What Maida Hill homes are like
Maida Hill is the pocket of W9 west of Maida Vale and north of the Harrow Road, with the Avenues on one side and Kilburn Lane on the other. It sits on what was once Hill House fields, the highest ground in old Paddington at roughly 37 metres, which is why the name has “Hill” in it at all. The bones of the place are Victorian: long terraces of three storeys over a basement, laid out as St Peter’s Park from the 1860s, with the Italianate fronts on Walterton Road famously built without porches. Fernhead Road, Chippenham Road and Shirland Road run through the heart of it, and most of that grid has been a conservation area since 1986.
The other half of the story is the flats. After the war, stretches near the Harrow Road were cleared for council housing, and the Walterton estate changed hands more than once, so a lot of homes here are converted-terrace flats and purpose-built blocks more often than whole houses. For getting around, Westbourne Park on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines is the closest Underground stop, with Queen’s Park on the Bakerloo and the Overground an easy walk north. That mix, period upstairs and busy estate roads below, is what shapes the cleaning.
