Under Merantun Way, in an enclosure where they can still be viewed, lie the excavated remains of the chapter house of Merton Priory, founded in 1114 and pulled down in 1540. Around it, Merton Abbey, SW19, is mostly Victorian terraces, with the new flats of the High Path rebuild next door. London Carpet Cleaning has worked here since 2009; cleaning costs from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From priory to print works to terraces
Merton Abbey takes its name from the Augustinian priory that stood beside the River Wandle for over four hundred years. After the priory was demolished, its site turned to industry: a calico printing works opened there in 1724 and another in 1752, and in 1881 William Morris took over a large part of it to dye and print cloth. Liberty printed silk at Merton Abbey until 1972, and the colourhouse there is listed Grade II and still standing. When the Savacentre hypermarket and Merantun Way were built in the late 1980s, archaeologists dug the priory site first, and the road now runs right across the middle of it.
Homes followed the mills. The side streets between Merton High Street and the river are lined with Victorian terraces, many split into flats, and older flats and maisonettes sit on roads like Watermill Way and Byegrove Road. Conversions stand near the historic Merton Abbey Mills, now a market, and the Wandle Trail and Morden Hall Park are on the doorstep, which matters more than it sounds for carpets.
The biggest change is next door at High Path. Clarion is replacing the estate’s 608 homes in phases. The first 134, built by Hill, went to existing Clarion residents and leaseholders, and the outline consent granted in 2023 allows for up to 2,272 homes across the whole site. Those flats come with pale carpet throughout. South Wimbledon and Colliers Wood stations on the Northern line are both about a ten-minute walk, and the Phipps Bridge tram stop is closer still for the western edge.
The census picture for Merton Abbey
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 45.1% |
| Built before 1900 | 47.2% |
| Flats in converted houses | 15.7% |
| Rented privately | 33.1% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 14.0% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 15.7% |
The census area is named after South Wimbledon, and its numbers belong to the Victorians. Nearly half of all homes (47.2%) were built before 1900, and terraced houses make up 45.1%, the highest share of any home type here. Another 15.7% are flats in converted houses, so the terrace is the building block either way: a whole house with a staircase, or a flat on one floor of it.
A third of households (33.1%) rent privately and 14.0% rent from the council or a housing association, which is where the end-of-tenancy work comes from. The later building is modest; 15.7% of homes date from 1973 to 1999. Most jobs, then, are terraced houses with a stair carpet, and for a three-bedroom terrace with its front room and the flight, the clean comes to £192. Only 1.5% of homes have no central heating, so the radiators on low help a carpet dry, even in the ground-floor flats near the river.

Parking and access by the river
Merton Abbey sits between two sets of Merton zones. The main South Wimbledon zones run Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, while S3 is weekdays only, and to the east the main Colliers Wood zone, CW, runs Monday to Friday. Spaces fill fast near the tube and around the new High Path blocks, so tell us the block and the access when you book. Our van carries everything we need, and we can run a long hose from the nearest bay.
Merantun Way is a main through road, so for a flat that fronts it we use the nearest side street. In the riverside conversions, check whether there is a lift and where the bins and bikes live, because a cluttered shared hall slows everything down. If your terrace has a narrow hall, take the coats and shoes off the bottom stairs and we can start straight away.
Pale new carpet and riverside damp
The job pattern splits two ways. In the new-build flats it is light, pale carpet that shows every footprint and tea ring within a year, especially the traffic lane from the front door inward. In the older flats and the riverside conversions it is ground-in grit by the entrance and the dampness you would expect this close to the Wandle. We lift the dirt and speed the drying with strong extraction, so a living room is dry within 6 to 7 hours and not left wet overnight.
If a pale new-build carpet has had a dark spill left to set for weeks, or sun-fading along a balcony door, cleaning brings the fibre back to clean but will not undo a permanent dye stain or restore bleached colour. We will tell you on arrival what is dirt and what is damage.

Deep cleaning by the Wandle
Most of our Merton Abbey work is hot-water extraction, the deep steam carpet cleaning that flushes grit out of the pile and does more than wet the top. We also clean sofas and armchairs in the home through our upholstery cleaning service, handy in flats where the fabric three-piece soaks up everyday wear. For wool or anything delicate we do our rug cleaning in the flat or house itself across SW19, and a photo first helps for anything delicate. If you are elsewhere in the borough, from South Wimbledon up to Colliers Wood, see our carpet cleaning across Merton page, and we also reach nearby Norbury and Pollards Hill.
Questions from Merton Abbey
Which Merton Abbey streets do you cover, from High Path to the Wandle?
We cover the whole SW19 side of Merton Abbey, including Watermill Way, Merantun Way, High Path, Byegrove Road, Christchurch Road and Station Road, plus the flats around the mills and Merton High Street. The same team carries on into South Wimbledon and the rest of Merton, so a single visit can take in more than one address.
Can you park at the new High Path flats?
It can be tight. South Wimbledon sits in controlled parking zones that run Monday to Saturday, and spaces near the new blocks fill fast. Tell us the block and the access on booking. Our van carries everything from the kerb, and we bring enough hose to reach an upper floor from the nearest legal bay.
Do you do end-of-tenancy carpet cleaning for the rented flats?
Yes, and it is one of our most common Merton Abbey jobs given how many flats here are let. We give the carpets a full extraction clean to agency standard, working hardest on the doorway traffic lanes that letting inventories always flag, and we fit around your check-out date. If anything resists, the re-clean guarantee covers a second visit at no charge.
How long do carpets take to dry near the Wandle?
Expect 6 to 7 hours for most carpets, so a morning clean is fully dry by the evening. Ground-floor and riverside flats near the Wandle can hold a little more moisture, so we use stronger extraction passes there and suggest cracking a window or running a fan. We never leave a carpet soaking, which is the usual cause of slow drying and any musty smell afterwards.
I rent from a housing association. Can I book you myself?
Yes. A housing association tenant can book us like anyone else, for a move-out clean or simply because the carpet needs it, and we invoice you directly at the fixed price. If your landlord or a moving scheme is paying instead, tell us when you book and we will address the receipt to them.
Our dog comes home from the Wandle Trail filthy. Can you clean the sofa?
Yes. We vacuum the hair and dried mud out of the fabric first, then pre-treat the arms and seat cushions where the dog lies before a hot extraction clean. We check the maker’s cleaning code before anything wet touches the fabric. A two-seater sofa is from £57, and it can be done on the same visit as the carpets.
Our re-clean guarantee is part of every clean: if a treated area is not right, we come back and put it right at no cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Merton Abbey and the rest of south-west London since 2009.
