What Maze Hill homes are like
Maze Hill runs down the eastern edge of Greenwich Park, and the road takes its name from a family who held land here in the 1680s. The housing splits into two kinds. Along the western side, facing the park, are Georgian and early-Victorian townhouses, some of them Grade II listed, including the terrace on Park Vista that was built in 1791. Behind them, toward the Westcombe Park Conservation Area that was designated in 2002, the streets fill out with tall Victorian terraces, many now divided into two or three flats, plus a scatter of purpose-built blocks. Vanbrugh Castle, the fortress-style house the architect Sir John Vanbrugh built and lived in from 1719, still looks over the park from Maze Hill itself.
Maze Hill station sits on Tom Smith Close at the park’s north-east corner, on the Greenwich Line, with Southeastern trains to London Bridge in about eleven minutes and on to Cannon Street and Charing Cross. The Prime Meridian is the odd one here: the zero line of longitude leaves the Royal Observatory, crosses the park and runs down Park Vista as a row of small brass studs set into the road, with a wall plaque just outside the gate. Most houses in the older streets keep wool carpet on the stairs, and every one of them backs onto a park that turns to mud from October through March.

Thick wool on a shaded landing, or a room with little airflow, can stay a touch damp into the evening and be perfectly dry by morning. Opening a window and running the heating for an hour speeds it along.
