Denham Way was laid in the 1950s to carry the A412 past Maple Cross, WD3, and the estate roads that branch off it, Maple Way and Pinchfield among them, are lined with the semis of a post-war council village. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned here since 2009, from £36 a room, and a cleaned room is back in use after 6 to 7 hours.

How a post-war village was built

Maple Cross grew up after the Second World War as a dormitory village. Around 800 council houses were built here, mostly two- and three-bedroom semis with their own front and back gardens, and many have since been bought into private ownership. Denham Way, the main road, came in the 1950s as an improvement on the Old Uxbridge Road, which still runs along the dry ground above the Colne floodplain on its way to West Hyde. The village has no church of its own and historically belonged to the parish of St Thomas in West Hyde. Junction 17 of the M25 is on the doorstep, and one spur of it is designated Maple Cross.

The other big neighbour arrived at the same time. Thames Water’s Maple Lodge sewage treatment works opened in 1950 down by the river, and today it serves more than half a million people across west Hertfordshire. Beside it is a 40-acre nature reserve of lakes and wetland, managed by the Maple Lodge Conservation Society, which was set up in 1983. With that wetland, the recreation ground on Denham Way and open fields all round, Maple Cross is a muddy place to walk a dog in winter. There is no station; Rickmansworth, about a twenty-minute walk away, has the Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways.

The village has stayed much the size it was. In February 2026 Three Rivers refused outline permission for up to 75 homes on farmland north of Chalfont Road, ruling that the site was in the Green Belt and poorly served by schools and public transport.

What do the census figures say about Maple Cross?

Maple Cross homes, counted in the census area Mill End, Heronsgate & Maple Cross (Three Rivers 009)
Homes that areShare
Houses of any kind79.1%
Three bedrooms45.9%
Owned, outright or with a mortgage61.6%
Rented from the council6.9%
Built 1973 to 199925.9%
Built 2000 or later5.4%

The census puts Maple Cross in one area with Mill End, Heronsgate and West Hyde, and the two estates dominate it. Houses make up 79.1% of homes, and three-bedroom homes alone are 45.9%, which is the Maple Cross semi in a single figure. The usual job in one of these houses, three bedrooms with the through-lounge and a single staircase, adds up to £210.

Ownership tells the right-to-buy story. Six in ten homes (61.6%) are now owned, and only 6.9% are still rented from the council itself; the rest of the social housing is let by housing associations. Owner-occupiers tend to refit as they go, so in a single road we can meet a twenty-year-old polypropylene next door to a new wool-mix twist. Later building is thinner: 25.9% of homes date from 1973 to 1999, and just 5.4% from 2000 on. Central heating is almost universal (just 0.9% of homes go without), so winter drying is no trouble.

Drives, Denham Way and wet clay

Parking is easy here. Three Rivers has no permit zone in Maple Cross (the nearest are in Rickmansworth), most of the post-war houses have a driveway or off-street space, and the estate roads off Denham Way, like Maple Way and Franklins, are simple to pull up on. Denham Way itself is the main road through, so we never unload on it; we use the estate road behind. The council noted surface water pooling on Chalfont Road when it looked at the refused scheme, so in heavy rain we keep the hose run off the wettest stretches.

Clear the shoes and the dog bed out of the hall before we come; that is usually where we start, and where the hose runs to the stairs. If you have a conservatory or a back room on a solid floor, tell us; carpet laid straight onto concrete dries a little slower.

Family life and field mud

These houses get lived in hard. The carpets we lift here are mostly mid-range polypropylene and wool-mix from the past decade or two, the sort that holds traffic lanes on the stairs and a dulled path from the back door through the kitchen. Two things drive most of our Maple Cross jobs. The first is family life: trodden-in food and drink rings, and the scuffed bottom step on a stair runner where everyone turns the corner. The second is the ground underfoot. With the Maple Lodge wetland and open Hertfordshire fields close by, damp clay mud comes in on boots and paws through the colder months and greys a hall carpet faster than anything else. Pet households are common out here too, and we lift dog smell and accident marks regularly.

Hot-water extraction removes the dirt and the odour that sits in the fibre. If a pet accident has soaked through into the underlay and the floorboards, though, the carpet will come up clean while a faint smell can linger from below. If we think that is the case, we say so at the door.

Carpets, settees and rugs in Maple Cross

Most Maple Cross bookings are our hot-water carpet cleaning, which lifts ground-in soil from stairs and living rooms and leaves them dry within 6 to 7 hours. We also clean settees and footstools with upholstery cleaning matched to the fabric, the right call for years of telly-dinner marks and a greasy patch on a sofa arm. Loose rugs get rug cleaning in the house, shampooed and rinsed on the spot. The same vans cover Rickmansworth and Mill End next door, and over the London boundary we offer Hillingdon carpet cleaning as well.

Asked in Maple Cross

Do you cover all of Maple Cross and the WD3 estate roads?

Yes. We cover the whole of Maple Cross across the WD3 postcode, from Denham Way and the Old Uxbridge Road through to Maple Way, Hazelwood Road, Wynnstay Gardens and the closes off them. We also reach neighbouring Mill End and Rickmansworth, so a single visit can take in more than one address if family nearby want their carpets done too.

Is parking a problem for the van on the Maple Cross estate roads?

No. Maple Cross has no controlled parking zone, most of the post-war houses have their own driveway or off-street space, and the estate roads off Denham Way are easy to pull up on. We carry long hoses, so even parked a little way down the road, or with you in a flat, we reach your carpets.

Can you get pet smells out of carpets and mattresses?

In most cases yes. Where a dog or cat has marked a carpet or a mattress, our hot-water extraction with an odour treatment removes the staining and the smell held in the fibre, which is the usual cause. The exception is an accident that has gone right through to the underlay or the mattress core; then we tell you plainly what cleaning alone will and will not shift.

How long do carpets take to dry in a Maple Cross semi?

Most carpets in Maple Cross are dry within 6 to 7 hours. Our machines pull out the bulk of the moisture as we go, so the floor is never left soaked. Dense wool or a thick stair runner in one of the post-war semis can take a little longer, and we leave simple airflow advice so the room is back in use that day.

Can you move the furniture for us?

Yes. We move sofas, armchairs, tables and beds out of the way and put them back on protective pads so nothing sits on the damp pile. Clear small things off surfaces and the floor before we arrive. Very heavy pieces, a full wardrobe or a piano, we clean around, so empty a wardrobe first if you want the carpet under it done.

Is winter a bad time to book a clean here?

No. With the heating on, a carpet dries just as fast in January, and 79.8% of homes in this census area run on mains gas central heating. Winter is when the field and wetland mud does its damage, so a clean in February or March, once the worst of it is over, gets the most out of it. Book before Christmas if you want the house fresh for visitors.

If a mark we treated comes back, the re-clean guarantee means we return and deal with it at no charge. Every cleaner is DBS-checked, the business is fully insured, and Maple Cross and the WD3 villages have been on our books since 2009.

Lounge and hall carpets cleaned. The kids had a party and there was squashed birthday cake and juice trodden in everywhere. Completely gone. Two polite lads, careful with the furniture, dry by the evening.

Three seater settee and a footstool cleaned. Years of telly dinners and a grease mark on the arm, all sorted. He took his time and it looks years younger. No damp smell either. Very pleased.

Stair runner cleaned where everyone scuffs the same spot at the bottom. Looks even all the way down now. Shoe covers on, no mess, in and out without a fuss. Good value and friendly.

Mattress cleaned after a pet accident. The smell has gone and it looks fine. They came at the end of the slot so it was later than I'd hoped and I'd waited in. Work was good though and fairly priced.
