Ditton Hill Road, with its through-lounge and one flight of stairs, comes to £246. About one home in ten (10.8%) is rented from a housing association or the council, and private renting is 12.3%, so move-out cleans exist but owners make most of the bookings. Only 0.8% of homes lack central heating, and the stairs are dry to walk on well before evening.

Parking and access in Long Ditton
Long Ditton is in Surrey, so on-street parking is run by Surrey County Council, not by Kingston, and none of Kingston’s zones or permits apply here. In practice we rarely need the street: most houses have a drive or a wide front garden, and the van parks on it or at the kerb outside. The tighter streets are the ones nearest Thames Ditton and Surbiton stations, where commuters fill the kerbs on weekdays; there we bring a long hose run and work from wherever we can stop.
The railway splits the village, and the A3 runs along the southern edge, so tell us which side of the line you are on and we will route the van round the bridges and avoid the A3 at rush hour. If you are in one of the flats at the Portsmouth Road end, give us any gate code or visitor bay number when you book. Before we come, move shoes and coats off the stairs and pick up anything small off the lounge floor.

Carpets, sofas and rugs we clean here
We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, which pulls the grit out of the base of the pile, and we match the water to the fibre: a wool carpet gets less moisture, a tough synthetic a deeper hot rinse. We also clean sofas and armchairs in the home, and we clean wool and large rugs in the room with proper rug cleaning, asking for a photo first if a piece is silk. Long Ditton sits on the edge of our patch, with Hook and Chessington to the south-east across the A3; for the rest of the borough next door, see our Kingston carpet cleaning page.
What Long Ditton customers ask
Do you cover all of Long Ditton, from Portsmouth Road to Ditton Hill?
Yes, the whole village, from Portsmouth Road and the riverside down through Ewell Road and Ditton Hill Road to St Mary’s Church, the green and the Recreation Ground. We are a London firm working just over the Surrey boundary, and we have cleaned this corner of KT6 since 2009. There is no call-out fee wherever your road is.
Is parking a problem for the van at my house?
Rarely. Most Long Ditton homes have a drive or room on the road, so the van sits close and the kit comes straight in. Where commuter parking fills a street near Thames Ditton or Surbiton station, we bring a long hose and work from wherever we can stop. Tell us your road when you book and we sort the access first.
Can you clean a carpet for the end of a tenancy?
Yes, and it is regular work near the stations where rented homes turn over. We clean the carpets and stairs through, lift the marks a check-out clerk looks for, and give you a dated receipt for the inventory. Book a day or two before the hand-back so everything is dry well before the check-out and the deposit case is simple.
How long will my carpet take to dry in a Long Ditton family house?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract the water back out of the pile. A long-laid wool carpet is cleaned with less moisture so it dries without shrinking, and a mattress or sofa is usually back in use the same day. Open a window or put the heating on low and the room is normal by evening.
Can you get clay mud out of a cream carpet?
Usually, if it has been left to dry first. Wet clay smears, so we ask you not to rub it; once it is dry we vacuum the loose soil out, pre-treat what is left and rinse it with hot-water extraction. Fresh marks from one muddy walk come out well. A path walked in every day for a winter can leave a faint shadow on cream wool, and we will show you on a test patch before doing the room.
Our house was built in the 1990s with carpet everywhere upstairs. Is it any different to clean?
It is usually quicker. Most fitted carpets in houses of that age are synthetic, and synthetic fibre takes a hotter rinse without risk to the pile. In this census area 19.7% of homes were built between 1973 and 1999, so we do plenty. Four bedrooms, the landing and the stairs are normally finished in one visit, and dry 6 to 7 hours later.
Every clean in Long Ditton is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a spot comes back, so do we, at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across KT6 and the wider area since 2009.
